    Marvel Announces Secret Avengers

There's a new team in town... and we know nothing about it!

    LATEST IMAGES

February 8, 2010 - No doubt you saw the teasers we showcased last week. Marvel announced that Brian Bendis and John Romita Jr. would relaunch the classic Avengers series, and confirmed five members of the roster - Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Woman and Hawkeye. (For the record, Brian Bendis mentioned on Twitter that this is not the complete roster.) Today Marvel has moved to a different, more unexpected roster... the Secret Avengers.

Marvel announced the creative team alongside the series name. Ed Brubaker will be writing and Mike Deodato Jr. will helm artistic duties. Could this be a spiritual successor to Dark Avengers? It's hard to say, as Marvel offered no other details outside of a May 2010 launch window. Even the roster "reveal" is blacked out. You can see the image below. At first glance we want to say it's Venom, but that almost seems too obvious.

If last week is any indication, expect more of these. We'll update this article as more teasers are released.

  • I'm going to hope for Toxin. Any of you who don't know who Toxin is. Leave. Now. No, seriously.

All kidding aside, the Spider-Man-esque pose and larger physique points towards Venom, although the stature of the character isn't quite large enough for Mac Gargan's Venom. I'm going to go ahead and pray it's Toxin, as a new stint with lesser-known characters would be AWESOME. Hell, Marvel promised new characters and better heroes, so maybe they are considering Toxin to be a "new" character, as he isn't a very well known character from the late '90s. I want Carnage's son ***!!

Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: "With great power comes great responsibility." This is my gift, my curse. Who am I? I'm Spider-Man.

Here's another "Secret Avenger" teaser by the way.

I think it looks like Taskmaster. I think Taskmaster is a pretty neat character, and it would be cool to see him get more attention.

Or, it could be The Hood, as he is a new character and it looks kind of like him.... maybe?

My highest hopes, however, are that this is a Goblin character. Return of the Hobgoblin, maybe? Possibly?

  • I have never really heard of Toxin.. What are his powers?

  • Just as Carnage is the 'son' of Venom, Toxin is the 'son' of Carnage. Toxin is Patrick Mulligan, a NYC Police Officer that had Carnage's 'son' implanted onto him. Carnage feared his 'son', thinking that it would either be insane, as it was the 1,000th symbiote in the blood line, or would be too powerful and kill Carnage. He tried to kill the spawn before it was 'born', but failed, so he chose a random person with no powers to implant the symbiote upon.

Mulligan bonded with the symbiote, and they argued over who had control and what to use their new found power for. Seeing as Toxin was a new symbiote, he didn't know what he could and could not do in the restrictions of the law, and Mulligan, being a police officer, wanted to use his new powers for good.

They struggled over power for a little bit, but eventually came to an understanding about who is in control. The final decision turned into Mulligan controlling what they do, but the symbiote controlling the movement in combat.

Toxin had a short lived career, as he showed up in 2004 and only had a 4-issue series of his own. He later than reappeared during the Civil War as a potential candidate for the Fifty State Initiative, but was never confirmed as a registered hero.

As for powers, he has the same powers as Venom and Carnage, the only difference being a slightly stronger resistance to sound and heat. Also, Toxin can track ANYONE, not just another symbiote presence.

Obviously I know a LOT about the symbiotes. It's borderline obsessive. I have read EVERY issue of comics that involve a symbiote character, and own them all as well. Te symbiotes are my favorite characters, with Venom being the best of all.

Here's what Toxin looks like, by the way.

Here's another Secret Avenger by the way.

I think it looks like Vision, and I can only hope, but a lot of people are saying it could be Captain Britain, as Marvel has announced that Britain will make a return (http://www.comicvine.com/news/capn-britn-is-back-again/140383/). The pose even looks similar.

Brace yourself, by the way, I have 3 more of these to throw up here.

    Scarlet Witch. Nuff Said.

She is the most logical character, judging by the quote. She is now in control of her life and her powers after M-Day. Seriously. It would be awesome.
