Luckily, a few games defy expectations by breaking the mold and delivering a fantastic, genuinely fun experience. Snoopy Flying Ace is one of those games.

Why on earth did they make a giant, slow blimp a bomber?

Let me start by adding a condition: This game requires Xbox LIVE Gold to truly enjoy, and I am assuming you have it if you are reading this review. There is a single-player mode, but the story is forgettable and the challenge is usually negligible. It's always enjoyable to take down wave after wave of enemies in dogfights, but other challenges like aerial follow-the-leader and rescuing Snoopy's little bird friends get tiresome quickly. It doesn't help that the only competent AI is the leaders of each squadron, like Lucy or Charlie Brown, but even then the only enemy I ever needed more than 30 seconds of focus to shoot down was the Red Baron himself, who dodges attacks with ridiculous ease.

Single-Player Review:

Pros:

An excellent way to learn the game without getting slaughtered in multiplayer.

The variety of missions avoids repetition.

Surprisingly competent AI squadron leaders will give you a challenge.

Short and sweet. (Less than 2 hours to finish, only a bit longer to get all the medals.)

Cons:

Idiotic cannon-fodder enemies feel cheap to mow down.

Some challenges designed to offer an alternative to dogfight just feel boring.

Every challenge must be played twice, once for each difficulty, to get all the medals.

The above con wouldn't be so bad if the hard difficulty was, you know, hard. It's not.

Verdict: It's a decent diversion and it serves the purpose of a training mode for multiplayer, but I wouldn't pay $10 for it on its own. Don't buy this game if you don't have Xbox LIVE Gold.

Chaos!

Multiplayer is a whole different ballpark. It's fast-paced, exciting, and challenging. You'll match skills against players of every level, and while matches can occasionally be lopsided, it's never boring whether you're playing against 1 opponent or 15.

The Red Baron Avatar Reward

There are 100 levels divided into 20 ranks, and those who hit the ceiling are rewarded with a spot on the Flying Aces leaderboard as well as the Red Baron Avatar Reward. It should take an average player 10 to 30 hours to reach Flying Ace status, depending on their level of skill. I've seen players with k/d ratios of 0.5 or worse slowly grind their way up, as well as virtuosos that maintain a 2.0 or better average all the way to the top.

Power-ups add another dimension to the game, and using them to your advantage can make a big difference. There are standard pick-me-up power-ups like a speed boost or a temporary shield that makes you invincible for a few seconds, but the really good ones are earned, not scattered around the map. Four kills in a row gets you a Woodstock Gunner, a tiny yellow bird standing on the tail of your plane and wielding two six-shooters to deter enemies trying to hit you from behind. Nine kills without a death replaces your plane with Snoopy's iconic red Doghouse, which is not only faster, tougher, and more maneuverable than other planes, but also provides a floating crosshair on your regular gun that helps lock on to enemies much more accurately. Killing someone with a Woodstock Gunner rewards 7 points instead of 5, and a Doghouse kill gives 10, making them choice targets for every other player.

The Much-Coveted Doghouse Plane

The key to success in multiplayer lies in deploying your arsenal effectively. Besides your regular machine gun, there are 13 secondary weapons. Weapons are equipped two at a time, switching back and forth between them with the right bumper or B button. (Assuming you use the standard controls, as there are 3 sets of controls to choose from) Each one has a different effective range, and the trick is choosing the loadout that fits your play style. Do you tend to fight up close? Try the EMP or the Molten Flail. Prefer to do your business from a distance? Reach for the Leech or the Comet Rockets. Got a different strategy? Customize accordingly. There are plenty of ways to bring the pain to your rivals.

Multiplayer offers a wide variety of game modes to choose from, but a few are clearly the most popular. Dogfight and Team Dogfight are perpetually crowded, Pigskin (think football in planes) gets more players on weekends, and Capture the Flag usually has a couple people ready and waiting in the lobby. Less popular are Dog Pile and Team Dog Pile, where a single person or team must hold onto a glowing bone for a set amount of time. It's a solid mode, but gets a lot less love for some reason.

Maps are varied from Egyptian ruins to a massive dam, but all share a few common elements: 2 distinct sides for teams to spawn on, and 2 turrets. Spawn points are fairly well placed, and usually you'll avoid cheap deaths just fine. The turrets are key to domination. Learning their range on each map and employing them effectively can mean the difference between 10 kills and 20. Learning which weapons are most effective at destroying turrets is just as important.

Multiplayer Review:

Pros:

A variety of game modes keep things fresh.

There are always plenty of players of every skill level to match up with.

Well-balanced weapons ensure there is no true beat-all combination.

  Endless replay value.

Cons:

When the host of a game leaves, the match ends abruptly.

I sometimes experienced lag while hosting games.

The matchmaking system is not very good at balancing the teams.

