Franchises like Medal of Honor and Call of Duty helped popularize the genre a few generations ago but gamers have since grown tired of the same scenarios. Sure, WW II was massive and took place in various parts of the world but we can only take part in those same battles only so many times until they begin to feel stale. What the genre needed was a fresh take, something that was less predictable, and that is exactly what Pandemic Studios has crafted here.

The Saboteur takes the open world approach and applies it to the familiar setting with glorious results. Players take the role of Sean Devlin, a former race car driver who has had his life ruined by the Nazi uprising. After losing a dear friend, Sean sets out on a vendetta to extract revenge on them. He is soon recruited by the French Resistance who aids him on this mission in return for some dirty work. I found the actual story to be overall pretty well done. Some of the characters are memorable and the voice acting is solid.

After joining the Resistance, Sean does a variety of different jobs for different factions to try and win them over for the cause. There is a nice variety in gameplay throughout. The driving and shooting mechanics are both solid. The gunplay is by no means as polished as something like Gears of War but it is adequate enough to get the job done.

Stealth is where I had a little bit of trouble though. The foundations are all there but I still found these segments to be the hardest. Sean can do things like disguise himself in Nazi uniforms to remain undetected within restricted areas but I was hardly ever able to keep my cover for long. This is because of all the restrictions you have while disguised. Things such as running, climbing, and getting too close to enemies all reduce the usefulness of your disguise and if you don't knock these activities off then you are recognized and an alarm is immediately sounded. Almost every single stealth venture I took part in resulted in an alarm, which then forced me to fight back or run away. I don't think the stealth is broken by any means, I just found some of the restrictions to be ridiculous and unforgiving and this was definitely the hardest part of the game for me. I also felt the melee combat was a bit under polished. Thankfully it's not necessary that often but it still could've used some improvement.

Stealth and melee aside, the gameplay is a blast. The entire city of France is at your disposal and this is where I found the the game's most redeeming factors. The detail put into the world is impressive and there are loads of things to keep you busy. From sabotaging German installations to discovering secrets hidden in every nook and cranny, there is so much to discover in this world. You aren't just confined to the city either. There are also vast stretches of countryside to explore and cause mayhem in, which I found to be quite refreshing after spending hours in the city. For the completionists and achievement hunters out there, this game will entertain for numerous hours, and it isn't tedious either.

Climbing is another large part of the gameplay and is handled quite well. The developers definitely took notes from Assassin's Creed but that isn't a bad thing by any means. It is fairly easy to scale and navigate buildings and the game actually does a better job of highlighting what parts of a wall you can and cannot grab onto than AC does.

The art style is also interesting. When you start the game the whole world is boringly black and white. As you start to help liberate the different areas of France they become painted in nice colors. One of my favorite moments was climbing to the top of the Eiffel Tower (which you can jump from and survive if you know how) and looking out across the beautiful environment. Most of the city was portrayed in striking colorful visuals, but I could also see the areas where I didn't spend as much time in and they were covered in shadow. The idea is pretty basic but I found it to be executed very well.

Much like in Grand Theft Auto, music accompanies you whenever you enter a vehicle. The songs fit the setting nicely and really help the immersion. It actually reminded me of Bioshock for some reason and I am pretty sure they are all real songs from real artists of the time.

The game's economy works like this. From completing story missions to blowing up Nazi toys, you receive contraband for everything you do, which acts as your currency. You can spend your hard earned contraband on things like weapons and upgrades. There is also a perk system. Perks are separated by gameplay styles. There are perks for driving, shooting, stealth, explosives, and melee combat to name a few. Fulfilling certain requirements unlocks better perks which improve your overall experience as one would come to expect from such a system.

Small gripes aside, The Saboteur is an immensely entertaining experience. There is enough to do for many hours and the amount of variety keeps things fresh. The story is solid but the true meat of the game lies in it's sandbox. Pandemic found a way to make fighting Nazis fun again and crafted an interesting world in which to do so. There are some annoyances along the way but it's never enough to ruin the fun. Causing Nazi grief and liberating the city of France is an experience I won't soon forget.

