Looking For Horror? The Evil Within Won't Leave You Hanging

Shinji Mikami is considered the father of modern survival horror, giving us the Resident Evil and Dino Crisis series (and all their jump scares). Along with his new studio, Tango Gameworks, he's reminding us just how good he is.

In this extended gameplay demo of The Evil Within (published by Bethesda), you'll get a sense for the psychological and gruesome physical terror that will plague detective Sebastian Castellanos and the players controlling him.

The Evil Within is due out in 2014 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. For more, read our E3 preview and see the trailer from the Tokyo Game Show.

  • This game keeps looking more and more freaky. I love it

  • Mod
I watched this the other day and it's got me even more excited than before. Especially the second part that showed him wondering around the new area. The atmosphere looked amazing. A nice mix of RE, with a bit of SH thrown in for good measure.(kind of resembled the early versions of RE4 with the Hook man)

The part where he drops the enemies, and then burns the bodies with a match got me excited as well. A nice call back to REmake with the Crimson Heads.

This game has been on the top of my most wanted list since it was announced, and the new info that trickles out here and there only helps to solidify that.
  • Do you guys at GI know that your last Evil Within post (the trailer from TGS) never got put up on your site, I had to type it into your site to find it.
  • I like the RE4 vibe I got from the trailer.  The part where he is fighting them from coming into the windows looked like a good way to break up the gameplay.  I am pretty excited for this game.

  • Lots of suspense! Their always a chainsaw guy. Why?! I hate that guy! lol. Should be a very messed up freaky game. That girl/moster/thing at the end of video looks very familiar...
  • Looks pretty solid. Especially the lighting and mood. One thing that always amuses me about newer horror games is their reliance on character injury (the mangled foot/ankle) to create tension only to have said character running around again moments later as if it didn't happen. Not a big deal as it appears with the syringe and empty pill bottle (if I noticed correctly) that field doctoring yourself may be a gameplay hook. 2014 is shaping up to be a good year with some major next and current gen releases.
  • This game looks great!

  • Man this looks so good, I've been following this since GI first covered it. This is my go-to game for horror in 2014, I have no doubt it will live up to it's lofty expectations.

  • Am I the only one who didn't that that was at all scary?
  • I'm excited for this game but I hope they add something to make the character seem more real. Maybe some voice acting during gameplay similar to Naughty Dog titles. I know that after I nearly got chopped to pieces by some giant mutant with a chainsaw and them some crazy machine, I would probably say something along the lines of "holy ***!".That and maybe some better character animations. I hope they change how he runs like a goose, lol. I'm sure the game isn't finished and they will probably add some things like this but heres hoping i'm right. But even if they didn't. Game still looks great.
  • i like how i can probably walk as fast i he can run lol but looks intense and fun

  • One thing that stood out to me was that there was no on-screen radar telling you where to go. That's great for a game like this. It makes exploration necessary in a dreaded place.
  • Reminds me of RE4, but not complaining. I dont think Ill get used to that girl anytime soon though.

  • The more I see of this the more I look forward to it. I hope its not too familiar to Resident Evil 4 though, don't want it to be predictable.

  • please give this game oculus support

  • I want to like this game, but I just don't think it looks very good.

  • I know it's early, but here are some things I don't like: 1) Sebastian runs like Ace Ventura in the Mental Hospital scene. 2) There doesn't seem to be any incentive as to where you shoot enemies. We noticed shots to the legs didn't slow them down and shots to the head didn't seem to inflict any more than normal damage (minus the explosion). 3) This was just a short video, yet even it left an unnerving feeling. Wait... that's a good thing.
  • So... Dr. Salvadore returns with the townies and a new monster boss... It's pretty much Resident Evil 4-2 then?
  • Jump scares do not a horror game make. : ) I got so scared playing Diablo 1 when I was in 4th grade. The Halls of the Blind filled with Unseen will haunt my soul for eternity
  • so far, not digging it.  its definitely not showing any other modern survival horror game up, not even touching Dead Space 1 & 2.

Honestly the color schemes and pace just make me want to play REmake, which they should just re-release in HD on the account of it being insanely good
