Switch Lights

The lights are on

One of the Greatest Series of This Generation

I'll say it right now: I love Mass Effect. The world, characters and lore all come together in such a way that I was never bored with the story, and always totally engrossed. I felt that now was the time to write this review because of the flood of info on Mass Effect 3, so here goes.

Mass Effect 2 is currently my number 2 game of all time (#1 would have to be Wind Waker). It is not a perfect game, but very close to that. Almost everything about this game shines in some way or another, but what stands out to me the most is the writing. With ME2, Bioware has brilliantly created a compelling aura of player choice and and a system of consequence and compelling reward for each action. No matter what path you take, the game remains as fun and enjoyable as ever.

One of the coolest parts of ME2 is the import feature. Having my actions in in the first game carry over to the second is something that has never happened to me before, and it  is still awesome.

Now onto combat. While not shockingly original, ME2 has some stellar moments beneath its chest high walls. While cover based shooting and I have never really seen eye-to-eye, this game manages to keep my interest with a vast array of powers, weapons, upgrades, locales, and enemies. There are no two same moments, and it shows.

Quickly, I'll talk about the worst part of the game: the minigames. While not bad in any way, that just seem unfit for a game of this caliber. And the mineral scanning? Don't even get me started.

Next, the graphics. Mass Effect 2, while not setting new standards in terms of graphical capabilities, looks fantastic in its own right. Detailed characters, textures, and lighting all come together to make something very much not Unreal brown.

Finally, the sound design. Every gunshot, explosion, song, and word uttered sound awesome. This is a great sounding game, and by no means a quiet one.

In conclusion, Mass Effect 2 is a stellar game and my only hope is that Bioware makes Mass Effect 3 just as good.