Wiki: The Saboteur Guides

Guides for The Saboteur

Wiki Page: Achievement List

I personally hate GTA. This game has a great story, good music, and did a great job of blending the various elements it draws from. It has a very interesting style with the black and white nazi oppression to the colorful liberated areas. But overall this is a solid game worth playing.

Blog Post: Not much to complain about

This game borrows gameplay mechanics from GTA4 and Assassin's Creed and blends them with a story set in WWII France. The graphics are good, the controls are solid but could use a few tweaks here and there, the story is your typical "You killed my (Insert loved one here) and I am gonna get you" revenge story but the gameplay is solid and keeps you entertained enough that the story being sub-par is of little concern. Also, the voice acting is fairly well scripted and performed and the game does not leave you wanting in the "Create mayhem for your enemies" section. You can destroy all sorts of Nazi fortifications within and around occupied Paris at your leisure and you are compensated financially for your efforts by the French Resistance. Overall I found this to be a rewarding experience and a breath of fresh air from your typical sandbox game that forces you down a narrow path to follow the story leaves little to do on your own. At any time you can go off on your own and create havoc amongst the German Garrison in the city instead of being kept on a strict story path. You can go back to the story after having destroyed most of the German fortifications in the city, which would actually make your enemy resistance much weaker, and make the later parts of the game much easier on you. Overall I can find little bad to say about this game and would say that if you like free-roam games and want something besides your typical repetitive shooter, then this would be a solid choice.

Blog Post: Saboteur

Pandemic tried to go out with a bang when they made The Saboteur. Does The Saboteur make a beautiful explosion or does the TNT blow up in its face?

Gameplay

The Saboteur is an open world game. The world is full of NPCs walking the streets and driving in cars even moving in and out of buildings. The NPCs have no real purpose other than to fill in space but the world feels alive with them in it.

The game handles alright but it feels lose during gunplay and stiff during driving. The gunplay is really easy and all the guns have a slight zoom on them which slows your movement but gives you higher accuracy. However it is more to your benefit to not use the zoom feature. The aim assist are so forgiving that it is easier to run and put the reticule close to a target and pull the trigger. On the flip side the driving is stiff. Turning corners or moving over a lane can be more trouble than they should be. Neither of this are unbearable problems but when games in the same genre like GTA and RDR don't have these problems it will be tough to sell your game.

The AI is pretty bad also. You can shot an enemy standing next to another enemy with s silenced pistol at point blank range and the guy you didn't shot won't turn on you. When you dress as a Nazi you hardly look like one but the Nazi don't notice. They will start to notice as you get closer to them but you figure if they see a dead body without a uniform anyone that doesn't look German would be shot.

Something nice are the perks you can get. For doing different deeds you unlock perks that get you new weapons, cars or different melee attacks among other things. The difficulty of these vary and some seem extremely hard and net you worthless stuff while others seem easy and net you get items. Poor choice on a few but in general it is a nice system.

Nazi occupied France, more about it in the Story section, is your domain. You can climb any building and steal any car you want. The city, Paris, is set up with all the monuments you know and love. The streets are small and narrow which gives to the time era, 1940s. The climbing works out fine but it seems a little out of place. You are just an Irishmen that races cars for a living but all the sudden you are jumping from windowsill to rooftops. Kind of strange.

As a saboteur you will be blowing up a lot of things...a lot of things. This isn't a bad thing until about half way through the game when most of your missions seem to revolve around blowing things up, rinse, repeat. The freeplay missions, non-story based, consist of blowing up Nazi towers, tanks, fueling stations and a slew of other things. This is fine because it nets you money but it gets old fairly fast.

The Saboteur handles itself fairly well but it needed tightened up in the gunplay department and the stiffness of the driving is annoying at times. The extra missions can get boring but they net you needed cash. It holds its own but it isn't a top tier open world game.

