Edit 2: Apologies for not updating this sooner. I did beat the game a while ago and clocked in over 100 hours. I completed a majority of the side quests, as well as acquired most of the rare blades (I got KOS-MOS!). This is easily my favorite JRPG of all time. The story merely gets better the longer you play and constantly surprises, while the combat never gets repetitive or boring. This game was an honor and a privilege to play. I'm now looking forward to the expansion pass content.

For anybody that was on the fence about this game, you should definitely pick it up. The game is being undervalued by the gaming press for reasons I don't understand. Virtually everybody that has played it, that I've talked to, has given the game glowing reviews. I honestly couldn't have asked for anything more from Monolith Soft. I'm just excited to see what comes next from them!

Edit: I'm over 50 hours into the game now and I'm likely 60% done. It's a HUGE game! As I stated previously, it is getting better with time. The plot continues to thicken. The characters keep throwing in more plot twists that weren't expected. There's always something new and interesting that keeps me coming back for more, not to mention the large variety of beautiful environments.

This is a very long game. I've done most of the quests I've come across, and there's still plenty to be done. I've only unlocked a handful of rare blades, largely because they are somewhat challenging to acquire. My goal is to get KOS-MOS, but that will be all up to RNG. You should definitely pick up this game if you want an amazing RPG experience to compliment your Switch outside of BOTW. You won't be disappointed.

*This review is based on the first 20 hours of gameplay and story. It will be revised on a regular basis, but will give a general overview and impressions.*

Xenoblade Chronicles 2, without a doubt, is the best JRPG this year. It is a game filled with ambition, wonder, beauty, and characters you want to care for. From the in-depth and gratifying gameplay, to the incredible vistas and exploration, to the engrossing story and likable characters, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 delivers on the promise of an experience you won't soon forget.

While I initially found the English VO (optional free Japanese VO pack on the Nintendo eShop), particularly with Rex, to be jarring, it quickly grew on me as I became more familiar with the character and his motivations. Everybody else is spot on in terms of their voice delivery and performance, although lip syncing was clearly not a priority.

Cutscenes are professionally crafted and the combat has so many folds and dimensions you'll be learning how best to use your blades and teammates tens of hours into the experience. Combat is all about positioning, timing, and combining the right elemental blades together for the most damage against a particular opponent. You'll be hard pressed to find many other JRPGs that offer this level of depth and strategy.

Quest design is very basic and generic by JRPG standards. However, it forces you to explore what is easily one of the most beautiful worlds ever crafted to date. You find yourself just enjoying the adventure and not being all that bothered by the fact you need a certain amount of items in order to meet the quest's requirements.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has absolutely shattered any expectations I had for this game. It is so much more than I could have imagined, and the critic reviews do not do this amazing experience justice. If you have a Switch, do yourself a favor and buy this game. You will not regret it, and it should be able to hold you over until Nintendo releases the story DLC for BOTW at the end of the year.
