It really makes you feel for the characters and feel as if you're playing in Shepard's shoes. While the combat isn't as evolved as Mass Effect 3, it is still a great game, and I'd definitely recommend getting the trilogy if you haven't played it.

Blog Post: A Big Pile of 'Meh'

Now, before you rabid Mass Effect fans who think that this series is the greatest to ever exist start mauling me, I should probably tell you that I like this game. It's just that there's nothing really special about it in my opinion. In this game, you take control of Commander Shepard as you try to save the galaxy. And there's our first problem. The entire overarching story is a generic 'save the universe by recruiting the best team possible'. Now, the story isn't bad at all. It's just 'meh'. I will say that the best part about this game are the characters. These chracters shine, no matter what kind they are, be it squad member, NPC, villain. And I especially loved being able to do loyalty missions for each member, and possibly pursuing a romantic relationship. That is cool. Also, I loved the whole morality choices with the Paragon and Renegade choices. Ahem, back to the 'meh'. The gameplay is just typical third-person shooter stuff. You've got different types of guns (which all felt basically the same to me), and you've got the cover system. Bioware tries to mix things up with the Biotic powers, but I almost never used them. At all. I just didn't need to. I have no idea if they become more useful on harder modes, but I was sorely disappointed. Now, let's talk about leveling. You acquire skill points (or squad points, can't remember which) as you level up. You can use these points to increase your abilities. If only you actually had a variety. Depending on which class you choose, Shepard has around 5-7. Every other main party member has like 3-4. So all in all, this game is 'meh' through and through. The characters and morality choices are where this game shine (and also kudos to Jennfier Hale as Fem Shep). Throw in some very tedious sidequests (like mining planets via probes), and what do you have? 'Meh'.

Blog Post: Science Fiction At Its Finest...

Mass Effect 2

"Science Fiction At Its Greatest"

Platforms:

PS3, Xbox 360, PC

Creator/Producer:

Bioware and EA

ESRB Rating:

Mature

Genre:

Third Person Science Fiction R.P.G.

It took me almost three years to decide if I was going to buy this game. Three. Im not really a fan of sci-fi stuff like Star Trek or Star Wars, but this game seemed... acceptable. So I took the opportunity to purchase this game for seven dollars, and I immediately played it when it got to me. Upon the first hour, I was a bit skeptical, I was like: Yes, the graphics are good, the controls are tight, the combats neat, but the science fiction element was just bugging me, but hey, I decided to give it chance. And you know what... Im god damn glad I took that chance.

Concept:

So take science fiction elements from movies like star trek and incorporate it into a game. But this game is nothing like Star Trek or Star Wars, sure, some of the main characters are aliens, but there is no crazy, weird stuff like light sabers, or time travel. Mass Effect is a game that feels science fiction, while not being too far fetched or over the top like Star Trek or Star Wars. There are no robots disguised as humans, there are no green alien furry guys name Yoda, there is no guy hidden behind a glossy plastic suit name Darth Vader, there is none of that stuff, just a few laser guns and alien people, which is as far as I can tolerate in a Science Fiction experience. But what Mass Effect does so great with these elements, is it makes them feel less nerdy and more epic. I can't see my self watching Star Wars and Star Trek and be like "Holy CRAP! This is the BEST THING EVER!!!!." No, but I did when playing Mass Effect.

Anyone who played the first Mass Effect (I have not) knows what to expect in this sequel, as far as the science fiction elements go. Even though I do not like the science fiction genre, I love what Mass Effect 2 has done with it. I have begun to not only tolerate it, I have begun to embrace it, I have become enamored with it, but it would be all for nothing if the story and characters sucked.

Score- 9

Controls:

Judging from some videos I have seen with Mass Effect 1, I made it final that Mass Effect 2 clearly has the superior controls. The action doesn't look or feel stiff like it did in the first game, its much more cinematic. Controls react well, and gun fights are the opposite of frustrating thanks to this. You can map specific powers or types of ammo to instantaneously use in combat, all without interrupting your combat performance, however melee is absent, I have seen it in play in Mass Effect 3, and it looks to work very well. But this is not a problem, because the combat and controls feel great, much better then what Iv'e seen in the first Mass Effect. Commanding your squad feels just as good. Its simple, and isn't confusing, it works perfectly.

