While the campaign was short, it really served the purpose of introducing gamers into the multiplayer mode, the brunt of the game. Multiplayer is fairly simple and user-friendly. Any self-respecting gamer with a little ingenuity (and a rocket launcher) can hold his own against the larger starhawks. The RTS makes for a great gimmick to set it apart from other games. My only wish is for a cover mechanic as that would be invaluble. Plus, how can you hate a space cowboy/ mercenary/ named Emmett.

Blog Post: Servers, Anyone?

I didn't want to do this, but...

I was never really a FPS type of gamer and I hated HATED 3rd person shooters. Uncharted and Gears of War, I could never get the hang of those and my friends KNOW this. Santa Monica threw a Beta for a game called Starhawk at me and I said screw it, because it felt like nothing was on the line. I fell in LOVE with the Beta, I felt like I took to it well and was able to play in multi-player without feeling utterly embarrassed. I became a fanboy and this Beta was responsible for getting me back into gaming. I had to wait a few weeks to actually pick up the game, due to finances, but it was a big to-do when I finally did buy it and all my friends knew how excited i was. I get home, install it, boot it, head straight to multi-player and BOOM I cannot connect to a server. After getting the same error message several consecutive times, I took the usual steps. I checked other online services to see if they were connecting and running properly, reset my modem, checked my network settings. Then I looked to the support forums and wikis. I found that the error message I was getting was little mentioned, but was said to be related to my ISP. I gave Charter a call and told them what was going on. They explained that all the ports on my modem were open and there were no restrictions that would interfere with me playing this game. It's been a week now and I haven't played the game yet. So I calld Sony Playstation customer support. They told me that it was an ISP problem and to call my ISP. I explained to them that I already had, but decided to play ball as they weren't giving me too many options. I called Charter again who had me reset my modem and a bunch of crap that took around 3 hours and fixed nothing. So I was pissed now and decided at this point that maybe it was the disc so I exchanged it and the same error message popped right up. I called Sony again and explained everything before telling them that I could stand to get a refund. They informed me that once a distributor purchases the game, they are responsible for any problems with it. They told me I could ask for a refund at the store where I bought it. Before going to Walmart for this little adventure, I made sure to inform the Sony rep of Walmarts return policy on open software which is no refunds only exhanges for the same title. I told them that this wasn't going to solve my problem and they told me to call back and put them on the phone with Walmart customer service when I got there and they'd try to help and they informed me that my issue was on file for when I called back. I got to Walmart and everything went as expected. The customer service rep denied my return. I explained the situation to her. She asked her manager (some rookie scrub lacking independent thought) who became visibly pissed at me!!! So now I'm being hated on for being the victim. And I still have this useless $50 coaster. I called Sony again and a young lady was kind enough to put a supervisor on the phone to tell me to screw off on behalf of Sony Corporate. After a few weeks of cooling down, and being optimistic and hoping everything fixed itself, I popped the disc in to see what would happen. Again, i got the same error message, but I decided to try to force it. After around 30mins, I was actually able to connect to a match! Happy day, I thought. After playing for a bit, I decided to come back later. When I came back later an old friend was there to greet me. Yep, you guessed it, Mr. Error Message. Over the course of a few days I discovered that I could get on after a few tries between 7am and 11am. Before and after that, no chance. I was, at the time paying for a 100Mbps connection so I was confident that network speed would not be an issue with anything for a while. I still don't know what the problem is with connecting to Starhawk servers. The Beta worked fine and there were lots of people on that! So I guess I can't really review the Starhawk multi-player because I haven't even gotten 2 hours in. But we all know the single player is just a tutorial for the multi-player so that's as sufficient a review as I can give.

