Gamers can kick off the new year by jumping into the new turn-based strategy MMO brought to you by Square Enix and French studio Ankama Games.

Wakfu is the follow-up to Dofus, a Flash-based MMO that has garnered 25 million registered users since Ankama released it in 2004. Come January 4, you can check out their ambitious new project that features an anime art style and tile-based, turn-based battles, and Bastion-style floating worlds. Don't let the cutesy art fool you – this involving game features tactical combat, a complex item crafting, a mining-based economy, and even a governmental system. Take a look at the gameplay in action below.

Wakfu is currently scheduled to release in 2012. Much of the content will be free to play, but items will be available via micro transaction, and a $6 monthly fee allows you to access "premium content."
