The lights are on
inFAMOUS 2 does a lot of things right and is a mainstay in the open world genre. GTA is in a league of its own so the only real major competitor to inFAMOUS is Assassins Creed. Sure there are games like Sleeping Dogs but most likely won't advance the genre like inFAMOUS, GTA, or AC. Comparing inFAMOUS and Assassin's Creed is an interesting thing to do but the games have their pros and cons. inFAMOUS simply has better gameplay, much better gameplay even. It's smoother, the parkour is the best in the genre and Cole makes you feel like a superhero. Them again playing as Connor or Ezio makes you feel like in Assassin but a superhero game hadn't been done successfully and thats what inFAMOUS does so well.
One design from Sucker Punch really interested me. Cole Magrath goes from being invincible to near dead a little too quickly for me. This most likely was a design flaw but it seems to fit Cole Magrath and inFAMOUS 2's story. There is no middle ground. Cole is either flying high terrorizing Militia parades with Nix or lying in a sewer near-dead with his one hope of victory gone.
A big part of open-world games is obviously the world. New Marais is a beautifully animated city with easter eggs littered throughout. Some of these are awesome, a movie theater with movies based on games playing like Assassins Need Love(too), Uncharted Territory, Hey Lo! Reach; but some are just bad, a Subway is in New Marais. Sigh. This small part of the game mirrors a much larger part. New Marais just feels empty at times. A star rating of some sorts-GTA esque- should have been included. You can kill three cops or a group of Militia and thats it. This is one problem the Assassin's Creed games don' t have. Frankly its because of the difference in size of teams. Ubisoft literally has hundreds of people working on Assassins Creed games while Sucker Punch has maybe one hundred.
Next up is the story. inFAMOUS 2's story is amazing, both of them. The good story and the evil story are both amazing and tragic, but I preferred the evil ending. The thing is when I played the evil story, I felt like a jerk. This is amazing on Sucker Punch's part to get this feeling across. One discussion between Kuo and Zeke stuck with me. On the first mission of the game you have the choice to get rid of a militia camp at he cost of the women and children living there. After choosing the evil choice Zeke tells Kuo that things tend to blow up a lot around Cole and that she would get used to it. I haven't played the first inFAMOUS yet but this still made me feel like a Dick. With the ending it feels like the evil ending has more resolution and a bigger emotional impact. Both are beautifully tragic though.
inFAMOUS 2 is one the best 10 games currently on the PS3. It stands up there with Littlebig Planet, Uncharted, and God of War and surpasses all of the, in certain areas. One thing I didn't mention was the User Generated Content, its difficult to use and the reward is not as high as Littlebig Planet. Stick to them for UGC. inFAMOUS 2 is must buy for any gamer.