The controls do need some work though, and it looks like Mass Effect 3 has improved them, but I will find out when I eventually get my hands on it. Overall, the controls work and feel great, it looks to be far better then the first Mass Effect. I don't think you will have any problem controlling this game.

Score- 9

Content:

Mass Effect is one of the more wealthy games on the market, as far as content goes. The main story is about 12-15 hours depending whether or not you focus on it and the difficulty you selected. For my first go around, I chose to play on Veteran difficulty. By the time I seen the credits roll my save has logged 18 and a half hours. But I completed a few side missions along the way, but the game is pretty lengthy. It took me three days to complete what I have done, and I still have more stuff to do. The game gives you a whole galaxy to explore, filled with many explorable solar systems and star clusters, it will take you hours to find everything. Within each explorable solar system, you will find a number of planets to discover. Most of them you can only mine for minerals and things of that to contribute to tecchnological and weapon upgrades. You will occasionally stumble on a planet with an anomaly, in which if you can locate its location, you can board the planet and complete a short side mission. This adds a feeling of discovery to the game, and may encourage you to embark upon exploration.

Every character you meet, usually has a personal mission for you to carry out, and all of them are interesting and are worth the time. There are also cities on certain planets that you can explore. These cities are all unique in their own way and offer amazing views. My only complaint with this, is that these cities are to small, so small in-fact, that they feel like markets. And also, when you are in these cities, open world is strictly limited. I would have like to drive in a flying car and explore every inch of these massive cities, but unfortunately, you can only explore a small market sized section of these cities. And there is many GTA like side activities to do also. I would have like to have scene Shepard play a competitive game of darts with Miranda, or Jacob, then throw high fives to each other after a game of bowling is done. These type of things could have added to the density of relationships you could have with characters, it would have felt more realistic. I do think Bioware could have done this, it would have made exploring cities much funner and even strengthen the experience, it would have been like, Grand Theft Auto in space.

But within in these cities, you can complete errands for some people, and buy things. I enjoy this part. You can not only buy weapon and armor upgrades, but personalization items such as magazines, and model toy ships. You can also but pets, like fish and space hamsters. Its quite fun to buy these type of things, then come back to your room on the Normandy and see these things displayed. I also heard, if you import your save, all the things you buy returns, so thats even cool. But the best thing about Mass Effect, is how many times you can play through it. I will definitely be playing it through once again before playing Mass Effect 3. All your choices and decisions have effects on how the rest of the game will play out, and how Mass Effect 3 will play out. I wasn't much lucky with my decisions, I managed to kill almost my entire crew at the end of the game. I will play through again, but this time make sure the same thing doesn't happen. And when I do eventually play through Mass Effect 3, Im going to play through it twice, once with my second play through (Im going to try and save as many people as I can) and maybe a second time with my first play through save.

Mass Effect 2 isn't an Elder Scrolls game in size, but it will keep you busy for hours and days, my first play through took almost 19 hours and I didn't even get a chance to do all the side missions, or even develop a complete relationship with Miranda as I originally intended to. If your a completionist, this game will keep you playing for a pretty long time.

Score- 9.35

Story:

The story is magnificent, and one of the most involving in gaming history. It requires you be a part of it, and every choice you make changes not only the rest of the game, but also it affects how Mass Effect 3 will play out. Every character also feels real, and attaches them self to you upon knowing them, Many of the characters in my play through died, and when each one did I felt bad, and even emotional for a few of my favorites. Mass Effect gives you control to set the destination of where you want the story to go, this is a power I am glad, and not glad to have. Knowing that your decisions change the game is enough to undergo phases of emotions, including sympathy, regret, paranoia, and sadness. I felt everyone of these emotions as I completed the game. Every step you take, you gotta be sure if thats the step you wanna take, and you got to think about what could happen later on. No other game where you have no control where you will go can match the power and emotions of what Mass Effect has provided us. Its your own movie.

