Sometimes you can tell that a game has been rushed just by the lack of polish in the menus. I got that feeling with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. As soon as I launched the single player campaign, I had questions about what I was seeing. The screen goes black and you hear voices of the Turtles and it sounds like there is some action going on. Its as if there is a cut scene happening but you only hear it. Suddenly, you're forced into controlling April O'Neil for 3 minutes of the most pointless gameplay ever. The brief segment isn't much of a tutorial since April doesn't actually do anything other than walk-- and walking is a generous term for her character model's stiff gliding action. The first time through, April got stuck on a ledge she's supposed to climb over so I had to reset the game.

After a whole-lotta-nothin', you get to control the four Ninja Turtles and the combat takes a cue from the Arkham series and then Captain America-Winter Soldiers all over it. If you played that Captain America game, you know what can happen when a great counter system meets imprecise control and delayed button response. This is even worse. Once you start compensating for the button lag, it can become pretty easy to make due. So if you love making due, you will love this game.

There is an upgrade system that could potentially make the combat more enjoyable but the game is a mess. It isn't even the massive glitches that sink the game. Sure, it is frustrating to have to restart a mission because the enemies don't spawn correctly but the real problem is that the game feels like something you get in a cereal box or a Happy Meal. It isn't just rushed, its not even finished.

I'd review the rest of the game, but I had to stop playing it while I chastised myself with a belt a la Michael Shannon in Boardwalk Empire. How could I waste 15 bucks?
