Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure

Scribblenauts Unmasked Lets You Make Heroic Abominations

Yesterday in New York, Warner Bros. gave us a new look at Scribblenauts Unmasked. The title is coming very soon, but this visit was focused largely on two aspects: procedurally generated mini-quests and the hero creator.

In each of the game's areas, including Gotham City, Metropolis, and the Green Lantern home world of OA, citizens will offer up short quests that earn Maxwell "reputation" points. These are new each time you visit a region, and the rewards are used to unlock new parts in the creation suite.

You'll also have access to the Batcomputer, which serves as a DC wiki. Don't know who a character is? Just click on him/her and bring up the Batcomputer. It's ingenious, and serves to make the game more friendly to Scribblenauts fans who might only know Batman and Superman.

The Batcomputer has come obscure entries. Yes, the Wonder Twins are in, but Alex Navarro from Giant Bomb who was sitting next to me dug deep. After finding a character named "Arm-Fall-Off Boy" we crossed our fingers and decided to see how deep the roster went. To our surprise, even this Justice League reject made the cut.

We had the chance to create our own character, also. Starting with a banana, our guide popped on Aquaman's head (from one of the many variations included in the title), his arms, and some kind of fluffy mammal tail.

As you can see in the picture above, the Banabomination is none to happy to be toted around by Maxwell. You can also set up the characters powers (Banabomination shot bananas), vulnerabilities, and reactions to different elements.

There's a lot of sandbox fun mixed into the classic Scribblenauts puzzle-solving gameplay, with one smart amendment. Reusing a solution (like a jetpack or Superman) will reduce the rewards. This encourages smarter, more creative play. As a fan of the series, I'm excited to see more. Scribblenauts Unmasked will be out on September 24, 2013, on Wii U, 3DS, and PC.

  • I'm really looking forward to playing this. It's cool that they have crazy obscure people like that in the game, though I don't like the idea of the batcomputer. I think the fun of Scribblenauts is not knowing the limits of what you can make, and that computer defeats that for me. So I just won't use it.
  • Banabomination just made my day :)

  • Aw crap, this just reminds me that I haven't finished the last one.

  • So I can finally create zombie Batman? ;-)
  • My favorite superhero, turned into a banana..... AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i really hope Marvel can come up with a fun game like this

    SOOOOOOON

  • This game is going to be awesome! (O_O)

  • I can't wait to see Aquaman and Robin fused into Doomsday's body.

  • I've heard of this, is it any good?
  • I feel like Scribblenauts is starting to lose its imagination, kinda like how LEGO is almost completely licensed sets and games now.

  • Haven't played the first Scribblenauts yet, but this one looks promising. Don't know if the DC characters will be enough to make a whole game worthwhile, but we'll see.

  • *the night before launch*

    "Guys, we forgot Batman!"

  • I'm really looking forward to this! I love the Scribblenauts games.