Blog Post: Multiplayer Shines through in a diluted shooter market

NOTE:My review is based off the 1.4 update

Starhawk is a third person shooter game with RTS elements that define the game. As Gameinformer likes to say, every shooter has a "gimmick". Whether it be control of gravity or heavy parkour every shooter tries to do something different with the genre to mixed results. Lightbox Interactive went all out on their "gimmick" to the point where it is a necessary mechanic. This is the Build and Battle system allows you to drop down structures from space including jetbikes, bunkers, mechs, and turrets. The game is very vehicle based but with a jetpack and rocket launcher a smart player can take out anything. The gunplay is well done and movement is fairly loose, most likely to give infantry a fighting chance against Hawks(transforming jet/mechs) and makes gunfights longer and the kills are much more satisfying. Next is the campaign. The campaign is quite short and serves mainly as tutorial for the multiplayer. Enemy AI and ally AI are actually quite smart, especially on hard. Enemies will climb into your bunker, destroy turrets first, and will avoid snipers. There is also Co-op but it is hard. I am a skilled player and even playing with people who have hundreds of hours into the game have trouble winning. The gem of Starhawk is multiplayer. It si the best multiplayer game of the year, hands down. Max Payne may have better graphics, Call of Duty will sell more, Counter Strike is more hardcore, and Ghost Recon may have more weapons but there is just something special about Starhawk's multiplayer. Maybe its the Build and Battle, maybe its the transforming into a jet but its most likely the amount of itelengce it takes to master and appreciate the game. Getting a kill against another infantry soldier is hard but feels so satisfying, trying to outduel a hawk while yours is about to explode, defeating a take with grenades and a rocket launcher, dropping a wall on hawk. Thats what makes this game special.

Wiki: Starhawk Guides

Guides for Starhawk

Wiki Page: A Real Guide

To start, if you have Starhawk good job, this game is awesome. The campaign is pretty straight forward- always prepare and build a ton of auto turrets and walls before you start a new part of a defense mission, because then the actual fight is a breeze. Always use the newest building they have given you, the levels are designed to show off the capabilities of each building/vehicle. Pretty standard fare.

For the multiplayer, decide if your a hawk person or not. If you love hawks (the games Hawks, not real hawks), or like flying and quick attacks then focus intently on figuring out where the best Hawk weapons are placed for each map, and use them. You cannot succeed with a hawk if you do not use the right weapons in the right situations. Try to destroy tanks if possible with heavy bomb weapons, but usually you should not attack people alone because certain handheld weapons are very effective against hawks. You can attack lone people if they haven't seen you yet, you can land and stomp on them and be on your way. If the enemy has set up a ridiculous amount of Beam Turrets at close proximity then you may have to dismount your beloved hawk and try and attack the beam turrets some other way. Also, know that you cannot fly your hawk while you possess the flag- so you'll have to get out of your hawk with the flag unless you want to be killed. Finally, if you land in the midst of their base, destroy the Force Field asap.

If you don't think your a hawk person, and you like a persistent and paced attack, as well as tanks then your probably a tank person. Tank people are unlikely to ever actually get the flag- if it gets to the point where there are not many buildings or people left at their base after your long-range assault then hop on a grizzly or something fast and steal the flag. Tank people should focus on taking out Beam Turrets. This is crucial because they prevent Hawks from getting in and causing mayhem.Sometimes, a hawk will fly at you, spinning and belching rockets. Try to stay steady and shoot it down- you have more health than Hawks and at a minimum you both will die if you do hit it. It gives you a cool achievement along with some xp, and thoroughly upsets that guy sitting in a living room far away, who just failed with his hawk. But yes, a tanks main job is to destroy buildings. Tanks are not as heavy duty as could be expected however, and beam turrets will target you if you get very close, so stay far away until they have been obliterated. Feel free to challenge a lone enemy, you will win. Try to take out any vehicles (Razorbacks, Speeders) that try to make their way from their base to yours. Try to control no mans land. Build Outposts if your in a good position. But yes, both attack and defend I would say, staying in the middle between the two bases.

If you like running and shooting with your own character, not a tanks missile launcher or a hawks fast moving mayhem, then read this paragraph. Rule number 1: build Outposts near their base, set up camps near the enemy. 2: make sure you are prepared. gather all the weapons before charging in. 3: think on the fly, if you have just dropped right into the enemy base and are surrounded, build a auto turret or a Grizzly to take out some of them before you, yourself drop. You have two options when Building these, either try to build them on top of an enemy and crush them, or build them a short distance away so they don't get destroyed or stolen. 4: don't use a Rocket Launcher in close combat situations with other on-foot players, it is hard to hit with them, and they reload slowly. Try using the Shotgun, and rushing them if it is one enemy. If its multiple enemies, build an auto turret a good distance away from them and hide behind something to regain health. 5: Use prior knowledge. You have played shooters, shoot things! 6: Use the buildings, they are all designed for something, all of them are helpful, use them to your advantage.

