Original Starters Get Mega Evolutions In X & Y Trailer

In this morning's Nintendo Direct, Game Freak and the Pokémon Company revealed something special for long-time fans of the series. In addition to the starters for X and Y (Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie), Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur will be on hand.

More importantly, they'll be getting mega evolutions. We've got more on mega evolutions, our PAX 2013 experiences, and the upcoming Pokémon Bank online service. You can see more on the mega evolutions of the three original starters in the Nintendo Direct.

  • When I saw that you got to choose a starter from Kanto, in addition to the one in the start of the game, I kinda freaked out a little...
But now I'm torn because I'm totally going to choose Fennekin and I really want Charizard, but having two fire-types would be kinda stupid. I dunno if I want to pick another Kanto one or just not use Charmander after getting it.
  • YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *starts crying tears of joy* I can't wait to use Mega Charizard/Blastoise!
  • Mega Charizard and Mega Blastoise? Aren't those redundant since the two of them are already awesome normally? Venosaur, well, I rarely go with grass type myself, only time I did was for Sapphire since geckos are cool... say, will there be a mega version for that guy too?
  • Mod
But is the world ready for Mega Charizard? I fear for the future of mankind if such a power were to be discovere--

    Stealth Rock. KO
  • Clearly I'm buying two 3DS XL on the 27 and Restarting both games three times for all six starters
  • I think they shouldn't have made mega evolutions for the Kanto starters, they're already good enough as is lol (World implodes on itself)

  • To quote Megatron. "Yesssss."
  • Mega Blastoise XD

  • If they don't do all the starters like swampert then that will suck.
  • You can really see the art difference between the two starter sets.

  • GEN 1 STARTERS!!!!

  • Mega Blastoise and Mega Charizard look sick... Kinda mad, cause I totally wanted Fennikin, but Charizard looks so boss...Mega Blastoise it is, then. Does anyone here want Mega Venasaur? I've yet to find anyone who likes Venasaur over the other two.
  • I like this.

    Blastoise and charizard look amazing

  • This should be updated to make it more clear that you can choose one of the new starters AND one of the original starters at the beginning of X and Y.
  • Stop with this and give no evolution pokemon, some evolutions T^T

  • this threw off my whole plan. lol. I was going to get Fennekin, but can I really pass up a Mega Charizard? I don't need two fire starters. Throw Torchic into the mix, and it's REALLY messed up. lol. I may end up going with Torchic, Squirtle, and Chespin.
  • I get to replay with my original starters. I get Charizard again! I haven't played in years, but I am definitely getting this game now.

  • *facepalm* Okay. Granted, I am only a fan of the anime and first movie. The original Indigo League anime, at that. I haven't touched any of the Pokemon games. But to say that they are "bringing back" the original three starters... Have they ever stopped to think that maybe - just maybe - the Pokemon series has gotten completely out of hand? How many Pokemon are they up to now, anyway? See, this is why I basically walked away from anything new related to Pokemon after the disaster that was Pokemon 2000: too many options, getting more and more ridiculous with each one. I'll agree that some are cool, but the franchise just feels too big and bloated to really be enjoyable or respected anymore. "Bringing back" Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle and giving them new evolutions sounds more like throwing a bone to the masses. I was curious about some of the Pokemon games before, but now I definitely want nothing to do with the series. I'll stick with the 90's era 151 lineup. It's far less confusing, stream-lined, and warmer.
  • My reactions are seriously mixed with this. The old classic mini people in Pokemon games are long gone, new generations, more Pokemon names I can not remember, I have not played Pokemon since Soul Silver, but the Mega Evolutions did not look stupid... For the starters that is. Not even the shiny pokemons at GameStop made me want to buy Pokemon Black or White.
  • They gave Venusaur a hat. Yay.
