What's Happening

Outstanding!

As a huge fan of Flower I knew I was going to be in for a treat when I purchased this game.  However, a treat is a bit of an understatement.  I will explain how my experience developed aside from giving away the marvelous ending.  I would like to point out that even though I will be avoiding any major spoilers and there is no dialogue in the game it should be heavily recommended that you play the game before reading anything.  An enormous part of this game is discovering the world with a fresh mindset.   Onward...

Upon starting the "Journey" you are given absolutely no clue as what you need to be accomplishing.   So I pressed on through the sand as my awkward little guy dressed in a heavy cloak slid down the hills and crevices scattered throughout this desolate land you are presented with.

I started pressing buttons on the controller in simple curiosity looking mainly for a jump or run button.   At first I did not find such a thing which made me worry if I was going to need to transverse the entire land by slowly walking all the way.   My worry subsided as I found material that got me up in the air higher than I had anticipated.   As I fumbled with gliding around, not due to poor controls but due to my lack of understanding the feature at this point, I noticed another cloak wearing person off in the distance.

Sitting back and watching him using the beacon call (by pressing a button you emit a short glow around your character and even a larger glow when holding the button down) to climb effortlessly around the environment, jumping from one swaying material branch to another, I eventually got the hang of it.

After a short while of figuring out what seemed to be working in the environment I then began to advance swiftly through to the next location of the game.   Around this time another player greeted me and jumped around me in a playful fashion.  This was to be my companion for the rest of the game.  We figured out the puzzles together, we got turned around at one point, and anytime one of us fell behind the other waited patiently to catch up.

It was an enlightening experience as I believe we both started to understand what the game was really about.   With no way to communicate and no way to see the other person's name it was a strange in yet powerful feeling as the game came to a close and we both witnessed the fantastic ending.

The credits began to roll and all I was left with was a series of thoughts on what had just happened.   A short game that overall was finished in about an hours time, I was more moved by it than any other game in recent history.   I will be going back to play this time and time again not only for myself, but to also try and give other players a similarly unique experience as I had throughout their own Journey.
