The Campaign is amazing the environmental graphics are phenomenal. Multiplayer is absolutely marvelous with the game modes like Horde mode unseen in the first gears. I am a big time gamer and I would recommend this game not only to shooter gamers but to anyone who appreciate a rock solid game that is Gears of War.

Blog Post: To good!

Well there should have been more guns but it was still beast. In the highly anticipated sequel Delta squad fights their way deep underground into the very heart of the Locust empire to find out why...

The second chapter in the Gears of War saga (which now includes both comics, and full length novels which I have yet to pick up but am looking forward to reading) continues chronicling the exploits of Delta squad as they fight along with the rest of humanity against the subterranean menace that are the Locust. Set six months after the successful deployment of the Lightmass bomb, the Locust return seemingly thriving and stronger than ever. Somehow the Locust are sinking entire cities! They are, however, seemingly more desperate in their efforts. So the humans, equally desperate, decide to take the fight to the Locust in a massive counteroffensive aiming to hit them where they live… deep underground in hope of finding their stronghold and cut off the head of the proverbial beast so that the body might die.

There are some truly memorable moments in Gears of War 2. I don’t want to spoil them for you, suffice it to say several of the set pieces are jaw dropping in both scale and function. The narrative takes some interesting (and unexpected) turns (there are several "Huh?" moments and some glaring plot holes), but let's just say it poses as many questions as it answers. The problem is that while several of these scenes merit discussion, I can't even begin to talk about them (both the good bits and the bad) without giving too much away.

This time around the story is much more Dom-centric as we learn more about his search for his missing wife, Maria (careful observers will remember his search being alluded to as he asked around among the Stranded). While it’s certainly poignant, I felt it was a tad overdone. This sort of melodrama adds a lot in the way of character development and motivation but for me it seems out of place in such a bawdy, action-focused game. The analogous ‘summer popcorn flick’ that it is, Gears 2 would have been fine without this emotional, albeit well done, baggage.

The gameplay is essentially the same with the main focus being on third person cover based shooting sequences with the odd vehicle section tossed in. However, there are a few noticeable additions such as: chainsaw battles (if your opponent is also wielding a Lancer), new variations on curb stomps (which are endlessly entertaining and beautifully brutal), the ability to use a wounded Locust as a human shield (which I just found amusing) and heavy weapons (the 'Mulcher' machine gun is well good, but the mortar gun is just frickin’ awesome).

Another addition to Gears 2 that I liked was rather than just searching for nondescript collectible cog tags, this time those collectible items actually have descriptions that help fill out the back story and the Gears of War milieu in general. There are 41 pieces of intel to find including things like the aforementioned cog tags (although now they have an accompanying story about the person which is usually pretty tragic) to a Locust calendar… actually most of the Locust intel is pretty clever as it serves to explain more about the species, right down to their mythology.

Gears of War was a stunning achievement from a graphical standpoint showing off the power of the new generation of consoles and wowing audiences (me included) the world over. The sequel builds upon this foundation with even sharper environments and greater depth. There are still some texture loading issues, but the sheer scope of their creation allows that to be forgiven. The animations are not only more varied this time around, but more fluid and precise as well.

The sound work lives up to the precedent of its predecessor as well, with all the actors returning (gotta love Cole-train, especially his eloquent discourse towards the end of the game… I’ll leave that for you to enjoy;^). The wonderful sound and weapon effects are just as good, as are the hair-rising-on-the-back-of-your-neck aural cues of the Locust. Gotta love those Wretches. My only complaint is that the end song doesn’t have quite the same… panache, as the original.

One thing I found a bit bizarre was in the original Gears of War the final boss fight was quite difficult, yet in the sequel it’s almost like they took that to heart too much, and made the final confrontation almost laughably easy. It’s almost like the developers just couldn’t make up their minds so went completely to the other end of the spectrum.

My biggest joys with Gears of War come from sitting on the couch with a good friend and a couple of beers, chainsawing and curb-stomping Locust to our hearts content. While I don't usually play online multiplayer, I do want to mention the ‘Horde’ mode. This is basically a multiplayer map where you (and a friend) face wave after wave of increasingly difficult enemies. It’s a clever addition that serves to lengthen the time you’ll spend playing the game. There’s not much point beyond seeing how long you can survive but it’s a nice distraction and we’ve seen other developers include similar mechanics in their games as well since Gears 2 set the bar.

I’m struggling to score Gears of War 2. In many ways it’s a better game than the original; more well rounded in combat and environments, plenty of new enemies and weapons. In other ways it’s more of the same with probably the best action cover system available and familiar faces and foes. Then there is the story, which for me took a step back. While I appreciate what the good people at Epic were trying to do with Dom’s arc, I felt like it wasn’t… necessary. Trying to inject such drama into what has always been the video game equivalent of a Schwarzenegger film just seems tacky. Don't get me wrong, his search for Maria did affect me, especially the first time I played the game, but subsequent playthroughs have left me wondering if such personal motivations were requisite.

So in the end, I've decided to score Gears of War 2 the same as the original. I love them both equally despite a few flaws. With the third and final chapter on the horizon I’m sure I’ll be playing them both again soon just to get ready! This is, hands down, one for my favorite series. With such a solid foundation I can’t wait to see how the story of Delta squad comes to an end.