Gameplay: 7.0/10

Story

The story is actually pretty good. It is the story of revenge after you watch your best friend get killed. You go from racer to saboteur over night as the plot thickens.

The setting makes the game's story wonderful. It is in the middle of Nazi occupied France during World War 2. I know that the market is flooded with WW2 games but none of them are based solely on France and the resistance. As you complete the main quest the people of France gain hope and you can see it in how they move around and also the amount of Nazis on the street.

More atmosphere comes in with the color of the sections of Paris. When you first enter the city everything is in black and white with only select objects being colored, much like Schindler's List. However once you complete a story mission in an area it "lights up" gaining color. It really adds to the story.

The cast of characters is pretty good, the voicing is solid and the writing at times is downright funny in a good way. You will find yourself laughing out loud at some of the things the characters say back in fourth about each other and about the Nazis.

The plot does take some twist and turns and the end of the game is creepy in a "they finally understand what they are doing" kind of way. They story holds up fairly well and is a major positive in The Sabotuer.

Story: 8.25/10

Sound/Music

The sounds of the game are pretty weak overall. The cars all sound the same as do the weapons of the same class. Some of the pistols sound like rifles which shouldn't happen. Explosions sound nice but the buildings that fall after sometimes don't make any sound at all which makes no since. The alarm sirens do sound good as do the propaganda speakers but the speakers say the same things the whole game.

The music is a different story. The music sounds like it comes from the 40s when you are listening to it in your car. The opening theme gets the mood set right and really the music never stops being good. You will find yourself whistling the music once you turn the game off.

Sound/Music: 7.75/10

Graphics

The color style of black and white looks fantastic. If I had a choice I would have left the game in this color style. It gives a real air of hopelessness, depression and fear. Seeing only the lights in building and the red of the Nazi flags and armbands in color just made the game so much better.

Now once the game is colored in it isn't bad looking but it starts to look pretty average. Some of the cars look so identical you can't tell them apart. NPCs are lacking and sometimes you'll see the same looking NPCs walking next to each other. Building start blending together because most of them also look the same and there are no real landmark building to look at.

Graphics: 6.5/10

Replay

No multiplayer hurts games this gen and The Saboteur suffers that fate. There are plenty of freeplay missions to complete once you beat the game if you want to go around blowing up hundreds of towers and trucks. The game will last about 25 hours if you do some of the freeplay missions while doing the main quest but if you don't want to go back for tedious blow up quest that's all the longer you'll stay in Paris.

Replay: 6.5/10

Other

The Saboteur is a decent open world game that takes WW2 in a different light, working as a civilian instead of a normal grunt. However there are better titles out in this genre, namely RDR and GTA. Saboteur is a grade under those games, it is good and fun but it isn't an elite title.

Overall: 7.25/10

(My review is not an average of my numbers but what i feel the game as a whole should get. the numbers under each category are based on what I think those categories are in general when compared to most games on the market today.)

Blog Post: Distruction, chaos, revenge and a whole lot more-The Saboteur

The Saboteur game is great if you like an open free world game and enjoy shooting up nazi's and distroying almost any thing in your path. As always there is a twist although it seems a free open world to roam there are road blocks that you must watch out for and even with your pass to get through the nazi road blocks be sure to drive slow and stop. In Paris the nazi's are willing to shoot on a moments notice. Also on the other hand when you are playing missions and you drive into an area that has no color or is (in black and white), try distroying some nazi equitment for awhile. Well thats my opinion to help you make your opinion with my rating. For once, we have a WWII game that doesn't just involve "I'm in ur G3rmany, killin ur doodz". Striking visuals, a good-enough revenge plot and one heck of an awesome soundtrack elevate the otherwise only-decent gameplay. You play as Sean Devlin an Irish mechanic who is pushed out of his country life after is dear friend is brutally murdered by a nazi general. Your job in the game is to complete a series of missions across acts of the game's storyline. This is the only World War II game that actually has a story and that is what actually makes the game good. The sound in the game is very impressive, from the sound of bombs exploding on all sides. To the many different British, French, English, and Scottish accents. The graphics are good. Some of the cutscenes may look a little shaky but the real story parts have some very impressive visuals. The controls take a little getting used to especially the combat controls which is the only thing that stops this game from being the perfect WWII game. The Saboteur is a new take on WWII and anyone who would like a different perspective on WWII should give this one a try. The Saboteur is a 9.75 out of 10.

