The Bureau: XCOM Declassified
When XCOM was shown at last year's E3, the main enemies appeared to be alien blobs of black fluid. Now, it appears that developer 2K Marin is focusing more on humanoid foes.
In the demo at 2K Games' E3 booth, I saw agent William Carter taking down aliens with actual arms and legs. They aren't your standard extraterrestrials, though; they appear to be made out of shifting geometric shapes, and some of them can even appear human.
Of course, there was more to see than new enemies. 2K was showing off more of the strategic and tactical aspects of the game (taking place at XCOM headquarters) to drive home the point that it isn't just another sci-fi shooter. Emphasizing its roots with the PC X-Com series, the team talked about how players can recruit team members, research alien technology, and take on side missions to bolster the strength of the XCOM organization.
Even though a lot seems to have changed since we last saw XCOM, it still looks like it needs some fine tuning in the gameplay department. The style looks cool, and the ability to upgrade your allies and their abilities is a welcome addition, but it won't matter much if the nuts-and-bolts can't stand up to the competition.
