There are some game trailers that just stick in your mind. For the Xbox 360, none carries more potent memories than the Gears of War Mad World trailer.

Microsoft and The Coalition are bringing the franchise back to the beginning with Gears of War Ultimate Edition. Thankfully, that includes the haunting melody of Gary Jules’ Mad World.

I had the chance to go hands-on with Gears of War Ultimate Edition and was pleasantly surprised by just how great the game looks and plays. The Coalition has fixed some of the issues from the original, notably tweaking cover so it isn’t quite so sticky. You’ll be able to use the enemy spotting feature found in later installments, and there’s a spectator mode if you want to shoutcast your friends getting chewed up by lancers.

Motion capture has been entirely redone, and it looks far more fluid than the original. The Ultimate Edition also includes content not featured in the original that fills in a section of the story that amounts to about 90 - 120 minutes of play.

Gears of War Ultimate Edition will be out on August 25 for Xbox One. For those that play before the end of the year, you’ll unlock the entire Xbox 360 Gears collection via backward compatibility for no additional cost.