The map selection is lacking slightly, and all maps are chosen at random.

Verdict: Multiplayer is definitely where the fun is at, and my minor gripes don't add up to much of anything in comparison to the fun I've had with it. A quick match can be had any time you like, but it holds up for lengthier play sessions as well. Again, do not buy this game unless you subscribe to Xbox LIVE Gold.

Two new DLC packs were released after the game launched, one meager, the other substantial. I've decided to give them each their own review below.

The "Dogs of War" map pack is really simple: 2 new multiplayer maps for $1.

The "Kaiser's Spike" map has a mountain in the center with a tunnel running through it, a castle on one side, and a village on the other. Players must fly over or through the mountain to engage in battle, and occasional explosions rocking the mountain cause rocks to fall.

The "Aces Airway" map is a floating battlefield in the clouds. Every building is suspended by propellers, and visibility is low due to the clouds players must fly through. Turret use is absolutely critical here for success, as their effective range is greater than anywhere else.

"Dogs of War" Map Pack Review:

Pros:

  It's only a dollar.

It adds some more variety to the online play.

  Both maps feel distinctly new.

Cons:

What can you fault this for? It's just 80 points. You've probably got that much left over anyway.

Verdict: 50 cents a map is a hard deal to beat. Grab this DLC with the spare change you've got from buying that other XBLA game.

The "Suppertime of Destruction" expansion pack really adds to the replay factor. It packs in 2 brand-new planes, 3 added secondary weapons, 5 new multiplayer game modes, 3 extra Achievements, 11 additional costumes, and 30 more plane skins!

This DLC is more than just a fresh coat of paint, too. Some of the additions can make a big difference for your strategy, especially the new "kite class" planes:

The Whirlybird is small and fast, just like its pilot.

The Whirlybird is simple enough: A sniper rifle attached to a helicopter. Said rifle really packs a punch too, taking down most planes in only 1 or 2 hits. This is the only plane capable of hovering in place.

The Dragonfly is piloted exclusively by your avatar.

The Dragonfly has a weapon called the Jammer, which is basically an electric beam that shoots straight from the nose of the plane. At first it feels week, but if you can keep it locked on one opponent long enough, it will sap health and turbo at the same time and jump to neighboring planes!

Both of the above planes have much greater speed and maneuverability than the rest, but at a trade-off of far less armor.

The 3 new weapons might come in handy too:

Thumpers are basically EMP generators attached to tiny parachutes. Launch these in the midst of a fray and watch the kills rack up as your opponents fly straight through a field of electric death.

Seekers don't do much damage, but these tiny magnetic missiles are so accurate and reload so quickly you won't care. Hammer slow-moving opponents with them nonstop for best results.

Lil' Yellows are tiny rockets guided by bird pilots that do better-than-average damage and are hard to shake, but where they excel is their range. Fire several in a row from across the map and the last thing your enemies hear will be maniacal chirping.

Finally, the 5 new game modes almost double your options for playing online, but are a bit lacking in the replay-value department. Here's how I would rank them:

1. Top Dogs - Shoot down the other team's "Ace" (a player with upgraded armor) to win.

2. Dirty Boy - One team is "infected" by Pig-Pen's dust cloud, which gives them low health, but a single touch to a non-infected plane equals a one-hit kill. Teams swap halfway through.

3. Team Wild Woodstock - A variation on Capture the Flag, players work together to try to grab as many flying birds as possible, and then return them to your team's cage for points.

4. Wild Woodstock - Same as above, minus the teamwork.

5. Turret Defense - Requires at least 4 players to start, as the objective is for a team to hold both turrets at once for a set time to win. This mode is so unpopular I've never played a full game. The other players always quit before the end.

The rest of the additions from the DLC are purely cosmetic, but it's fun to have them anyway. Costumes like Franklin's football gear are cool, as are the new plane skins. 50 Gamerscore has been added in the form of 3 fairly simple Achievements.

"Suppertime of Destruction" Expansion Pack Review:

Pros:

The new game modes are fun to try.

Added weapons give players more strategic options.

The new planes make a huge difference in how matches are played.

  Adds even more replay value.

Cons:

Most of the new game modes aren't as good as the original 6.

New weapons are all spammed frequently.

Occasionally, the new planes feel cheap.

Verdict: For a $5 expansion pack to a $10 game I might expect a bit more content than offered here, but it's worth it if only for the two new planes. The Whirlybird has become my personal favorite.

Overall, Snoopy Flying Ace is one of the best deals on Xbox LIVE Arcade at $10, and it gets better when you add in the cheap DLC. Grab the demo, play every last one of those 30 precious free minutes of multiplayer, and decide for yourself. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Forum Post: Snoopy With Guns!?!?

