An Exciting Elseworld

This is definitely a game for fans of both the Mortal Kombat series and DC Comics. It's got plenty of things for both kinds of fans to love. The combat itself is very reminiscent of Netherealm Studios last game, Mortal Kombat for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The combat is very tight and bombastic as you'd expect a game from this studio to be, but its also strategic. Although you do have characters whose moves you can spam to almost incapacitate them with ease, to the frustration of the one on the receiving end. But that's just how fighting games are when you go against people who've studied the characters and figured out the best ways to utilize a character's strengths to their advantage. The online coding seems to be very well done, I've had no issues with it thus far. The character designs are very well done and fit with the personalities and general ideas of each one's designs over the years in comics, television and movies.

The story mode was very well put together and has a few surprises along the way. Its not a very gore heavy game, which fits the general idea of the DC universe. Although at times the comics can come across as just as grotesque as a Mortal Kombat game in the gore and dismemberment department. But here, they went for the T rating and it pays in dividends. Aside from a few bits of vulgar language sprinkled here and there (I'm looking at you Green Arrow), its very much kid friendly. It's a story of good versus evil, but not in the way you'd think. Its more about the evils of fear and loss against the good of hope and friendship. Its something very adult that kids and young adults can enjoy, but at the same time its something that can bring the kid out of the older audience. While I do find the aspect of the wager system kind of weak and cheap in some ways, its one of the minor things that tend to pop up in any game. Definitely not a deal breaker here. The music is grandiose and energetic. The environments are beautiful to look at and even more fun to destroy.

This is a must buy for any fighting enthusiast. The story mode is intriguing and gratifying, if a little predictable or contrived at times. The S.T.A.R. Labs missions are entertaining and allow for some unique gameplay that isn't normally encountered in the game proper. The unlockables, both those that you earn and buy with in-game currency that you get during gameplay, are varied and fun. Some of the gripes aside I can really appreciate the game as a fan of both series, but mainly as a fan of superheroes. Its something we were promised with Mortal Kombat v.s. DC Universe back in 2008. With the conflicting aspects of Mortal Kombat removed and everything being focused on DC lore, it really shines. I can't recommend this one enough. Go out and buy it when you can. You won't be sorry.