If you want to be defensive, build lots of beam turrets if its a heavy loadout, build walls inside a Force Field. Build a Force field- at least one- and protect it well. Build auto turrets near the Force Field generator so that if a hawk lands to destroy it you have some defense. Block any back entrances to your flag. Do not build your maximum amount of buildings in case other people want to build outposts near the enemy flag. Be smart, obviously. Don't build something that isn't defensive right next to another one of the same kind (two tank depots in the same four feet). Build all ways to attack the enemies base in a neat little place. Players on your team that go for the opponents flag often build a speeder depot at a good distance from the main base, at a place inconvenient to anyone else but where they happened to be at the time, destroy that speeder depot, and build another facing outward from the main base. Build Force Fields around Beam turrets, or at least have some cover for the beam turrets so that the enemy tanks can destroy them from a far. don't destroy it if someone doesn't follow this rule, its still a beam turret, its still helpful.

You can switch between these different playing styles, except that if your a hawk you should get really good at them. The hawks themselves are not overpowered, but with a skilled user they can be. I hope this helped, now go and dominate the opponent.

Blog Post: Starhawk lets you build the fight

I couldn't wait for Starhawk. Then, I almost didn't get because of the critism. When I finally bought it I thought it was a blast. Couldn't beleive of some of the stuff the critics were saying. Starhawk puts you in the middle of the battle and let you build whatever you want in this TPS.

Graphics are good. They have comic book like cutscenes that look alot like infamous. Still enviroments look great, and characters look good to. Story is all right. They talk about gettin pay a whole lot, and it just not amazing. Plus, the score is pretty good.

Gameplay is pretty fun. There's about 4-6 hour campaign overall. What all you can build, use, and fly in is just great. Also has a great multiplayer. Probably one of Starhawks strong suits.

Overall, Starhawk is a pretty fun game. In my opinion, takes to much from the press, but at the same time, not perfect. Still a great game, and a good game to have if you want to try something different. That's why I would give Starhawk a

9 out of 10

Blog Post: The unconsidered Multiplayer

This game is worth the money. Even though the campaign was sort of repetitive, it had a great, in-depth story. The cutscenes reminded me of inFamous, and the AI for both your allies and enemies are limited, but not as bad as some of the other games I've played. The multiplayer, on the other hand, was phenomenal. The large-scale battles (up to 32 players at once) had a lot of action. The new Build and Battle system added a twist of strategy to the mix of third-person shooter/action. Remember how in Halo and other shooters, how you had to search for good sniping spots? In Starhawk, you can build one for yourself. The diverse building options allowed you to build your own bases and perfect your own playing style. Each player can become an expert in their own field, whether it is pilot, sniper, technician, melee, stealth, builder... The possibilities are limited only by the resources at hand. The drop pod system allows for easy elimination of annoying campers. Character customization was remarkably diverse - you can make your own symbol (which will appear on certain pieces of armor and any vehicle you are driving), as well as choose accessories for your head, body, and legs. Paint jobs for your vehicles are also an option. New options are unlocked as you level up, so you don't have to tediously save up cash like you have to in, say, Uncharted 3. Bottom line: This game is truly deserving of the title: "Best multiplayer at E3."

Blog Post: Starhawk review

Welcome to the new frontier.

Starhawk is a third person shooter real time strategy game set in the space/future setting. Aside from running on the ground you can fly mechs(Hawks) in the sky and travel in different vehicles. Many reviews have given this game lower scores mainly because of the weak "campaign", which should have been called "tutorial". In the campaign you play as Emmett Graves, a bad ass dude tasked with defending base after base from waves of invading attackers with levels being strung together by animated cutscenes which i thought were actually pretty cool. It's basically a tutorial of sorts to prepare you for the real meat and potatoes of the game, the multiplayer. There are 4 game types for competitive multiplayer which include CTF, Zones, TDM, and DM. There is also Co-Op which i havent played yet(i continue to get "Failed to Connect" errors) One of the main aspects of this game and an innovative one at that is the Build and Battle system. You can build different things across the battlefield when you collect enough rift energy such as tanks, jetpacks, supply bunkers, mechs, buggies, bikes, and walls to fortify your base. It takes a while to grasp the concept but once you have a good idea of what to do in the game there is loads of fun to be had. With an addictive ranking system and lots and lots of unlockables character skins and paint jobs for the assortment of vehicles, there is plenty to keep you playing game after game. Light Box Interactive announced that all map packs for Starhawk will be free which is great reasons to keep coming back. If you enjoy fast paced online action or just want to try something like nothing else out there then Starhawk is the way to go.

