The lights are on
Mass Effect 2 is one of the best games of this generation to simply put it. It improves on an already impressive Mass Effect and delivers one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had.
The story mode itself is a big change from its predecessors. There is much more interaction with your squadmates and it seems the story is on a much smaller scale than the first one. What I mean by this is that the suicide mission didn't give me that adrenaline rush that the whole story of Mass Effect gave me (excluding the beginning). It has its moments with some witty dialogue, fun side quests, and great characters but the main suicide mission to me doesn't have that wow factor the first one had.
Although the story is weaker than the first, the characters are much more appealing and exciting. Your crew features some of the greatest characters in gaming history and diving into their personal stories is a blast. Overall the story is good but is overshadowed by the excellent character development and side missions.
The game's visuals are simply stunning. Aside from the rare hiccup in the graphics it showcases some of the best graphics this console generation. The animations are excellent and everyone acts and moves like a normal person. The settings are diverse and much more vibrant and exciting than the originals. The maps change from cities to jungles to spaceships to pretty much anything. Nothing really to complain about as the atmosphere and graphics are one of Mass Effect 2's strong points.
Like the atmosphere, the sound is greatly improved over the original. Although both Femshep and Maleshep give wooden performances, the supporting cast gives excellent performances that liven up the world. From a looney-biotic volus to Conrad Vernon there are some excellent voice acting performances that match with the characters. The sci-fi soundtrack is also great and made me have some of those songs be stuck in my mind from time to time. From the more ochestra, space odyssey music to the techno/club music the soundtrack does not dissapoint.
Although the overall gameplay mechanics are improved, there are still some glaring issues seen. The shooting has been improved, the cover mechanics have been fine tuned and the mako sections being removed make Mass Effect 2's gameplay much better. However the seemingly recycled battlefields grow tiresome, repititive, and simply predictable. When I'd approach an area with glaring and unnatural cover positions I knew there was a firefight coming. Same with the gameplay, it always felt the same nothing unique in the battlefield occured. Another glaring problem was the mining sections. These were necessary to have all your crew survive and simply put were just plain awful. While the gameplay in Mass Effect 2 is solid, it isn't one of the strongest parts of the game.
Mass Effect 2 offers so many pathways for your Shepard that you will want to keep coming back in the universe. With six unique class types, I highly recommend at least playing it twice mixing up your styles because you won't be dissapointed. The expansive world, side quests, long story all warrant you to keep visiting the Mass Effect universe. Match that with the original Mass Effect history impacting your game makes this an excellent game to keep playing again and again. Plus the DLC (especially Lair of the Shadow Broker and Alliance) offer excellent story and gameplay and will help you segue into Mass Effect 3.