Blog Post: Operation: Liberate Paris

Ahhh... Paris, the City of Love: home to beautiful women, eye popping city sightings, cafés at every corner, and... Nazis? Pandemic Studios has turned this once beautiful city into a living, breathing nazi deathtrap waiting for overconfident Parisians to walk right into it. Word on the street is that these evil game developers have done this on purpose to entertain the increasing number of gamers nowadays. But these evil developers can't be all bad can they(?), bringing life back to the WWII genre which seemed to already be down a very long tunnel to be left for dead. That's right, Pandemic has created 'The Saboteur', a WWII game that doesn't have you battling your way up the beach on D-Day or spraying through the jungle to cut down crazy Japanese Banzais. It surprisingly turned out to be a huge success too, but why was it?

Sean Devlin, an Irish race car driver has experienced this brutal nazi invasion first hand, they killed his best friend, threatened to kill the people closest to him and left him nothing but a vengeance of pure hatred and a few tricks up his sleeves. The story basically starts to take off when a German officer scams a race from him and takes his glory. For kicks and a bit of vengeance, Sean and his friend trespasses into a Nazi HQ to destroy his prized car. Little to no surprise you get caught by this German which leads to a series of events that changes your character's life forever. That's basically the introduction to the story plot, after that you get into the action the whole way through to drive the nazi bastards of of Paris. Sean Devlin can jump buildings, gun down innocents and wreck havic, he's basically like the Ezio/Niko of World War II.

The city of Paris in this game is purely admirable in The Saboteur. France by itself is amazing, but the Developers do such more to it to make it so much more unique any other game. Generally speaking, Paris is made all in black and white to emphasize the depression the Germans has caused the citizens during the initial stage of the invasion. As you complete the story one mission after the other, pockets of color will open up all around the city to symbolize that there is hope in the inevitable time of destruction and chaos. It also represents the regions where 'The Resistance' and other civilians are influenced to fight back to gain back the city that has under siege.

In the end, 'The Resistance' is what gets you through the whole mess. They introduce you to the black market, which gives you a chance to buy weapons you've always dreamed of (MP 40s, Silenced pistols... that kind of stuff), and they also give you the choice to upgrade your character and your weapons, given that you have the money to do so. But ultimately they get you involved into the story line and give you missions that will help you along the way.

What really makes this game last long are the free play events that are scattered around the whole world. These free play events range from jumping off marked ramps with your car and braking boxes of Contraband (the money currency used) to blowing up Nazi watch towers and fuel depots. Depending on the difficulty or value of the event you finish decides how much Contraband you get to spend at the Black Market. For example: Blowing up a fuel depot will get you more moolah then if you broke open a box of contraband. It's not like there are barely any of these events around the city either, they are all over the place, to many to count even, which gives the title a life far greater than you would ever expect.

The only thing to bug this game about is really the players movements and the animations around the city. I'm not a big fan of driving in this game, since there are barely any crashing or damage physics and climbing is a real pain in this game, considering that you have to keep tapping 'A' to ascend farther up something.

Final Note: This game is the GTA IV of WWII. It has the same feeling with different atmosphere and a whole entire uniqueness. The way they color the city is great and the game has a bunch of replayability. The only thing to looked down upon is the way animations happen, such as the building climbing. To make this really short, buy this game, or at least rent it because it isn't something to laugh about.

Blog Post: Saboteur [Xbox 360]

[This poster has nothing to do with the game, just liked this poster. Thought it was cool.]

