Your First Look At Mass Effect 3's Multiplayer

Electronic Arts today unveiled screenshots and a short video interview for Mass Effect 3's cooperative mode "Galaxy at War," confirming reports from earlier this week.

The publisher also says the mode will be unlocked after entering a one-time use "Online Pass" code found in each new copy of the game. The code has been used in previous EA titles, including Mass Effect 2, which unlocked access to the Cerberus Network. The code can also be purchased separately, though a price point was not announced.

“The theme of galactic war in Mass Effect 3 presents us with the perfect opportunity to introduce multiplayer into the Mass Effect series,” said Casey Hudson, Executive Producer of the Mass Effect series. “Multiplayer not only features amazing combat and deep customization options, but it will give players another way to help the war effort against the Reapers in the main event -- the single player campaign.”

  • I'm not against the multiplayer. What I am against is that the mp has an affect on the singleplayer, even if its not mandatory. To me it just feels like this (Oh I f-ed up. Well, just let me jump into mp then and everything will be fine again.) I think they should leave the entire mp concept they have, just take out the part where it can affect the sp story, simply because it feels like a cheap way out. I believe that this is taking away from what made ME so great, the fact that your decisions and actions in the story had an affect on the outcome. Now I could just hop into mp and render those decisions invalid. That's just how it comes across to me.
  • AWESOME!!!!!

  • Still don't like it.  Goes against the spirit of the first two games.  Reeks of EA saying, "Yeah, we got this new online pass thing going so you're gonna have to have multiplayer in ME3."  Not going to stop me from buying the game though.  Gotta just roll with the punches.  Who knows, I'll give Bioware the benefit of the doubt.

  • I was concerned, but alright. you sold me.

  • This sounds pretty interesting. Multiplayer effecting the story in single player hmmm.... i like it! I am glad tho that you can still get the best possible ending from just playing single player as well. it worried me a bit when he said that the better you do in multiplayer the better your ending in single player will be.

  • Hmmm, not sure how I feel about this. I'm not sure if I understood it correctly but did he say to get the best ending in the game you are required to do the multiplayer? If that is the case I am a bit disappointed. Another thing that makes me question how much RPG elements this game is actually going to have, I really love ME1, played through it over 10 times over several different characters, but was disappointed with ME2 simply because of how it was more of an action game. In my opinion, simply having a lot of choice or outcomes in a game a RPG does not make. I really hope they make ME3 more like ME1 with the leveling, stat building, and equipment but with them adding things like multiplayer I feel they are just going to make the game even more action oriented rather than character building. I guess we will just have to wait and see.
  • Looks... More impressive than I thought.

  • We better be able to play as elcor

  • I had my doubts at first but they've got me really hopeful about this multiplayer now! Nothing sounds cooler than being an awesome Drell assassin! >:D

  • WOW it looks better then I expected I hope there is going to be a competitive mode too
  • Co-op is perfect for Mass Effect.

  • Looks awesome, made me even more excited for Mass Effect 3. On a side note, what the crap is Bioware Pulse.....
  • i guess im one of the only ones who doesnt think mass effect 2 was that great based on the comments. it seemed very short and was just go grab this guy do a mission to get them, rinse and repeat untill the final mission leg. wasnt very much fun for me
  • also why does my internet explorer have problems with loading the gameinformer site constantly? its the only site that has problems for me, ill sometimes have to reload it 5 times to get it to come up

  • I have a feeling the playing style will feel like GoW's multiplayer...
  • Er... cool, I guess.  Really hope they plan on improving the single-player combat.

  • I approve of this design decision wholeheartedly. On paper anyway... we'll see with hands on.

  • Excitement :)

  • I think Bioware can pull it off. Single player games are awesome, but multiplayer does things single player can't, like enjoy things with friends. I don't want every game to have deathmatch added on... but if each game has some multiplayer component, like Assassins creeds cat and mouse mp, and now this, I think it would be incredible. Especially if each games multiplayer is different for each game. And especially if it can optionally influence the single player game.
  • You know, I was skeptical about adding multiplayer to Mass Effect when I first heard about it, but this video really has allayed a lot of my fears. Tying it into the story is a brilliant move, and I'm glad that they're focusing on a co-op story-based mode rather than Call of Duty or Battlefield 3 style competitive modes because they just wouldn't mesh with what Mass Effect is. Good job, Bioware.
