Lego Marvel Avengers
Warner and TT Games have been on a tear lately, hyping up the recently released Lego Jurassic World and Lego Dimensions. Oddly enough, a third project hasn't had much time in the spotlight – a project based on a billion-dollar film franchise.
Lego Marvel's Avengers is based on the first two films, where New York City is attacked by the nefarious chitauri warriors. I didn't get to see anything from Age of Ultron, but I did help thwart the alien creatures' invasion.
We start out with the invasion under way. Civilians are pinned beneath wreckage, and Captain America, Hawkeye, and Black Widow have to rescue them by destroying wrecked cars and other debris, some of which is guarded by chitauri goons. The characters are largely the same as in Lego Marvel Super Heroes, though there are subtle differences. Cap can not only walk through flames, but he can now extinguish them with a mighty leap and a flame-smothering shield smash.
Characters can also team up for special combo attacks.These are context-sensitive, meaning you can't pull them off at a whim. Instead, you stand on a marked area and wait for your teammate (or A.I. buddy) to walk over and press a button. Then they perform a maneuver, which changes depending on the duo. Captain America uses his shield as a platform for Black Widow, and she bounces into the air and sprays bullets down at the apex of her jump. Thor rings Cap's shield like a bell, destroying objects and enemies nearby. The coolest one I saw had Cap reflect Iron Man's energy attack to destroy airborne chitauri.
TT Games says there are more than 100 all-new characters in the game, as well as an all-new New York City hub. Players spent a lot of time goofing around in that area, a Lego rep says, so they're working to ensure that it's got even more activities to keep players busy.
I only played through one level, but I'm eager to see more. I'm a fan of the Lego games, and I'm looking forward to seeing how TT Games adapts the films. I like the Avengers movies, but I'm not exactly a crazed superfan. I'm hoping there are other stories to play through at some capacity, similar to the oddball Deadpool levels from Lego Marvel Super Heroes. We'll learn more before the game ships later this year.