Blog Post: Warhawk and Starhawk

Good war team long rank ps3 have trophies hard warhawk hard add-on favorite all.

flag blue soldier clothes normal enemy red clothes metal in Warhawk different Starhawk blue soldier enemy black human africa monster.

Warhawk Weapon, tank , 4X4 car, and Plane different Starhawk build set weapon speed.

PlayStation Network like Warhawk.

Wiki Page: 10.00

U MAD BRO?

Wiki Page: gameinformers reviews going downhill, a little

...a 7.5 for starhawk, I mean come on. Have some respect for how hard lightbox interactive worked on this game, even have a positive person review of this game. I mean, this is just one dudes opinion, and it is making the game look bad. i was extremely disapointed seeing this review and can't believe how picky you guys are being with video games lately. I'm not even mad, just dissapointed...alot

Frankxthexbunny edited:

And that is how you play starhawk! thanks for reading this informative and totally not retarded GUIDE that explains how a lot of work=a good game. Instead of deleting this guide I am going to use this to explain to anyone who reads this: we are NOT paid to review. We can give our user reviews (and be verbally abused when you review a game you clearly havent played) and we can make our guides but this is their website and this is not only disrespectful but not even done in an intelligent manner. you disagree with their review write a counter review. if you dont want to dont bother. seriously. this is bullcrap. I wish I was a mod.

I respect the guys at gameinformer a lot. like seriously. I really want to intern for them. get off their back.

With peace and love,

--Tye Van Horn--

Ag3nt Shadow edited:

I completely agree with the last edit. First off, don't write a review of a review in a spot that is meant for a game guide. Second, if you want to read a great review of this game, go look at IGN..they gave it a 9. GI has every right to write a review based on the reviewer's own experiences and opinions about the game. He has played it, you have not. If the story is lacking, and even IGN said it was, then maybe that is a stronger down side for this particular reviewer then the IGN reviewer.

Reviews are simply one person or publication's opinion, get over yourself and if you want to try a game out, or you think you will like it, then buy it. People put too much stock into reviews. I have loved games that got low reviews, and I have hated games that got stellar reviews. Take them for what they are, OPINIONS. Game Informer's staff does a great job and this website is my personal favorite..my OPINION...give them some credit.

Blog Post: Just Because it isn't CoD doesn't mean its not gunna be good

This review sounds like its compared to a CoD game this game is great it just sounds like the guy who reviewed it had a tick up his but.

Blog Post: Fantastic

This game was incredible. If the story is the sole reason for the review then please give a better one. I am a long time gameinformer supporter but its unfortunate for some of the reviews cuz i relay on them strongly. If i play in the beta and its fun and i enjoy it then its a def. buy, but i just hope people dont get because of this review and some others because it is fun......

HOPE TO SEE THE PEOPLE WHO GET IT ONLINE!

These guys gave a review i am ok with.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/122/1224407p1.html

Blog Post: This Battlefield Is Not For Foot Soldiers

LightBox Interactive’s spiritual successor to Warhawk takes to the cosmos with a novel mix of RTS and third-person shooting. While I appreciate the large player counts and wide-open battlefields, the on-foot gunplay and lack of multiplayer modes are disappointing.[Excerpt]

Starhawk features a sci-fi western theme reminiscent of the cult television hit Firefly, minus the charm and memorable characters. The environments are impressively large and open, though your interactions with the world are limited apart from the structures you order down from space. The inanimate parts of the environment look fine, but character animations and other visual details pale in comparison to most modern shooters. Outcasts (the story mode’s enemies and one of the multiplayer factions) are particularly ugly thanks to their constant blue glow, which is caused by rift energy, the main resource you fight over for the duration of the game.