All your actions and missions lead up to the final moments of the game. These final moments are so strong and so emotional, hardly any other experience can emulate it. The only time I have ever felt these types of emotions was in a really amazing movie, or a game like Uncharted. Mass Effect is one of the few games that make you care, and will either rip and strengthen your heart at the end. The ending is one of the most climactic and emotional I have ever experienced in any other form of media, and is indeed the high-light of the game. I have high hopes for Mass Effect 3, and it has a lot to over take. I just hope it does...

Score- 10

High Lights:

Simple enough, the whole game itself is a high light, everything from the gameplay, to the story. Every fight, from beginning to end is intense and thrilling. All characters are memorial, some more then others. And Commander Shepherd is one of the best lead characters for a game. I am sure you will remember this game for a very, very long time as I will to. But the true high light is the final mission. The final 30 minutes of the game demonstrates the greatest finale I have ever seen in gaming, full of emotion, amazing action and a score that is beautifully created. The ending was so good, without it, my rating for the game would have been lower, thats how good it is. It sets a bench mark for other game finales, and stands as the best ever created.

Score- 9.75

Realism:

Its a science fiction game!!! There is nothing real about this game, except for the emotions you will go through and the graphics look stunning. The AI sometimes can be stupid and careless, but most of the time, it posses an acceptable challenge. As unrealistic as this game may seem, it feels like your apart of it. What else is there to say?

Score- 9

Overall Experience:

It took me three years, but in the end, I wish I would have bought this game a long time ago, it is simply one of the best games I have ever played. The characters, the gameplay, the story, the amazing climactic ending, It will stay unforgettable for many years to come. Here, you have a game thats more then worth the price of admission, filled with deep choice making, intense combat, R.P.G. elements, and tens of hours worth of content. There are games that take you on great adventures, but this game takes you on an amazing odyssey across a whole galaxy. I will definitely be playing Mass Effect 3 soon, but for now, Im going to play through this game once more. Even if you aren't a sci-fi fan like me, get this game! Its a master piece of science fiction, an unforgettable experience that forces you to make your own decisions, its your own destination that you can either guide to success, or screw up and have to deal with your consequences.

Overall Rating:

9.5/10

Platinum

The Good Stuff:

Deep Involving and Amazing Story ++

Intense Thrilling Combat +

One Of The Best Endings A Game Can Have ++

Good Controls +

Wealthy In Content ++

Great Characters, Especially Shepard ++

Good Graphics +

Deep R.P.G. I could start with how the introduction completely hooks you in & ends with a bang. Or I could narrorate the epic scale & the grandeur of the universe for this series. I could also compare & contrast the vast differences of Mass Effect 1 & Mass Effect 2. But I think I'll start this game off by telling you how Freaking Awesome this game is. ( This game is freaking awesome.)

The galaxy needs Shepard to save their asses once more & he's more than capable to oblige, even crossing te boundaries of Death so to achieve his goal. As he's strapped back into his combat armor Shepard gets filled in on what's been going down in the universe while he's been away for an extended absence. A mysterious race of aliens dubbed The Collectors, has apparently been snatching up entire human colonies on the Outer Rim for an unknown reason & Shepard is coerced into stopping these dastardly douchebags with the aid of Cerberus. A pro human organization headed by the questionable Illusive Man.

Your not in Kansas anymore. This new installment has you traveling in the farthest reaching galaxies in known space. While you periodically visit the Citadel from time to time every other environment is brand new, allowing you to land on strange new worlds full of lush jungles, rocky canyons, toxic fumes, & scorching lava. Needless to say its pretty ***. Along with the new locales Bioware has added a fresh coat of paint making the graphics a very noticeable upgrade from their previous Mass Effect. Everything has a alluring shine to it & although there's a few circumstances of pop in pop out textures, it doesn't detract from the look of it as a whole. These updated visuals are some of the best in the gaming world & the character animations are amazing. Graphics aren't everything but they sure do help when it comes to a complete package.

