Smash Bros. Director Masahiro Sakurai Details Newcomer Robin's Fighting Style

Robin, of Fire Emblem fame, attacks with a destructible sword a magical tome that changes powers.

Robin, alongside Lucina (who was also recently detailed), was revealed on Monday morning. Sakurai wrote on the Miiverse about Robin and his/her sword, "The Levin sword can be activated by using smash attacks – you can even activate these moves in midair! However, just like in the original game, the Levin sword can be used only a limited number of times before it breaks, at which point it takes some time to regenerate. When the Levin sword is unavailable, Robin fights using the bronze sword."

Sakurai also spoke specifically about Robin's tome writing, "The way Robin launches Arcfire is kind of crazy – he or she calls down a bolt of flame from above, then launches a pillar of fire! By the way, Robin’s tome changes with each special attack." You can see Robin throwing some fire with the tome at Captain Falcon in the image below.

  • He definitely seems like a tricky character to use if both his Levin Sword and tomes can break. It forces you to save your most powerful attacks for when you're in a tight spot. I gotta say, Robin's become my favorite newcomer up until this point in time. Was not expecting his inclusion, but I'm really glad he's in.
  • REEEEEED Robin! Yum!

    *Barfs.

  • Has all the blowhard hatred for FE died down yet? Or are there fanboys still seething that its Robin and not their beloved Shulk?
  • Interesting attack style I can't wait to see how he/she plays once this comes out October. Now if they can confirm Meta Knight I am completely sold.
  • I' actually very pleased with the inclusion of Robin and Lucina in SSB. Now, I'm a big FE fan anf it makes me very happy with this series getting some more love in SSB. Robin looks like a very interesting newcomer! And, as for Lucina, I don't think that she is an exact clone of Marth, there has to be some differences in order to give her her own slot as Sakurai said, and I have so much faith in him as a game director, and I'm not exactly MLG or really nitpicky or anything. As long as I get to play as some of my favorite characters I'll be really content!
  • Whats with all these animes :( I want more nintendo characters. Or at least characters from different gameesssss.
  • Oh man, I got the code! I can't believe nobody else found it. Destiny Beta, here we come!
  • I was kindda hoping the avatar would be involved, just didn't know if they would just wear the hood the whole time or what. Wonder if we'll be able to customize the appearance at all on the 3ds version

  • Yeah, I read about it. Robin seems very technical and tricky. I look forward to failing at mastering the character.

  • Oh I am so happy Falcon is back. Now just give me Ness and/or Lucas and I will be set.
  • Come on GI, I'm as excited for this game as anyone, but are we gonna get articles for every daily update? Could we at least pack them all up and get every update from the week on friday/saturday?
  • Robin has quickly become the character I'm most interested in playing. Somehow, he beat out MegaMan. So along with Link and Ness, I will add at least those two to my list of main fighters. I might actually give Ike and Samus a proper try this time as well.
  • Tomes breaking like in the Fire Emblem games are interesting, but because Robin's recovery move is a tome I can see him being weak when it comes to getting back on the stage. I wonder what Nintendo will do to balance that out. Maybe make his smash and air moves really good?

  • Come on Shulk!

  • Mmmm... Looks like he has a high learning curve, unlike his wife. Also, nice to see a FE character that uses more than swords. Even though I plan on maining Lucina.
  • Wait, can you change his/her tome to what you want or is it randomly picked when you fight or does it change everytime it breaks? I'm a thunder fan!

  • I don't know about everyone else but I'm hype for this guy

  • He/she looks pretty complicated. I think I'll have to reserve judgement for now, but at present I can't say I'll be using him/her in a competitive capacity. Casually, though, I'm thrilled he/she is being included. This roster has it's fair share of traditional fighers, but the amount of novel/unique fighers is pretty impressive.
  • Im looking forward to playing this game.
