Kalypso Media Releases The First Teaser Trailer For Tropico 5

More than 12 years after the release of the original Tropico, publisher Kalypso Media has announced that Tropico 5 is officially slated for some time next year. The newest entry to the long-running city-building series will release for Xbox 360, PC, Mac, and Linux.

Kalypso stated that players will resume the role of El Presidente in Tropico 5, the absolute ruler of the island of Tropico from the last four games. It will be El Presidente’s job, once again, to balance the ever-changing needs of the populace and his governmental bodies as Tropico moves from early colonial times all the way through the 21st century.

For the first time in the history of the series, Tropico 5 will offer competitive and cooperative multiplayer for up to four players. Multiplayer game types will allow players to either face off against each other or share resources.

We don’t have a more specific release date than 2014 as of now, but we do have a first teaser trailer, featuring El Presidente himself, below. The trailer seems to pay homage to Charlie Chaplin’s globe scene from The Great Dictator. Modern Times, an expansion for Tropico 4, is also the name of a 1936 Charlie Chaplin film.

Comments
  • I could never get into Tropico. Too much politics, heh.
  • OH MY GOD YES!!! the Tropico series is the best building-based games!! suck it, Sim City! El Presidente is back!! i hope GI covers this well

  • I liked 4. I might try this out.

  • I wasn't a fan of 4. The narrator sounded too cheesy, the music was fun but distracting after a few hours, the control scheme is a little too different than what I'm used to in other similar games, and the UI felt a little too cheap (shallow, I know). Basically, I like me a game like SimCity 4 where a narrator does not intrude on my gameplay and the music is fun yet subtle, sometimes absent. Hopefully 5 can improve on these things.
  • Not too surprising, but exciting nonetheless- the Tropico games are generally pretty good. 3 is still my favorite over 4 however...

  • So will we be able to conquer the world?

  • I believe they should make a German Nazi war game with Hitler on the cover. an RPG where you can control the fate of the SS..
  • I love Tropico!! Hope they expand it way more because that would be even more fun then just being on an island :)

  • BRIDGES!!!!!!!!

  • Linux!?!?!? Stop reading this and take my $$$ NOW!!!

  • I am absolutely stoked for this! I've logged well over 100 hours into Tropico 4.

  • They must be great Chaplin fans at Kalypso.