Your proclained "Suicide Mission" means that you must gather some of the most rugged, baddest, meanest, grimiest, aliens throughout space right? Well, kind of. During your adventure you pick up a blunt Salarian scientist, a cloned Krogan war machine, & a deadly Drell assassin just to name a few. You also meet & add some of your old friends from the first game into your crew which OSS definitely nice so you can see what your old squad mates have been getting into while you've been away. (Garrus is one bad mofo') The voice acting for these characters old & new is top notch delivering the aggresiveness of a young Krogan & the well disciplined & knowledgable state of mind of an Asari death dealer. The in game sounds such as the popping of your guns to the wailing of crazed Husks is very appealing too & everything has that certain sci fyey sound to it. As it should.

A cool feature in this game is that if you have a completed saved game from the previous Mass Effect you can upload him/her into this RPG & it will remember the decisions you have made as well. This will allow you to see what the consequences of your choices were & what impact they had on the universe. Carrying your character over into ME2 really makes it feel as if you are carving your place throughout the games universe. Very cool Bioware. Very cool.

While it has the same title as its predecessor except for the big 2 stamped on behind it, don't come in expecting to play this just as you did Mass Effect. There have been not so subtle tweaks involving the gunplay & upgrade aspect. This new installment has been streamlined less as an RPG & more as a shooter now. The controls for cover & combat have been tweaked for more responsiveness & relatively easiness for kicking ass. That being said, some of the RPG elements have been completely stripped down to their barebones status. The upgrade & armor system of ME1 has been scrapped & now you must buy different perks per say, for your armor within stores except for you don't. One across many armor parts during your travels. The color of your armor though can now be chosen aboard your private terminal on your shop which is refreshing, so now you won't have to be saving the universe in hot pink & cloudy white color scheme.(THANK GOD) you no longer level up by killing enemies but by completing missions. This is quite different because no longer will you be a level 50-60 hardass taking on unknown perils. I believe I was level 27 when I finished my play through & that was with completing most of the missions. You also have less powers albeit they still rock. & your cool down timer this time around reflects on all of your abilities so no more using Pull & then following it up with a Throw right afterwards. While all of this may sound bad, it's not very noticeable later in the game & it feels more natural as you can hot key your powers to simple button presses.

Upgrading your guns & damage is where Mass Effect 2 kind of loses it's way. They force you to travel around to each planet & go into a awful & menial mini game of sorts to mine the worlds resources so you can upgrade your guns which is kinda weird to think about. Would Shepard actually suck a colonized planet completely dry from their natural resources just so he can receive a 15% increase in heavy weapon ammo? Bioware also adds in two more mini games of sorts called hacking & bypassing. Bypass forces you to match up a pair of nodes together while Hacking gives you 3 preset info clips & you must find their copies scattered throughout an ever moving endless number of different clips. While these aren't very hard, they are time consuming & become very annoying when all you want to do is proceed with the amazing story.

Sidemissions also take a major hit & the developers kinda dropped the ball with this one. In the previous game side missions were doled out everywhere you went. Random people would talk to you, you would hear the beginnings of one of you rode in an elevator, even Admiral Hackett, the leader of the Alliance Military would contact you for help. In this Mass Effect you must scour every planet in every galaxy to receive a 5-10 minute distraction that's supposed to pass as a side quest. It's pretty uninspired also seeing how it's a big waste of time cause you must also scan the planet hoping for a quest. There is one that stands out to me where you must walk atop the hull of a derelict human space craft thats teetering on the precipice of a cliff & has crash landed many years ago. Be too careless & the ship will tumble down to the ground along with you on it.

For everything wrong with sudemissions the main story arc & different personal quests that you're squad mates request you to go on are nothing short of awesome. You will have to infiltrate & bust out of a maximum security prison spaceship, battling a Thresher Maw on the Krogan home world of Tuchanka, & taking down 3 separate gangs & their respective crime bosses consecutively. Every one of these quests are varied & extremely fun. Never out staying their welcome. Every character gets fleshed out during these quests & you understand what makes them tick. It's very fulfilling. The main story is engaging & keeps you guessing on what's going to happen & when you finally get to the end you crave more. Let it be said though, it's possible for you & your team to die. Like actually croak & everything. No more Shepard. No more squad.

