Clear Your Trophy Cabinet For Super Smash Bros.

Trophy collecting has been a part of the Smash Bros. experience since Super Smash Bros. Melee hit the GameCube in 2001. They're in the upcoming Wii U and 3DS versions as well, according to a new update on the official Super Smash Bros. site.

Game director Masahiro Sakurai posted the above trophy, of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's Saria (and Navi), along with the following explanation:

Happy New Year!
Pic of the day. There will be trophies in the 3DS and Wii U games, and each version will boast different types and models. The 3DS trophies will be mainly from handhelds and the Wii U version will feature trophies from the home-console games.

So now we know that players will be snagging two flavors of trophies in the game – assist trophies, which fight alongside your character for a while, as well as these non-interactive display items. Who knows what kind of horrors people might discover through clever rotation?

  • Trophies were always my favorite part of Smash Bros. outside of the actual game, and I'm really glad that picking the 3DS version won't mean I have to sacrifice having them.

  • Awesome! I'm getting both versions! :)

  • I love getting trophies in Smash, so yay!! As for that video.... that is scary.

  • Nice, good idea that they are having different trophies for 3DS and Wii U. I love collecting the trophies in Smash, and now it gives me reason to buy both versions.

  • This is what made Super Smash Bros Melee more fun. The trophies kept people playing. I would play constantly, even after beating the game with everyone, just to collect more trophies and look at them. No matter if you finished classic mode with everyone, or played enough online, trophies will keep everyone entertained. I wonder what the new mini game will be in order to get trophies.
  • Trophies were the one thing me and my brothers didn't care for. All we cared about is when there was a new foe approaching.

  • Technically that isn't Navi. Every kokiri has his/her own fairy, so that would be Saria's fairy, not Link's...unless her fairy's name is also Navi, then you'd be right.
  • I hope they have the lottery/coins system for the trophies.

  • I'm still bummed out it won't have a story mode like Subspace Emissary. F*cking Nintendo. lol

  • I wonder if the 3DS trophies will feature tracker-less Augmented Reality? Might be one of those neat bonus/useless features, to be able to take pictures of the trophies against real-world backgrounds. Just sayin'. Would give looking at them more of a purpose than just spinning them around in a menu...

  • Man, that extra eye video on Daisy you linked there, Cork, freaks me out. As a character modeler, I can safely say, I have NO IDEA why that's there. So... y'know... it's freaking me out. It looks like it had to be done on purpose. At first I thought it was the camera clipping through the back of her head... nope. Then I thought maybe it was a repeating texture, and her eyes just... restarted again along the x axis (horizontally), but it was blocked by hair so who cares? Nope - the eye is DIFFERENT than her front eyes. It really is baffling.
  • Those photos weren't coming in for a long time after the Zelda announcement... It's nice to see them coming back! I need my SSB fix.

  • Yes, this segments my beliefs that the WiiU is coming home.

  • Cool, everytime I get a new trophy in SSBB I feel really happy :)

  • Is it just me, or are the Smash Bros updates getting less and less interesting?  Either they're building to reveal something big, or they're planning on creating customer disinterest to the point that when the games launch, no one will notice.

That, or they just don't care what they show.

  • Interesting. It helps give me something to shoot for.

  • Mod

I love getting trophies! I can't wait to play this game.
