What's Happening

MLB 2k10 Definitive Review. Read.

After spendinga couple of seasons with this game I now realize  its very similiar to spring training. Those games are a lie, exactly how your first few in 2k10 are. Playing those couple of games you would think this title would alright, a much improved successor over last years 2k9. But then come the multitude of bugs & glitches.

Many a time I would slam a homerun over the fence just to have the camera centered on the ball, & it would stay there. The game would go on with the pitcher still pitching & the commentators still talking about my long ball, but for the life of me I could not get back to my players forcing me to completely start the game over. Sometimes the game would freeze for 30 seconds at a time when I stole a base, & also for some reason when you slide feetfirst into second you get up jumping off the bag even though sometimes the players glove is still resting on your thigh?

During dynasty mode I couldnt figure out how the progression system worked. Every year either my hitters would get better or my pitchers, never both though. & when one would get better the other would get worse no matter their performance the previous year, I could never quite figure out the logic behind this. You would also always get the short end of the stick during any trade, teams forcing you to give them great prospects from your farm system for only barely average players. The draft system requires you to only scroll through postions while looking at their potential best grade which takes no planning or strategy for it.

Another issue is the pickoff system which is completely broken.(Yes so bad that it deserves a paragraph for itself). No mater how big of a leadoff you have, whether the starting one or an extended one, you are at risk for an out. Sometimes yo can slide back with alienlike speed while the next time you slide you are remarkably sluggish seeming like youre stopping right in front of the base. It doesnt help that every pitchers pickoff throw is perfectly placed( exactly like every catchers throw is when you steal second. You have to rely on the pitcherrs windup for the success of your steal.)

ARE YALL STILL WITH ME?

The fielding & throwing has glaring issues as well. Reiner is exactly right when he says the AI does the fielding for you often just making you press the button to throw. Almost all of the outfielders have incredibly powerful arms, most of them are able to rocket the ball from deep center to home plate with an accurate no bouncer which is just not realistic. Also as far as I no the only way you can make an error is by throwing to the wrong base as your catch rating doesnt matter as long as your player wears a glove.

This sounds bad , but there are a few perks that completely save this game.

The battle between the pitcher and batter is a premium. The defensive swing  is amazing letting below par hiiters foul off corner pitches to wait for a heater down the middle(trust me, the pitchers AI can be faulty as these pitches will come often) or just look for the walk. Pitching is also fun  even if batters hardly ever swing at pitches that barely curl out of the zone(batters AI is vastly improved over the pitchers).

The other quality is My Player. Which allows you create & customize your own player choosing which position & which team you play for. You start out in AA ball moving up up to MLB as you progress your skills & your stats gradually improve. Improving your stats is fairly easy as it gives you skill points for running the opposing pitchers pitch count high to working a full count to catching a simple pop-up. Your season goals are very cool as they give you extra Skill Points for completing a set goal that you set at the beginning of the season, such as winning the triple crown or just hitting for a set number of home runs/rib's. The series goals are cool too giving you extra points for sweeping your opponent/slugging for a certaon %? or hitting set number of homers. Your main goal in this game mode is to make the Hall of Fame via career & team milestones. While a great concept of reaching there it is ultimately way too easy. I couldve made the Hall of Fame within 5 years of my rookie debut. All you really have to progress is your power & have a good eye for the ball & you will be hitting .538 for your % year career. Yes I told you it was easy.

While My Player & Pitcher vs. Batter are great new concepts for this title, Visual Concepts will have to upgrade the fielding & eliminate the bugs riddled throughout the game so that this game can stand up to the competion that its PS3 bretheren The Show puts out year after year.
