Konami surprised fans yesterday with an announcement trailer for Metar Gear: Survive, a four player co-op game that pits you and your teammates against biologically-infected zombies in an alternate universe. Attacking mindless zombies is a radically different direction for the series, and this is the first post-Kojima Metal Gear title from Konami since his departure. Unfortunately, Konami remains cagey with details, unable to provide much even as we pressed them during a presentation at Gamescom.

Set directly after the events of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes where Mother Base was destroyed, it was believed that the stranded MSF soldiers were left to die. However, according to Metal Gear: Survive, a handful of those men survived when an unexplained wormhole opened up in the sky, sucking them all in and transporting them to an alternate universe. Along with them, debris of the Mother Base was dragged through the portal too. The new setting, a sandy desert wasteland similar to the world of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, is where you and your team must fight these mindless beings in order to survive.

“The environment itself is treacherous, everything seems dangerous and trying to kill you,” says Konami brand manager Richard Jones. “Half-formed structures and components of Mother Base have been falling through these portals and are stuck here in the sand, and these places will act as shelter for you.”

Because Konami has so far been stingy with details, it’s unclear whether there will be classes, or whether any returning favorites from the franchise exist in this world. What we do know, is that while the announcement trailer focused on action, stealth will remain a significant mechanic. “You need to work together in co-op, as well as utilizing stealth mechanics, which pertain to the series, in order to survive. You work together, sneaking around enemies, making distractions.”

“You will also master new weaponry,” continues Jones. Unfortunately, Konami was unable to confirm what these weapons will be, but the trailer showed the team using an explosive, spinning bow and arrow, a shotgun, and a spear. Even for questions as simple as, "why zombies?" were left unanswered. Without any further information to give us a clearer picture on what to expect, Konami promised that more details will be divulged at a later date.

Metal Gear: Survive is set to release in 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
