Friendly Fire Will Probably Ruin Friendships

At first glance, Helldivers might look like your average twin-stick shooter. Arrowhead is changing up the formula a bit thanks to four-player co-op and friendly fire that can’t be turned off. Yes, you are probably going to accidentally kill your friends.

As you might recall from our Test Chamber, Helldivers is an extremely difficult game. Unlike most twin shooters, which value laying down as much fire and causing as much havoc as possible, Arrowhead Studios is pushing players toward strategy.

You’ll definitely want to lay down heavy fire on enemies, but doing so in a coordinated fashion will win the day (and keep your teammates from catching a stray bullet). You’ll also want to coordinate loadouts and tactics to ensure you’re prepared for the battle ahead.

Environments and missions are procedurally generated, so each time dropping into combat will be different. The title will be launching on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and Vita this summer, and Arrowhead has managed to get cross-play working across all three platforms (including any combination of local and multiplayer teammates).

You can check out some new screenshots below. For more, you can read a preview from 2013.
