Trion Worlds' Answer To Minecraft

Trion Worlds is best known for its MMOs Defiance and Rift, but the studio has just announced a new project that may appeal to fans of the visual style seen in Minecraft. Trove is described as a “free-to-play online adventure RPG,” and presents a dynamically generated game world mixed with handcrafted environments and levels.

Players are meant to play a game in a given generated world for a time, and then move on and play in a new version of the world that might be very different.  Trove encourages construction, exploration, and destructible environments.

The developers of Trove hope to distinguish their new project from Minecraft both because it is free-to-play, but also because they want to have a deeper involvement from their community in the development of the game and its structure. Alpha sign-ups are available now at the game's official site

Take a look at the new trailer, and share your thoughts in the comments. What do you think of Trove? Any interest in participating in the alpha?

  • I think this is the first time I've seen a non indie game studio trying to take a bite out of the Minecraft money cake. Usually it's just indie devs looking to make money quick with knock offs.
  • Wait a cotton picking minute... THIS IS CUBE WORLD!!!! Ahem, seriously though, this looks exactly like Cubeworld, right down to the terrain generation - the only difference is that you can build stuff in the world.
  • This looks WAY too similar to Minecraft. How can they claim community involvement in development sets them apart? Minecraft does that already. Horses were created by a modder before they were officially part of the game.
  • This looks like Minecraft with all textures taken out and replaced with solid colors and maybe a slight gradient. The character models are atrocious. It seems like a blatant rip off of Minecraft, only instead of delivering free content, they'll have an item store -- which I detest.
  • I like Minecraft, but I gotta say the combat and the enemy characters look pretty good in this one. I don't know if I'll ever play this game, but I hope Minecraft does something to enchance combat and enemies. new kinds of physics would be nice. Heck, Why not just make a Minecraft 2 and make everything better?
  • If this anymore like Cube World.... wait it is exactly like Cube World except you can build stuff. Even the enemies are the same. Shame on Trion Worlds.

  • Looks like a more polished version of Cube World to me,who knows, maybe it will have a better combat system.

  • It looks like HD Minecraft. That is the first thing that popped into my head.

  • Yay its almost like Minecraft!!!

    at least its free though

  • " Ideas can come from anywhere"

    So you copied Minecraft….

  • Looks like My Hero from the Master System days.  Maybe a little Two Crude Dudes thrown in for good measure.

  • HD minecraft anyone?
