The lights are on

Give it a little more credit, GI

I strongly believe that The Conduit deserves way more credit than GI gives it here. For real, you're going to compare the graphics of a Wii game to Modern Warfare? That's a low blow. You just can't do that!

With that out of the way, I'll get on with the review.

Concept

Basically, create a great hardcore Wii game. And High Voltage Software succeeds.

Graphics

The graphics are the best that I've seen on the Wii. I would say even better than Super Mario Galaxy, basically considered the most beautiful game on the Wii. However, because the game goes for a realistic look, there's not much style. It could use more art direction. But The Conduit's graphics are definitely amazing, and it does things I never though my little white box could. I would definitely like to see developers take advantage of what the Wii really can do now, as every game on it just looks a little worse knowing it could be so much better.

Controls

These controls are AMAZING. Do not believe what GI said. The controls are smooth, the Wii Remote is a way more accurate shooting device than any analog stick. At first I was totally fine with the default controls, but I just had one little snag, which I can't exactly remember. But you know what? It was okay, because even if you absolutely hate everything about the default scheme, its ALL customizable. So basically, don't like that the shoot button is B because you're used to the Metroid Prime default of A? Switch them around. All the buttons can have their functions changed. And it doesn't stop there. You can change the run speed, turn speed, remote sensitivity, bounding box, etc.

Gameplay

Just a bit too simple. The game entirely consists of running and shooting aliens. Well, not entirely. There are also points where you have to stop and find little biological nodes on the walls to unlock a door, and a couple puzzles to solve, but these don't add much variety to the game. The most interesting thing to break up the action with is searching for hidden secrets, but again, beside this, the entire game is running and shooting.

Multiplayer

Again, this is GREAT for the Wii. The gameplay modes are what you would find in any shooter, but they are very addictive nonetheless, and it provides a great Halo-esque experience. My personal favorite is ASE Football, where an in-game device called the ASE (All Seeing Eye) is dropped somewhere in the level, and you have to try to find it and hold on to it as long as you can to rack up points. Another good one is Bounty Hunter, in which you are assigned one person to kill, and killing any others gets you penalized. The levels provide some variety and are pretty well designed. Beware though: playing with friends will be tough, as you must still go through the swapping of friend codes.

In Conclusion

The Conduit is not earth shattering. There isn't a ton thats different about when put against all the FPS's out there. But change the background, make it a little more Wii flavored, and The Conduit shines like light at the end of a tunnel. In a sea of shovelware and party games, there is a good hardcore FPS. I would recommend it just for the controls alone, and to see what can really be done on Wii. But throw in a fun, if not amazing, single player campaign, and multiplayer that can stand up to even the likes of Halo all by itself, and you've got a title that should set an example for more titles to come, FPS or not.

Comments
  • the conduit is so underated. if i reviewed this game i would give 8 1/2

  • I got this game too and tried to write my 1st review. It said something about DUPLICATING POSTS which i have no idea what it is. I give it a 9.25 and it is one of my favorite wii games, and one of my favorite GAMES. period.

  • Totally one of the most underated on the Wii. Probably best shooter on wii. If i reviewed it i'd give it an 9.25.

  • Why does GI have to give this game more credit? They're allowed to have their own opinions, and these opinions obviously don't influence yours at all. Are you going to go hunt down every review you find for this game and if you don't agree with it, tell the author rewrite it until it matches with how you view the game? I highly doubt it.

What you should have done here is, instead of just bashing GI and then reviewing the game outright yourself, mix your review in with GI's review. Since you started off voicing displeasure with GI's review, it gave you a perfect opportunity to do a "review of a review": Break it up into sections like you did here, but quote what GI said about that particular aspect of the game and then contrast it with your own opinions.

With that framework, you will still be able to voice your displeasure with GI's review and still provide your own opinions on the game, but you also benefit from having a more professional feel to the whole thing. It will let the readers know what GI said in their review (keep in mind not everyone may have read it) so they can understand why you disagree with them.

  • I really don't get why everyone downs The Conduit.  It's such a great game.  It could have used a little more work, but altogether, it was really fun.

  • @antonymity:

im not telling the reviewer to rewrite his review. i understand that everybody has their own opinions, i simply disagree with the reviewers opinion. so instead of sitting around and letting one of my favorite games get bashed, i wrote a review. gameinformer gives me the power to write a review and therefore disagree with them if i so wish. and about your way to write the review, aren't you basically telling me i should rewrite my own review, which you previously accused me of doing. do i smell hypocrisy? just go write your own review, if you feel so strongly about this, ok?