This game reminded me a bit like GTA, just when it comes to the gameplay, but all in all i actually really liked this game. It was addicting no lie. If you enjoy killing Nazi Germans, and exploding stuff up then you found your jackpot.

Obviosly this game takes place during WWII and in France. You play as an Irishmen by the name of Sean Devlin. Sean joins the French Resistance after having a drink with one of the members, Luc. As the game starts you start to know why Sean hates the Nazis (obvious reasons) as you play through a flashback. Then after the flashback that is initially when you start the game.

I personally like this game. Its addicting and i have to admit, a really neat feature in this game is that when a city isnt with the French Resistance the color is in black and white and obviosly once you inspire the town the color comes back to life. Funny part is im not sure which i like more.

In the game you have plenty of ways to get money to buy and upgrade weapons, cars, and special features. I would personally reccomend this game for any gamers who enjoyed playing GTA. In addition to to Nazi killing frenzis. But all in all the gameplay is very simply, the graphics were pretty legit but the story is simple and a bit cliche but it all comes together in the end of the game.

POWER to The PLAYERS.

Blog Post: Good=Bad

It was a good game just should have explained why he could climb building like Altiar or Ezio, but the perk system was cool it took all the good games pros but also some cons.

Blog Post: The Saboteur

2009 has been filled with many great sandbox games, can The Saboteur sneak into the top spot or should it be put to a firing squad?

The Saboteur is set during World War II (a setting not too unfamiliar to gamers) and sees you playing the role of an Irish mechanic who takes on missions for, and I shall say this only once, the French Resistance in Paris. Being a typical sandbox game, these missions will involve blowing things up, driving to this point or killing that guy. The usual thing that anyone familiar with GTA or the like will have seen before.

What the developer, Pandemic, has done to attempt to set The Saboteur apart from that series includes stealth, climbing and a higher focus on unarmed combat; you’ll still have plenty of firearms, so don’t worry about taking on the Third Reich with just a bunch of fives.

The problem with all the elements that make up this game is that they felt like they'd been lifted from games of the last year, but not implemented as well. The climbing feels like InFamous, but not as good. The stealth / suspicion meter is like Assassin’s Creed 2's notoriety meter, but not as good. The map with GPS-style waypoints is very GTA4, but once again not as good.

Trying to play stealthily is a chore, as you’ll be spotted even when you think you’re in cover, and then you can either continue the mission with guns blazing or try to turn the alarm off.

Luckily they have provided a few ways to do this: from running away (about three miles away), to finding a hiding spot without being seen (not too hard as the enemies can’t climb); and from physically turning the alarm off, to changing into an enemy costume without being seen (pretty difficult with half the SS hot on your heels).

You could try dressing up as the enemy before a mission and sneak around unnoticed, but the Germans have an uncanny ability to sniff out the Irish in you, so you’ll be running out of their range more often than not.

Another area of the game, which feels similar to Red Faction: Guerrilla, allows you to blow up enemy installations all around Paris, which gives you the game's currency: contraband. Its final similarity to Red Faction, although handled differently, is that when you complete certain missions you liberate part of the city, causing the colour to be restored and the French to help you more in your fight against the German occupation.

This colour restoration changes the look of the game considerably, as areas start off black and white (with a few splashes of red here and there when bullets start flying). It gives the game a unique visual style, though travelling at night in the non-liberated areas often results in lots of car-meets-tree incidents.

While the music was a highlight of the GTA series, it is poor in this game. We know that rock and pop from the 70s, 80s and 90s wouldn’t be in keeping, but a decent score wouldn’t have gone amiss. The voice acting is a mixed bag, with accents from all across Europe, and some occasional success.

The game also has a few glitches that made us thankful for the frequent auto-save, and some notable pop-up and terrible draw distance didn't help the experience of playing this game.

With so many other great open-world titles out this year (most of which this game imitates poorly) it’s hard to see The Saboteur's appeal. So long, Pandemic; sadly, after this final game, you won’t be missed.

Blog Post: Smart game !

This game is written very well .
