Sherlock Holmes is an interesting movie in many ways. Robert Downey Jr. portrays Holmes brilliantly, and carries and portrays the character very well. Jude Law plays Watson, and he did an excellent job of portraying the more down to earth persona of Watson. The rest of the acting in the movie is pretty unmentionable, but luckily the two that you see most of the time did a great job. The interaction between Holmes and Watson is appropriately humorous, but don't expect laugh out loud moments like The Hangover.
Sherlock Holmes makes use of flashbacks and flash-forwards with narrative to portray how Holmes figures things out. The story is carried very well and keeps you thinking the entire time. Now, don't get me wrong, I know that is the point of the Sherlock Holmes books and this movie, but it detracts from the entertainment value if you are constantly trying to figure things out, but at the same time I really enjoyed that aspect of the movie. The story keeps you guessing and throws in twist after twist, yet it is written well enough to that it isn't overbearing or confusing.
The movie follows the formula laid out in the books, to an extent. Obviously it is difficult to transfer an entire novel into a 100 minute movie, but I felt the story writer and director did an excellent job of it. Sherlock Holmes is appropriately entertaining, but if you are the type that likes to turn off your brain and just enjoy a movie, this isn't the one for you.
When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.
thanks for the review. i gotta catch this film for sure.
I really liked it. It was both entertaining, and still kept Sherlock's well-known intelligence intact.
And Robert Downey Jr. Is Awesome (No s*** Sherlock!)
Great film... I loved the soundtrack in particular and the sequences where he analyzes what is about to happen and then executes. ex. the fight in the pit.
The only complaint I had was the deviation of the time line. In the novels, when Holmes met Watson, Moriarty was already his arch-rival. Other than that the movie was excellent and I can't wait for future installments. I especially liked how they did the his internal monologues while he was deciding how he would do certain things, i.e. in the fights and such.
If you bred HK-47, Shale, Chai Ka and Wrex, the gaming world would explode from sheer badassery.
Yeah, the parts where he did his internal monologue was pretty cool. I like how he analyzed everything, and explained most of it to us. It seemed to me that Watson was a bit too witty occasionally, and Downey as Holmes was a little bit too weird sometimes. But other than that, I thought it was great. Definitely a movie I would watch again.
Sherlock Holmes was a great movie, probably would've been talked about more if Avatar hadn't come out around the same time. I hope they make a sequel.