Mass Effect 2 starts off with a flying kick to the face & doesn't let off the throttle until the final credits roll. Bioware has improved upon the Mass Effect lore & it feels like a real universe is living inside this disc & it's your civic duty to save the universe once more. This is definitely a genre setter & other studios should get out their pencil & notepad & take some notes. You are invested in Shepard & actually care about what happens to Shepard & the gang. Bioware has crafted art & if not for the sudemission fiasco than this game would be a complete masterpiece. As of now though, This Game Is Freaking Awesome.

Wiki Page: Achievement List

When it came out, it was amazing. Incredible sci-fi adventure that will keep you coming back for more, and more, and more. Mass effect 2 is phenominal.

Graphics are pretty good. Seeing different types of aliens, worlds, and enviroments, it just looks great. Story is amazing. You decide final decisions that could be deadly to your team. Voice acting pretty good. Score is really good. Adds to the intensity. Campaign is amazing. It's a good 20-30 hours long. I sometimes compare mass effect and uncharted together. Both started off on a descent note, but followed up with amazingly, great, improved sequels.

Overall, Mass effect 2 is really good. Highly recommended. You really need this game. For sure for sci-fi or RPG, but if not either, still try it. It's amazing experience that won't disappoint. All the media hype and the high coming of the first one, I was ready for amazing story, gameplay, and music. I got the gameplay and music but not the story. I really started to pick up on the story issues when you start to do missions to gain your crew's loyalty. REALLY! They are riding this little space ship bandwagon already and I had to convice them to get on already! They are already loyal for pietes sakes! As for the gameplay, its gears of war except out with the chainsaws and in with the space magic. The music is as good as ever though. So there good sirs and ladies!

-Betamax

Blog Post: Wombat on the grill: Mass Effect 2 review( PS3 VERSION ) 9.75/10.00

THIS GAME IS MY FAVORITE RPG OF ALL TIME SO FAR!!! But, it could easily be a 10 and is a 10 if you've played the original. Don't wanna trust me? I GOT 100%, PLATINUM TROPHY, ALL ROMANCES, ALL ENDINGS, ALL CLASSES. IV'E DONE EVERYTHING THE GAME HAS TO OFFER. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU TRUST MY REVIEW!

Story: I won't tell you the story. Only the quality of the story. GREAT.

Graphics: Graphically, Uncharted only space graphics. Amazing.

Gameplay: You shoot, you drink, you DLC, you talk, you romance, you hack, you loot. You do everything. And it feels perfect.

Controls: This could be a downside. The controls can be difficult if you never played the original on 360. That's why it is a 9.75. However, if you have played it, it shouldn't be too hard to understand PS3 transfered controls and gets a 10.

Sound: A great cast and crew for the diolouge and music!

Overall: IF YOU READ WHAT I SAID ABOVE STORY YOU SHOULD GET THE PICTURE. 9.75-10

Blog Post: Star Wars in a galaxy not so far away

Simply put this game right here is the Star Wars of VG. It may not have lightsabers but it sure has one heck of a narrative storyline. As for graphics the game looks incredible, though ive seen more realism in other recent games, but its still very gorgeous. The combat system works well both as a shooter and an RPG. Simply put, if you dont have this game in youre collection you are simply missing out on one of the greatest series of this generation period.

Forum Post: Re: Wishlist for Mass Effect 3 (Might contain Spoilers)

well Bioware has heard your prayers!! they say they will be adding in a lot of new RGP elements back in! hopefully to depth of ME1 :D

Wiki Page: How To Pwn The Final Boss (Spoilers)

You'll need a weapon like the Cain, along with squadmates who are well-outfitted with their respective upgrades. My choice of weapon for Shepard is the Widow Sniper Rifle, easily the most effective and most powerful weapon players can use short of a heavy weapon. The Viper Rifle is less powerful, but useful if it is fully upgraded as well. For other classes, if you have not downloaded the Mattock, Geth plasma shotgun, or the Locust (Kasumi's Stolen Memory) then do so, as these are great alternative weapons to use for other classes.

