Not too long after Square Enix picked up the publishing rights and renamed it Sleeping Dogs. Even with the game's hectic development cycle it still manages to be one of the best open world games to come out this year.

Your Hong Kong adventure starts in a shanty motel. You play Wei Shen, an undercover cop who has a very different approach to justice. Your mission is to infiltrate the biggest crime syndicate in Hong Kong, the Triads, and slowly work your way up the ladder to bring down them down. But this isn't just a story of justice, and soon Wei, and his peers, start questioning if he is playing a Triad, or becoming one. The story was surprisingly compelling and left me excited to see what was coming next all the way up to the end.

Sleeping Dogs is very similar to other games of its kind. There is a main goal, but tons of side things to do when you want to take a break. You are able to explore the city at your leisure and can do anything from the start. The game world is seemingly empty to begin with but starts to fill in as the game progresses. You can do favors for people, arrange drug busts, street races, fight clubs, and of course collect things. Statues will unlock moves for Wei to use. Health shrines will give Wei more health. If you were looking for something different from the open world formula, Sleeping Dogs is not that game.

One thing Sleeping Dogs does do differently is giving players a reason not to go crazy in their vehicles and go on killing sprees. You have two meters, a cop meter and a triad meter. The two meters don't necessarily represent morality, but more just the way you handle missions. Things like driving safely, performing drug busts, and other cop related things will raise your cop meter, unlocking things more focused on armed gameplay. Getting headshots, performing environmental kills, and doing triad missions will raise your triad meter, unlocking melee focused upgrades. You also have a face meter. Doing favors for people will raise this meter, allowing you to buy nicer cars and clothes.

The combat is fun and addictive and very reminiscent of Rocksteady's Batman games. Combat is free flowing and simple once you get the hang of it. You will be performing counters, jump kicks, roundhouses, and a flurry of other moves based on timing rather than button combinations. You can also perform environmental kills which can be brutal and satisfying.

Gunplay on the other hand feels more like a chore and not nearly as deep and fun as the melee. Luckily most of the big gunfights don't happen till near the end and isn't required for most situations.

The voice acting is all very well done and provides a good mix of English and Chinese which really makes Hong Kong feel alive.

Sleeping Dogs is in my opinion one of the better open world games to come out this year. But that doesn't mean it's completely free of problems that plague the genre. Many of the side things to do in the city can become repetitive after doing them once or twice. The main missions, while having some set-piece moments, are in large mostly just drive here, kill these gang members, pick up this dude and come back. The missions are also sometimes filled with menial tasks suck as singing karaoke, or showing someone around the city, and it really made the game drag at times. Although I never ran into any big bugs there are reports of some big ones, and even game breaking ones so be on the lookout for those.

All in all I was very surprised with how much I enjoyed Sleeping Dogs. And while it doesn't do anything groundbreaking with the genre, it is an excellent game with interesting character, story, and gameplay.

8.5/10

Blog Post: Sleeping Dogs Review

                       0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false

For all the comparisons to Grand Theft Auto that Sleeping Dogs is inevitably going to receive, it holds its own. Sure it’s an open world game set in a densely populated urban area controlled by underworld kingpins. And obviously there are a fair amount of gunfights, murders, police chases and car crashes. Sure those tropes are all part of the experience. However, what’s really surprising is that there wasn’t a hint of irony or cynicism in the game. Sleeping Dogs wasn’t pretending to be something it wasn’t. It’s a game that utilizes a well-established formula and executes it to create it’s own unique adventure.

While familiar in plot, story and mechanics, Sleeping Dogs also felt foreign and exotic. I knew from the onset the type of GTA in Hong Kong experience that was in store. What I didn’t know was how it was going to be presented. The Sleeping Dogs version of Hong Kong setting is a big appeal. The city is sprawling, exotic, glamorous and dangerous. Driving through the city streets feels like there’s something new and exciting around every corner. It’s a city that unless you’ve actually visited or are a Hong Kong cinema aficionado, you’re probably unfamiliar with. Unlike New York City or Los Angeles, which is well represented in American pop culture, i.e. Liberty City and Los Santos respectively.

As an undercover cop, Wei Shen is given the impossible task of infiltrating the Triads, a vicious gang operation that is in the middle of a civil war. Inevitably, Wei is sucked in to the organization. The power, money, fast cars, and girls are all there for his taking. In comparison, a meager and thankless life as a detective in a corrupt police force holds little to no appeal and this is the biggest drawback of the game. There wasn’t anything at stake for Wei as a detective besides his career. On the other hand, he had everything to lose as a gangster, his family, friends, wealth and most importantly, his life. I wonder why the undercover cop plot was even established in the first place. I would have preferred if it had just been Wey struggling to make ends meet and then using crime as a theoretical solution with all the consequential problems that ensue.

Sleeping Dogs’ story is essentially divided in half between the Triads and the Detectives. The two storylines unfold simultaneously as you progress through the story and jump back and forth between them. This is another part of the bigger overall problem with the game. The alternation between the two stories was jarring if nothing else because the detective storyline was undeniably dull and uninspired. At times they seemed disjointed almost like they were two different games. However, the biggest issue is that I never really believed Wei was a cop at heart. The fact that Wei killed hundreds of people, hijacked cars, ran over countless innocent people, stole millions of dollars and caused an unprecedented amount of property damage doesn’t convince me otherwise. But he’s a good guy at heart and that’s why the player cares for him. The destruction is just incidental.

