Halo 4

Halo 4 Details From The Microsoft Spring Showcase

Outside of a holiday 2012 release date and a brief E3 trailer last year, news on the Halo 4 front has been scarce. At Microsoft’s Spring Showcase event in San Francisco last week, many attendees were hoping for substantial information regarding Master Chief’s next adventure (and first to be developed by 343 Industries). We did receive some new information about the game, but the bulk of Halo 4 is still a mystery.

The 20-minute briefing began with a video that featured executive producer Kiki Wolfkill and 343’s Frank O’Connor talking up the importance of Halo 4 (you can watch the video below this article). They stressed that character development would be a key focus of the next entry in the series, and that fans will learn much more about Master Chief. Halo’s protagonist will be facing a new threat “unlike anything he’s seen before,” and O’Connor told me that this threat will make a significant impact on both the narrative and the gameplay. As anyone who played the first game knows, the appearance of a new enemy (the Flood) can drastically change the experience.

Spartan IVs will be introduced in this sequel, and they’re (as expected) bigger, faster, and stronger than the Spartans we’ve seen in Halo’s past. Cortana is also set to play a pivotal role in the game, but Wolfkill and O’Connor didn’t elaborate on her status.

O’Connor spoke about how the campaign and multiplayer felt like they existed in separate worlds in previous games, and the team wants to change that. They want both modes to feel like they’re part of the same universe, and there will even be an explanation in the story that illustrates why red Spartans fight blue Spartans in multiplayer. Here’s hoping it makes sense in the narrative, as it could certainly seem forced otherwise.

I wasn't shown any footage from the campaign, but they did show two very brief walkthroughs of multiplayer maps. Warhouse is an abandoned military manufacturing facility that features plenty of verticality as well as a large Cyclops II mech in the center. Previous features like grav lifts and man cannons were displayed in this map. The second area was Wraparound, a Forerunner facility that serves to create an artificial sun. As such, the sky is extremely bright, reflecting off the sleek floors and walls of the environment.

Halo: Reach allowed players to customize what their Spartan looked like on the battlefield, but Halo 4 promises to have custom armor pieces that serve more than an aesthetic purpose. O'Connor and Wolfkill wouldn't elaborate on the functionality of this system, but they did say it would be deeper than the loadouts of Reach.

It's nice to get any info at all about the upcoming FPS blockbuster, but the Spring Showcase didn't bring us any significant answers regarding storyline, multiplayer direction, or release date. We may not know much as of now, but O'Connor ended the presentation by teasing the announcement of a "big ticket item" later this year. We'll be sure to report back once we hear more about Halo 4.

  • Mass Effect and Halo having new entries this year makes me a happy camper!
  • Isn't Halo dead and gone? This genre is getting a little old.
  • YES OH YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES dudududUUUUUUUUUUN dududuDUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN duuuuu durururu DUUUUU dururuu DuruuUUUUU duRUUUURUUUUUU
  • Thie PIc avbove is gonna be my new Desktop

  • YES!!!!!

  • SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!
  • *** YES!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • You know what they could do that would help multiplayer more? GET RID OF THE LAG, geeeeeeze. Get dedicated servers so XBL play will be more closer to a land party. Having one person in god mode every game isn't very fun, especially when it's you and you realize you are winning because you have such a big advantage against everyone else.

...ok I take it back, that last part is a little fun XD But it is terrible in terms of fair play and balance.
  • Everything I just saw in that trailer looked amazing. I'm by no means much of a Halo guy (played through 3's campaign, had a little go with the multiplayer, that's all), so I don't know how all this sounds to a franchise vet, but it all looks good to me.

  • Good to see Halo finally getting the revamp it needs. Reach nudged the series forward in the right direction, but didn't quite give it all the push it needed in the single-player arena. I've always felt Halo is overrated, but I've still always enjoyed the series' multiplayer. It would be nice if I could finally put a Halo release as one of my favorite games for a year.
  • I support the necessary changes to the series, so it can continue to grow, but I hope 343 isn't going to go overboard. It seems to me like they might be trying to change too much, too quickly.

I think that the campaign and multiplayer should feel and stay separate, not including co-op, of course. Bringing them together and adding an irrelevant story as to why Red/Blue are fighting, just seems like too much of a stretch. Leave that to Rooster Teeth. I still have faith that 343i will do the series justice, but they need to make changes in moderation, or by the time we get to the end of this new trilogy, it won't have the same feel that made Halo, Halo.

Also, I just have to add that the MC will still be the best, most awesome Spartan alive, regardless if the next generation has been created, lol. No Spartan IV can change that.
  • I am impressed! Really looking forward to seeing more!

  • Ok. Im excited now. Or at least the game has been put back on my radar.
  • halo to me was always just barebones. it really didn't have any huge change to it following halo 2. yes this and that was added, but alot of ground breaking fps's have been out that bring something new to the table. i'm glad that the new team is taking this seriously, and looking into expanding on halo rather than just following behind bungie. truth be told i'm glad bungie isn't doing it anymore.
  • Cool news and video clip but what is with Master Chiefs left hand on the header pic?
  • Great video. Love getting new information on the upcoming Halo 4. It looks like 343 is really working hard to make this game right and live up to the Halo franchise. I can't wait to hear more as time progresses!

  • I don't know I'm still worried it's going to flop without Bungie at the helm.
  • So far this game just looks like a graphical upgrade to Halo 3. It seems like their bringing all the original weapons back and gameplay. Don't get me wrong, I love the mechanics of Halo 3, but if 343i can add their own special touch to it then that is what will make this game great. Very excited for this game, I hope the release date doesn't get pushed back, because I won't be able to play it in the spring :( Also, don't add a story as to why blue Spartans fight the red... that just seems irrelevant.
  • I'm curious why they think they need to explain why red and blue Spartans are fighting, they'll probably just say they're training exercises.

And does the idea of custom functioning armor worry anyone else? I was worried about Armor Abilities in Reach too, and that turned out fine, but if it does things like increasing shield/armor strength or something similar, I fear it could hurt balancing.

EDIT: Also, looks like bloom is gone, at least for the BR.
  • thank god the cheif is back and not some wash up story like halo reach or odst
