Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

New Lightning Returns Developer Diary Covers The Music, Art, And Monorails

The newest developer diary covers a lot of ground for the third Final Fantasy XIII title, including Tetsuya Nomura's art, the environments, the music, and more.

You'll hear from all aspects of development from the artists and musicians to the designers. The team talks about long time Final Fantasy artist Tetsuya Nomura's work for the game, how the environments interlock with one another with monorails, and the focus for the game, which according to this video, "has been to make Lightning more beautiful and cooler looking than ever before."

To see the first episode of the Inside the Square series of videos covering the development of Lightning Returns, head here. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is coming to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 11.

  • [and the focus for the game, which according to this video, "has been to make Lightning more beautiful and cooler looking than ever before."] We get it Square, seriously!
  • I was honestly kinda looking forward to this but ever since I saw a video of one of the developers sorta perving on Lightning I realize this is just gonna be fanfiction: the videogame.
  • Can't wait! Already have it preordered :)
  • God quit posting about this, No one cares any about final fantasy 13. KILL IT ALREADY. I think this is the 4th post about new clothing for lightning. Stop posting it!
  • i played the Japanese demo and i gotta say that the battle system is pretty good, but i won't buy it cause i miss the old final fantasy system where you gather party members and stuff, reason why i love FFXIII but i dislike XIII-2 and well i won't like this game either.

  • I am interested to see which direction this game takes. Final Hallway XIII was a major let down, and I wasn't too impressed with the second one, either.
  • I do have mixed feeling on the direction of the Final Fantasy series is going but I still am going to give this game a chance.

  • And Bimbobalina makes her unwanted appearance.......

  • "Our highest priority was to make Lighting more beautiful and cooler looking than ever"

    I bet it was

  • Sooo, uhhh...when's ffxv coming out, again?

  • Say hello to the Square Enix B-Team. It's really too bad that their top talent has been locked into seven plus years of fruitless development. Meanwhile the only other people of worth make up the consistently underutilized Tactics team, most of whom are now involved with FFXIV ARR. There could be some great games in Square-Enix's future, but this likely wont be one of them.

  • Very Good interest Final Fantasy XIII only Square Enix very much work for digital art and make shape much ideas create land and monster interest.

  • Sorry, but I feel that Final Fantasy has truly lost it's way. Where's the engaging storyline, the new locales and worlds to explore, finding hidden items, npcs, easter eggs and story bits? Where are the interesting characters & caricatures of personalities that grow on us, or grab us from the start? You can toss this as "talking about past experiences" But a large majority of older Final Fantasy games hit the right notes, making those titles classics. Now it's recycling the same character/world for the third time, with the game's huge focus on changing appearances. FFXIII had a huge opportunity and while it missed the mark, it still had some semi-redeemable parts, then instead of starting from scratch with a new world, story, char etc etc. they decide that this game is the one to put all their aces into? I remember when the name Square commanded a universal praise in gaming, now it's just....there.
  • wow. that was cool

  • Did i see a Cat costume? Hehe, Japan

  • So much focus on outfits, and a lot of them just look so impractical for the personality they are trying to give her it seems.  I don't see this "cool, strong, badass heroine" wearing barmaid's outfits or cat costumes (although I am not surprised by a cat costume and the link it has to FFXIV).  I don't even want to know what that orange feathery outfit they flashed was supposed to give her for abilities.

I wasn't a huge fan of FFXIII or the more action heavy focus they brought the series (little to no exploration in the first 11 chapters, limited party options, no shops etc) but I appreciated the detail to the characters and I did enjoy the battle system once I got used to it.  Unfortunately the story fell flat for me and didn't intrigue me enough to continue with XIII-2 and I don't think I will miss not playing this title.

  • Yep, it's another promotional video about Lightning's costumes.

  • Sooner or later, are we gonna get GI Joe Lightning?. . . XD