Minus the depth, story, and memorable characters, Sleeping Dogs is, and I’m not ashamed to admit, every bit as fun as GTA IV. Please note that I didn’t say good. Even the most jaded GTA fans that will accuse Sleeping Dogs of a hack job, will still have a blast. The combat system takes some getting used to but once it’s mastered, Wei is transformed from a lowly police detective with a few strong punches to the unstoppable equivalent of Bruce Lee. There’s something very satisfying about taking down an entire mob of enemies with only a fist as your primary weapon. I found myself getting into brawls on purpose just so I could exercise Wei’s muscles and newfound abilities.

I spent a lot of time casually cruising around Hong Kong. I used running errands, colleting items, and completing missions as an excuse but all I wanted to do was drive and listen to music taking in the gritty neon scenery and idyllic peaceful vistas. Sleeping Dogs might not reach the level of near perfection that it was inspired by, but where it excels in is creating a world that you want to happily get lost in.

Blog Post: Game informer got it wrong!

To be compleatly honest game informer was way off this time. It plays like a mix between the freedom and scale of GTA and the combat of Batman Arkham City. The combat is brutal and beautiful and the character (Wei) reminds me of Bruce Lee given that there are three Bruce Lee outfits I know of in the game. The gun play is good but there seems to be an absence of guns at least during my point of the game. I have used guns in the game but there aren't many to find so far in free roaming. All in all super good game. I've been playing this for hours and I give it nothing less than a 9. The game is fantastic on so many fronts, especially when we're talking about hand-to-hand. He has so many moves and takes down that it can be almost overwhelming. I haven't even reached the gunplay yet and the game still kept me hooked for hours on end. This game is far from a 7.75 and is definitely in the 8-9.5 range. You definitely have to give this game a shot. Putting players in the shoes of undercover cop Wei Shen, the game tasks players with infiltrating Hong Kong’s expansive Triad criminal organization. The experience is worth playing, but the buggy gameplay makes former publisher Activision’s lack of faith in the title understandable.[Excerpt]

On the surface, Sleeping Dogs is organized in a manner similar to Grand Theft Auto’s tried-and-tested formula. Wei is free to explore the city at his leisure, performing side quests or story missions whenever he chooses. While the story itself doesn’t offer much in the way of creative mission objectives, a healthy assortment of distractions are available. Wei can arrange drug busts via security cameras, participate in fight clubs and street races, find hidden statues that unlock new melee moves at the dojo, and pray at shrines to increase your maximum health.

Most activities take you down a unique progression ladder. Performing police-oriented duties like drug busts unlocks new gunplay abilities. Staying undercover and performing tasks for the gang levels up your Triad ladder, which grants you new melee skills. Helping the citizens of Hong Kong raises your Face level, which allows you to purchase fancier cars and clothing. Fans of GTA’s hidden packages can keep an eye out for dozens of hidden lock boxes throughout the city. They reward you with tons of cash, but there isn’t much to spend it on outside of cars, clothes, and food that grants temporary stat boosts.

Fans of Rocksteady’s Batman games should enjoy Sleeping Dogs’ fighting system, as it features Wei countering and attacking like he was the Caped Crusader himself. Sleeping Dogs features satisfying (albeit familiar) encounters, and you learn several painful-looking moves throughout the game. You can also pull off brutal environmental attacks. My personal favorite was body-slamming a baddie into a wooden pallet of swordfish heads, impaling him with their sharp noses.

Taking on Hong Kong’s underworld with your fists and feet is great, but the gunplay is cookie-cutter by comparison. Shootouts only become frequent later in the game, and their generic nature made me want to charge out from behind cover and deliver a few jump kicks instead of shooting bullets.

When everything works correctly, Sleeping Dogs is fun. Combat is rewarding, the leveling system stands out from the open-world pack, and driving feels natural (not to mention fun, considering the ram ability that every car possesses). Unfortunately, I encountered several bugs and other issues. During a mission that featured me being driven around, a vehicle blocked the road and I couldn’t proceed. While learning a new melee move at the dojo, the game forced me to quit the mission because it didn’t recognize that I was performing it correctly. I had to restart one mission multiple times because the non-player character I was supposed to follow wouldn’t spawn (although I could hear his voice). On top of bugs like these that forced checkpoint restarts, I also experienced minor annoyances like a lack of transitional animations during combat and lines of dialogue that abruptly cut off.

Sleeping Dogs has enough entertainment value to justify Square Enix’s decision to save it from cancellation, but it also displays a lack of polish that makes its troubled development evident. For fans of open world games, it comes at a good time. Gamers who purchased Saints Row: The Third most likely finished it months ago, and we still don’t have a confirmed release window for Grand Theft Auto V. If you’re looking to explore the criminal underbelly of a city and get in some trouble, you could do worse than Sleeping Dogs while you wait for Rockstar’s top dog.
