Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee New N' Tasty!

E3 Underdog – Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty

Considering their dated graphics and old-school gameplay, original PlayStation titles can sometimes be challenging to go back to. This is the problem with the classic platformer Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. However, Just Add Water’s new 3D update to the title looks like it could make the game more palatable for a modern audience.

The original Oddworld came out before the first Toy Story hit theaters, so a lot has changed in the world since that game released, and Just Add Water has been working to remake the game for downloadable platforms this summer.

Players take control of a Mudokon named Abe who was born into captivity and rises up against the big brother-like corporation that is corrupting the planet and Mudokon society. Abe can speak with his fellow workers, tell them to follow him or wait, and ultimately must lead them to safety. The game was praised for its puzzle-like platforming challenges and quirky charm back in the day and those elements remain strong in the remake.

I jumped into the remake, and immediately noticed some of the changes. The original game was built using bitmap images, but the new title is now reendered in 3D – make it technically 2.5D now. The title looks gorgeous. Thankfully, the game has been retuned to make it more forgiving for a modern audience. Checkpoints have been shortened to make it’s easier to progress through the story, and the platforming feels a lot more fluid and smooth.

If you haven’t played the original Oddworld, do yourself a favor and snatch up this great update when Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty comes to PS4 on July 22 and Xbox One, Wii U, and PC at a later undisclosed date.