Im mean really, The game sounds ok, but Snoopy with rockets and machine guns! I'm glad to find not only do they enjoy playing with me as there favorite Peanuts character, but that I too enjoyed it on and offline. The offline campaign will get repetitive do to the same modes being used over, but thankfully they included co-op and a ton of diferent locales to keep it fresh. Flying Ace has the competitve multiplayer modes you would expect and they are all fun, but the best one by far is the most original, Aerial Football. It's basically football using airplanes, and it's a blast to play. So if your looking for a adorable, family friendly, yet competitive dogfighting game, then look no further.

Blog Post: For 800 points, this is a must have

After playing the trial game I immediately downloaded the full version and took the skies in multiplayer. The various game modes keep the action fresh and the game runs very smoothly in 16 player skirmishes. Of course the only drawback, in my opinion, is the limited customization each player has over their fighter and weapons. But for only 800 Microsoft points, Smart Bomb definitely gave me my money's worth. Some of the solo campaign missions were pretty tough for me.

A lot of times in multiplayer I found myself lost looking at my mini-map and struggling to find the whereabouts of enemies in my proximity. I only wish the radar took changing altitudes into account and adjusted the dots (up arrow if above, down arrow if below).

Blog Post: not exactly kosher, but good.

I just play this and i have to agree it is certainly fun! In this Crimson Skies-inspired flight combat title players engaged in perilous air races and explosive dogfights while behind the wheel of the famous Sopwith Camel. Now the dashing WWI canine pilot makes his triumphant return in Snoopy Flying Ace, the charming and incredibly solid XBLA spiritual successor to Red Baron that will make even the most hardened Ace smile. [Excerpt]

Snoopy Flying Ace offers single-, multiplayer, and co-op missions and challenges that put your plane handling and combat skills to the test. You’ll fly through rings in a timed sequence, protect precious monuments in exotic locales from Egyptian deserts to nighttime Parisian cityscapes, man giant turrets to fend off a fleet of enemies, or help Woodstock’s friends escape suspended mine traps that surround them. A friend can even join the fray at any time, which comes in handy during larger skirmishes such as the Zeppeligeddon missions that can, at times, be too much for a single beagle (though not impossible – come on, it’s Snoopy.) You’ll also have a chance to tinker with customization options, though you’re limited to simply choosing a plane type based on size, handling, and vitality, or practicing with different weapon types such as Leech homing missles or the explosive EMP that will help you blow your friends’ planes to smithereens. No worries about the horrors of war, though; avatars safely parachute out of the plane. Smart Bomb keeps the action family-friendly, so Lucy van Pelt won’t lose her face in an explosive deathmatch anytime soon.

One shortcoming with the single-player/co-op campaign is repetition of mission types across different environments. You’ll save Woodstock’s friends from mines on several occasions, with minimal variation aside from location. Nonetheless, these missions, though simple, do a great job at teaching players the game’s core mechanics before heading into the multiplayer space, where you’ll likely spend the bulk of your time.

Ace offers both free-for-all and team-based modes including your standard dogfight modes and CTF, and the far more interesting Dog Pile and Pigskin modes. In Dog Pile you’ll protect a bone that appears on the battlefield for two minutes while under attack by opponents. Pigskin, as the title implies, involves aerial football. You’ll pass the ball to teammates and try to drive it through your team’s goal posts, or on the defensive side you can shoot down your opponents for a “friendly” game of football. Multiplayer modes as a whole are chaotic and fun, plus awesome kill streak bonuses – such as the ability to fly the signature red dog house or having Woodstock join you as your tail gunner – is reason enough to keep coming back to work on your game.

Each mode supports 16 players, and I had no problems quickly finding a full match. If you’re looking for something private with a few friends or simply want to check out multiplayer modes on your own, you have the option to fill in spaces with AI bots. Amid the frenzied and explosive aerial action, I experienced minimal lag, and the game remained smooth overall.

Snoopy Flying Ace is a fun and accessible aerial arcade shooter with a whole lot of polish and personality. It may not offer a whole lot of depth, but for only 800 MS Points you still get quite a bit of game for your buck with more in the form of DLC on the way. Snoopy Flying Ace wins best in show for WWI flying beagle games, hands (paws?) down.

Want more Ace? Players piloted Snoopy's well-known Sopwith Camel and participated in dangerous air races, completed missions, and engaged in perilous dogfights (no pun intended). Come June 2 players will once again take flight in the Crimson Skies-inspired flight combat title Snoopy Flying Ace. This XBLA exclusive features customizable planes, single-player, multiplayer, and co-op modes, exotic locales, and who could forget Snoopy, his compadre Woodstock, and the rest of the Peanuts gang. We got a chance to chat with Smart Bomb's hilarious VP, Clark Stacey, to get the full scoop on Snoopy Flying Ace, a game that aims to live up to the original comic strips of Snoopy as the World Famous WWI Flying Ace as created by Charles M. Schulz. [Excerpt]

What was the idea behind creating a flight game starring Snoopy and the Peanuts gang?
Several years ago we made Snoopy vs. the Red Baron for multiple platforms. We were very proud of that game and it was a critical success, but the budget and time constraints that came from the publisher [Namco] left us feeling that we could have done a lot more. So we went to United Media and representatives of the Schulz family, and we licensed the property ourselves. That made it possible to pull out all the stops and create a game we think is going to appeal to hardcore action gamers as much as Snoopy fans. But of course, it was Charles M. Schulz’s original strips of Snoopy as the World Famous WWI Flying Ace that are the ultimate inspiration, and we’ve worked very hard to stay faithful to them.