As always, the terminator-esque Human Reaper usually begins by firing a large burst of energy from its chest, so you'll want to find some cover, preferably in front of you. Note that after a while, the Human Reaper will change its position, but if you keep your distance and maintain cover, you should be safe. Getting hit by the Reaper's chest beam instantly depletes your shield and causes a delay in recovery, so be cautious. Note that it also increases the wait for your shield regeneration substantially.

Equip your weapon of choice. While keeping yourself shielded, just aim at either the Human Reaper's eyes while it's charging up its attack. For a long-range shotgun like the Geth plasma cannon, charge it up and shoot at the chest. Eventually, you'll get's health down to three-fourths after a couple turns, depending on your weapon and character upgrades.

With this damage, if timed correctly, the Reaper will usually unveil its tail attack and accidentally destroy whatever platform Harbinger is on.

With your Cain heavy weapon, wait until you get to just under half of the Reaper's health, then use it, aiming for its chest or eyes. The astonishingly powerful weapon should end your battle in no time. Presto! You've beaten the game. Now sit back and enjoy the wild ride.

Most useful powers: Field Throw, Unstable Warp, Incinerate, Concussion Blast, Tactical Cloak, Warp Ammo, Shredder Ammo

Wiki Page: Key tips and tricks to surviving Insanity: Special Combat edition (Spoilers)

Combat

1) Take cover. Got it? This is Insanity, and your enemies have ridiculously accurate aim. You're Shepard, not Rambo. You died once, and you can die again.

2) Always have atleast one character with the Warp ability or Overload in your party. Everything comes equipped with shields in Insanity, even Varren, and one of the fundamental rules of surviving this mode requires that you to be able to weaken them quickly.

3) Always make sure you place your characters in secure locations in tight firefights. Y'know, so they don't go running off into the middle of a firefight and die (hmm, Kasumi, Tali, or Jacob, anyone?).

4) If quantity doesn't always equal quality, the reverse can also be true. Heavy weapons like the Arc Projector, Avalanche, and that wonderful Flamethrower are worth their weight in credits. The Arc Projector can do considerable damage to large groups of enemies; the Avalanche is useful for freezing them - once their shields have been destroyed, of course - and the Flamethrower is awesome for enemies that like to get too close, vis a vis Husks, Abominations, soldiers, mechs, and Varren. The Cain is also great, but it's a meh when you're not fighting tough bosses, especially seeing you have to have atleast 100% ammo to use it.

5) In high-powered action movies, is the explosive tank of gas ever sitting next to an enemy just for show? Take advantage of your environment in battle.

6) Sun Tzu once said that the enemy with the high-ground always has the advantage. Not in this game, when you can curve biotic abilities to tear them to shreds. Or sniper rifles...

7) The one-two punch: destroy a husk's shields with Heavy Warp - or just whittle it down to its health - and then use Incinerate to instantly kill it.

8)Don't use Unity too often when both squadmates die in your party: this will automatically use up two of your medkits instead of one. Instead, pick off your enemies with your best weaponry. Your characters will revive themselves once you've picked off all the enemies. If you absolutely must, then use Unity once you've killed enemies around them. But otherwise, exempting battles with enemies that like to flank, don't waste your time, as you can and probably will survive by yourself in most cases.

9) When using SMG's and Assault Rifles, fire in short, controlled bursts to minimize missed shots.

10) Evolve atleast one ammo ability so that it can be used by the entire squad. While it may seem tempting to have that +60% damage for one character, three people with special ammo and +40% damage is certainly much more devastating. In this case, less is more. Especially Warp ammo, easily my favorite of the ammo abilities as it uses biotic power to damage shields and both synthetic and organics equally.

Here's the cous de gras: when choosing your special ability, I recommend one that either optimizes your defense (Fortification, Shield Boost, Barrier, Cloak) or your offense (an ammo ability or a grenade ability) based on your class. It's best to use Fortification for a Soldier class since they don't have any good defensive abilities.

11) For squadmates like Jacob who die frequently, evolve their passive abilities first.