The new single-player campaign has been a major talking point for LightBox, but it accomplishes little beyond introducing players to Starhawk’s fairly complicated gameplay. You play as Emmett Graves, a gun for hire who protects rift mines from invading Outcasts. While the setup is interesting enough, every level is built on a multiplayer map, and your objectives boil down to defending an area from incoming waves of bad guys on land and in space, before moving on to the next location.

Rocketing down into battle via a launch pod is always satisfying

Most levels require a healthy mix of on-foot shootouts, land and air-based vehicular combat, and strategy-oriented base building. I was impressed by how easy it is to switch between these gameplay styles; you might gun down a squad of enemies, build a few auto turrets and walls for defense, and then jump into a Starhawk for an impromptu dogfight all in a matter of minutes. While I had fun creating choke points and mowing down rows of mindless foes with auto turrets, some missions drag on far too long (including the final, ridiculously drawn-out boss battle), and I ran into a few frustrating checkpoints. Throw in some cheaply made animated cutscenes, forgettable characters, and dumb AI, and I was happy to move onto multiplayer by the time the credits rolled.

Unfortunately, I have mixed feelings for Starhawk’s multiplayer as well. On one hand, I appreciate the wide-open battlefields, 16v16 match sizes, and strategic elements. However, the emphasis on building structures and vehicular combat makes the ground game the least compelling component, which is a problem for a third-person shooter. Aside from the ever-entertaining spawning mechanic that has you rocketing down to battle in a launch pod (and hopefully pancaking an enemy in the process), being on foot with an assault rifle and pistol feels downright impotent when up against rocket-equipped Starhawks and heavily fortified bases. When your best chance to help your team is to build a wall around your base or place an auto turret, Starhawk’s sense of achievement pales to that of other team-oriented shooters.

For better or worse, the gameplay cycle of multiplayer also heavily favors the team that works together. Successful teams earn more rift energy, which allows them to build more structures. These structures provide more weapons and vehicles, which in turn makes it easier for them to kill more enemies and get more energy. While I played a few matches with late game turnarounds, most matches were heavily one-sided affairs – or stalemates if both teams focused on building up their bases.

Piloting a Starhawk is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the game

My biggest surprise and disappointment with multiplayer was the lack of modes: Besides the standard deathmatch and team deathmatch, Starhawk only offers capture-the-flag and the domination-style Zones mode. There’s also a boring (and sometimes broken) 2-player co-op horde mode, which no one would blame you for skipping. CTF and Zones are as fun as they are in any other online shooter, but given Starhawk’s interesting mix of gameplay, I would have enjoyed some more creative scenarios for competitive play. The lack of modes is even more perplexing given Starhawk’s robust online support, which includes character customization, clans, leaderboards, an event/tournament calendar, and plenty of options for setting up your own matches.

I really wanted to like Starhawk, and got some enjoyment out of the open battlefields, RTS elements, and large-scale matches. However, the lackluster single-player campaign is entirely forgettable, and without some more creative modes, the multiplayer’s lopsided (albeit entertaining) action keeps Starhawk grounded on the launch pad.

Blog Post: Latest Starhawk Trailer Is A Quick Refresher On Single-Player

Starhawk's multiplayer has soaked up much of the game's prerelease coverage, and for good reason. Up to 32 players can compete online, battling on foot and in the air for domination. If multiplayer isn't your thing, however, you won't be left out. A new trailer for the game sets up Starhawk's single-player campaign.[Excerpt]

Players take on the role of Emmett Graves, a scavenger for hire. Things get personal when he's asked to take on a mission in his former hometown of White Sands. Suffice it to say some shady dudes have moved into town, and Graves isn't going to try to talk his way out the problem. Take a look at the trailer below.

Starhawk is due out on the PlayStation 3 on May 8.

Blog Post: Vehicles Tear Into the Spotlight In New Trailer

Vehicles are a big part of the Starhawk experience, so it's probably a good idea to prepare yourself on what they each have to offer. Sony has released a wave of images from the game's single and multiplayer modes, and they've thrown in a dev diary just for fun.[Excerpt]

As expected, the Warhawk successor is filled with vehicular and on-foot mayhem, with plenty of pretty explosions. Once your brain has processed those images, take a look at the dev diary below. It features LightBox Interactive's president and CEO, Dylan Jobe, talking about how the team is putting the finishing touches on the game following its open beta.
