If you took Pikmin, crossed it with Patapon, and added a lot more dancing, you might end up somewhere near Orgarhythm.

You are a god who controls a group of Pikimin-like color-coded combatants. You and your soldiers dance in rhythm with the music along a pre-determined path on your way towards a boss character.

To command troops, you must tap through the menus in rhythm to select whom you want to attack, and then draw lines on the field to direct them. All of this is done with the touch screen. There are standard soldiers, archers, and two other classes whose strengths weren’t highlighted in my demo.

If you keep your rhythm going, you can level up adding more soldiers to your total. Tapping through the menus must be done in rhythm, but drawing the lines does not. The length of the lines you draw on the field, determines how many troops you send forward.

The game comes from the mind of Takashi Hirai, whose credits include work on games like Space Channel 5 and Rez, so he knows his way around rhythm and video games. It was easily one of the strangest and most intriguing games I had the opportunity to see during E3. It also looked difficult. The demo was on the casual difficulty, but it still looked like a lot of management all while making sure you can keep a beat.

This may only be important to me, but when it comes to hand-held rhythm games, I like to be able to pause. The original Patapon wouldn’t let you pause, which always drove me crazy. Orgarhythm does allow you to pause mid-battle.

There will be both local versus and cooperative modes, which will have players fighting one another as well as sharing a pool of soldiers to take on battles together.

Xseed is publishing Orgarhythm, but it’s still not sure if the game will be a retail release, or a downloadable title. In any case, you should be able to start dance-fighting enemies some time this summer.
