At PAX East, I had the chance to play Image & Form’s follow-up to SteamWorld Dig. I was quite surprised that, despite a unified aesthetic, SteamWorld Heist plays quite differently.

SteamWorld Dig borrowed a page from Metroid’s book. Heist is more reminiscent of XCOM, but on a two-dimensional plane. In fact, some of the iconography is the same.

One of the things you might notice is that hats are important. If you happen to shoot one off an enemy robot, you can pick it up. The exact power of the hats has yet to be revealed, though.

You can read more about the title in our roundup of great indie games from PAX East. It’s due out this year for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Wii U, 3DS, Vita, PC, and mobile platforms.
