There is a lot to be enjoyed here the single player campaign alone is pretty lengthy, and their is plenty to keep you wanting to check out the next chapter each time you finish another. obviously the story is kind of flat like an open soda that’s been sitting on your coffee table for a few days but, lets be honest we don't look to NG for its award winning story line. the action is very smooth, and the controls feel really solid. the camera is still a bit of an annoyance. but seriously if you've been into this series since its re-imagined debut on the original XBOX, I'm pretty sure you've gotten over the bad camera angles. the gore aspect of NG Sigma 2 has been toned down considerably, most of the blood sprays and splatters on the walls and ground have been replaced with a purple kind of mist that is sprayed out of severed limbs. once you get through the first hour of gameplay though its not super noticeable the boss-fights are pretty intense and over the top, which is expected in this series, but most notably would be that are more bosses than NG 2 on the 360. starting with a large Hindu like statue crashing through the city for you to fight atop an oriental style building. the cinematic sequences are still very entertaining, as usual, the newly added motion control features are funny but totally not needed (you know what I'm talking about) if you don't know what I'm talking about just give the controller a shake when you see one of NG Sigma 2's many well endowed female characters.

once you beat the story mode there is still plenty of fun to be had. with the new team missions mode you are offered a ton of missions you can do along similar lines of resident evil 4 and 5's mercenaries. the cool thing about these is that you can either play them by yourself gearing up a computer player to fight along side you, or take it online and kill hundreds of monsters, bugs, demons, and evil looking ninjas with a buddy. Which to some one like me who didn't have Xbox live when the ninja master tournament was going on with Ninja Gaiden is pretty cool, I felt like I missed out big time not being able to go online and play NG with other people online. Well now you can. also fun about team missions is that you have to play the single player and find weapons and ninpo attacks in the game in order to unlock them in team missions, giving you an extra incentive to play it.

My main complaint about this game is that in addition to all the stuff they added in they took some things out that rather upset me. namely they absence of a karma rating or the over mission ranking at the end of a mission. There was also a small change made to the shop system. Now yellow lit shops only supply items, and now you have to find a blue lit shop to upgrade a weapon, and only one weapon can be upgraded at each shop and only by one level, removing a essence price point for weapon upgrades. and im not really sure what the crystal skulls do?

Blog Post: The Sum of All Ninja, the Redux?

I remember when i first played the NES game years ago. It is heralded as the first video game with in-game cinematics. I played through that game so many times (mostly because it was so hard) that the cinematics are burned into my mind along with the music. After playing all the sequels and various iterations of the series over the years, I never really got tired of it. These games have always offered a challenge beyond the normal scope of your standard action fare. Enter Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (NGS2), the most current installment of this legendary franchise.

While the first Sigma remake was a dramatic improvement from the first Ninja Gaiden, Sigma 2 is more about refining the small inconsistencies and tuning the game for another system while adding new features for PS3 owners. Some of the new additions include three new playable characters, upgraded 1080p resolution and textures, new story mode missions, Team Mission mode with online co-op, and Chapter Challenge mode. Stepping into the ring for the first time as a playable character in the series is the beautiful kunoichi Ayane, of Dead or Alive fame. Also making a return appearance is our favorite blonde bombshell of a demon huntress Rachel and the protege of Ryu himself, Momiji, of Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword fame. With addition of these three new ladies, the inclusion of an online co-op Team Mission mode is that much more fun. The lack of voice chat for Team Mission mode is unfortunate however.

With all all those additions, there were a few things taken out of this version as well. Enemy locations have changed and there are quite a few new bosses to tackle. There's even a few bosses and areas taken away from the previous version completely. I also noticed that limbs and other various body parts don't litter the ground anymore. The gore has been toned down quite a bit as well, as game is no longer the blood bath it once was. These things do very little to diminish the overall presentation of the game however. This is definitely the definitive Ninja Gaiden 2 experience.

Blog Post: Lady Ninjas Join This Wholesome Remake

Back in 1993, controversial arcade fighter Mortal Kombat released on home consoles. The SNES version replaced the gore with sweat, but was graphically superior to the bloody Sega Genesis port. Guess which one everybody liked? Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is the SNES version in this case, replacing spraying blood with blue smoke while adding co-op play, streamlining the gameplay, and introducing new chapters and characters. With all these great advances, why did Tecmo give bloodthirsty gamers an excuse to blow off this edition? It’s still rated M, so what’s really gained out of this decision? [Excerpt]

While the dried pools of blood may disappoint some, Sigma 2 features many gameplay improvements. The bow and arrow has unlimited ammo so you no longer have to collect arrows, plus the streamlined controls make shooting way more appealing. It’s nice not having to track down keys to open locked doors, and there’s a nice path indicator you can bring up if you get lost. While it stinks that you’re blocked from maxing your weapons completely until late in the game, at least you don’t have to spend orbs on them anymore (you just choose one per level).

Rachel, Momiji, and Ayane’s new chapters are a fun diversion from Ryu’s quest and offer a chance to experiment with different play styles and alternate bosses. It is slightly lame, however, that these environments are mostly backward versions of Ryu’s stages. The co-op mode is a large collection of plotless arena missions featuring waves of enemies and various boss compilations. Be sure to beat the main game before you delve into this mode or you won’t have any weapons or bonus characters. Unfortunately, team play is online only; otherwise you’re stuck with an AI bot.

Sigma 2 is a longer, more action-packed edition of Ninja Gaiden II, and if you’ve never played the original you won’t notice the missing gore.