Many have compared SFA to Crimson Skies, has any inspiration been drawn from this game?
We played a lot of Crimson Skies multiplayer on the original Xbox, and it certainly influenced SFA. It’s surprising there hasn’t been anything on the current generation of consoles that compares to it. Like Crimson, SFA is foremost a deep, but approachable multiplayer game. They did a great job of making their flight controls easy to pick up, so you could be online battling your friends right away, instead of battling the flight model.

SFA is based off of Snoopy’s grand visions of WWI. How is this delivered in the game?
We had a lot of fun with this. The game essentially takes place in Snoopy’s imagination – where he is by turns a dashing young WWI pilot wooing farmgirls in the French countryside, and the masterful and heroic pilot of a Sopwith Camel. Because we’re inside Snoopy’s addled vision of WWI, we were free to draw in the other Peanuts characters to play roles in Snoopy’s fantasy. When you see Snoopy hanging out in the Officers Club in the game, knocking back a few root beers with the lads, you’ll see what I mean.

Which Peanuts characters can we expect to see in the game? Will Woodstock make an appearance? Will they all be playable?
All 12 of the core Peanuts characters are here: Snoopy, Woodstock, Charlie Brown, Sally, Lucy, Linus, Schroeder, Franklin, Rerun, Pigpen, Peppermint Patty, and Marcie. All are playable, and so is the Red Baron!

What can you tell us about the single-player and co-op campaign? What sorts of missions (18 total) will players take on?
SFA started out a pure multiplayer game on XBLA, but we saw an opportunity to raise the Arcade bar. I think we have more action and long-term gameplay in this game than you’ll find in most retail titles. You’ll do barnstorming obstacle courses, attack massive aerial battleships with your squadron, use ground-based AA guns to repel waves of enemies, escort spy missions...Snoopy pretty much wins this war single-handedly. And you can do all that in co-op mode as well.

Can you describe some of the multiplayer modes (eight total) that will be available?
Best. CTF. Ever. Seriously, it’s incredibly addictive, and with 16 players in the world it’s just nuts. We’ve talked a little about the mode we call Pigskin, a team game which is basically like rugby in biplanes. There are more, but I have to leave a few surprises for launch day.

What sorts of plane customization options will be available? What kinds of weapons will players be able to add to their planes?
You can customize your airplane skin, and we’ll be adding more with DLC later. The weapon selection is insane. Every plane has a base machine gun, and you can put any two secondary weapons on your plane that you want to carry into battle. There’s an arsenal of 15 to choose from, ranging from mines, rockets, gas grenades and punt guns to really out-there weapons like the Molten Flail, which is three flaming spiked cannonballs on chains that you can spin beneath your plane to become a flying weed-eater of destruction.

There will be 10 different battlefields in SFA, and we know one will be located in Africa and another in Europe. Can you tell us about other locations that will open up in the game?
Historical accuracy is very important to us, so we stayed as far away from it as possible. We’re particularly proud of Paris, where we managed to cram all of the major landmarks of the city into a few square blocks. But we also have ice caves, Mediterranean islands, a famous giant dam that never existed, and other landmarks that fans of the Flying Ace might recognize.

DLC has already been announced in the form of avatar clothing and accessories. What sorts of downloadables can players expect? Will there eventually be new characters, levels or weapons?
Yep, all three plus pie. New planes, plane skins, character costumes and game modes as well.

Finally, why should fans of this classic franchise pick up this game and what do you hope they get out of it? Will we see any other Snoopy-themed games in the future?
We’ve always been fascinated by the history of canine aviation, and Snoopy obviously played a pretty pivotal role in it. He’s really the Michael Jordan of dog combat pilots – nobody else even comes close. This isn’t just a game for Snoopy fans, though. If you’ve ever been in a frenetic FPS game that gives you the chance to fly a plane, only to find that the planes are totally uncontrollable and about as fun as an ear infection, we want you to try this. It’s the best flight combat game on the Xbox 360 by a country mile. And when you see Snoopy and Woodstock as an action game duo, I think you’ll agree that there must be more adventures for them in the future.

Snoopy Flying Ace will be available on XBLA June 2. A price has yet to be announced.
