Positech Games announced today that Gratuitous Space Battles 2 has entered open beta. The game promises to carry on the streamlined strategy nature of its predecessor, which sold over 100,000 units.

The Gratuitous Space Battles series places a heavy emphasis on plotting out your attack before launching, as once your orders are set in motion you have no control of the ships. The battles you see take place near the end of the conflict, testing your ability to design ships effectively and give strategic orders.

The original Gratuitous Space Battles placed an emphasis on removing the base building and resource-based delays from other strategy games, simplifying the process to constructing your ships, placing them in fleets, and sending them to battle. Gratuitous Space Battles 2 adds several features to that formula including a new visual ship-editor that ensures unique creations each time, more ship classes to choose from, and a new graphics engine. Gratuitous Space Battles 2 is also more friendly to modders, offering more editable text and CSV files.

Positech Games hasn't yet announced a launch date for Gratuitous Space Battles 2. Those who purchase the open beta now will receive a Steam key for the full game when it releases.