Cheers,

Si

Score = 9.25 / 10

P.S. First of all, getting into a match takes a very long time. Then once you are in you can't back out of the match. This is very annoying because if you are playing with all guys who are the highest level and you are lagging, its impossible to do anything. When you actually find a match you want to stay in it can be fun. The online is very addictive though as it can be very fun. It also is very unique and deserves to be played even if you think you won't like it.

Gears of War 2 is an excellent game despite its downside in online. It has some of the best looking graphics and some of the best cinematic cut scenes. Overall I give this game a 9.25/10.

Wiki: Gears of War 2 Guides

Guides for Gears of War 2

Wiki Page: Weapon FAQ

Okie doke so this is my 1st FAQ and I know if you have a game manual (if you bought the game) you can find all this in there but some people but the game used and the former owner loses the manual. SO, with that said, enjoy:

-Snub Pistol

-Excellent back-up weapon

-Zoom capable

The standard pistol of COG soldiers, this
little gun doesn't pack much of a punch, but has a high
fire rate. It has a fair amount of ammo, but shouldn't
be used against more then one enemy. Good for multiplayer
gun and run. (**)

-Lancer Assault Rifle

-Fully Automatic

-Midrange Combat

-Deadliest Melee

The infamous standard COG weapon. The Lancer has a
high rate of fire, excellent damage, and sports a large
clip. It can hold up to 700 shots, and is good for
both small and large numbers of locust scum. Of course,
I have to mention a FREAKIN' CHAINSAW BAYONET!!! Yes, this awesome melee
attack is an instant kill, but shouldn't be used
for groups of enemies or for a head on rush. (****)

-Hammerburst Assault Rifle

-Accurate

-Powerful

-Zoom Capable

This is the standard Locust weapon,
and can be found in every level of the game. The gun fires in short bursts and packs a punch (hence the name). It will always have a steady stream of
ammo, but might not be good for large waves of foes,
due to the need for a more precise shot. (***)

-Boltak Pistol

-Powerful

-Zoom Capable

This COG weapon is the best sidearm
in the game. Its pretty much a magnum GOW-style and deals
heavy damage. Two shots can kill most Locusts.
Unfortunatley, it has a small clip, and can't hold
much ammunition (6 shot clip, 30 shots total).
Also has a long reload rate. (***)

-Gorgon Pistol

-Powerful

-Double Clip

-Zoom Capable

Deadly close and mid-range weapon! Yet is offset because of small clip and long reloading times. (**)

-Longshot Sniper Rifle

-Best Zoom Capability

-Deadly at all ranges

The games only sniper rifle. This devastating
gun can cut through Locusts, and can take out the
biggest enemies in 1 or 2 headshots. The downside is
its long reload time, and it requires supreme
accuracy. Good for multiplayer Execution and
Assassination, due to the fact one shot can bring
an opponent to their knees. (***)

-Boomshot

-Powerful

-Lightweight

This huge gun is dropped by the devastating Boomers. It has low ammo, a small blast radius,
and a slow rate of fire, but deals heavy damage if
used right. Takes out most enemies with one shot. This weapon shouldn't picked up, unless
you think you can make the best of it. (**)

-Gnasher Shotgun

-Deadly Close-range

-Good Clip Size

The COG shotgun could be one of the best weapons
in the game. It has incredible power, great ammo
supply, and a fair range. At close range, it decimates the
enemy, much like the chainsaw. Execellent choice
for multiplayer combat. (****)

-Hammer of Dawn

-Hand-Held Targeting

This gun rains hell down on your enemies.
This weapon calls down lasers from sattelites in
the atmosphere. Sadly, it's not good for moving
targets, and you need to be outside, with the sattelite
above you for it to work. Poor choice for
multiplayer. (**)

-Torque Bow

-Advanced Targeting

-Effective Melee

A powerful Locust weapon. This crossbow
like gun fires explosive arrows. You don't get it
till later in the game, but it's worth the wait.
It takes a little bit of time to warm up, but it
kills instantly. It has extendable blades for melee
attacks. Good for multiplayer due to large blast
radius. (***)

-Scorcher Flamethrower

-Effective around Covering Enemies

The games flamethrower. I was very happy when Gears 2 came out. Gears 2 is awesome. The chainsaw duels add a nice twist, and I love Horde mode. I can play this game for hours, and never get bored. Even my girlfriend loves to chainsaw the enemies, or blow of Locust heads with the sniper. This is all around an awesome game.

Blog Post: Full with action pack fun

Cool first game to come out in 2006 but now we are ready for part two. In this guide, I will show you how to kill enemy's, to stay alive, and much more!! Well, I been playing for a year and am 2000 in the world of wingman so I been through it all, Sheild glitches, Lag, Host, you name so you know how i se Gears of war 2 should be played, as a pro.

1: HOW TO POP SHOT/ SHOTGUN

Pop shotting is the most effective way of using the shotgun besides blind firing but that's later. Pop shotting is when you aim for a split second with the left trigger, and let go and shoot at the same time. When you Hard aim, which means staring down your sights, your shot is in a circuler form which does little damage sometimes. When you blind fire, your shots are triangled and are more danmaging for some reson and its a bigger spread so you most likely hit your target. So, when the enemy appears near you, pop shot him.

2: WHEN TO BLIND FIRE

Well, sometimes, when a enemy appears near you but really close, he can go in between your pop shots because it requires time to aim and shoot. This is when you need to blind fire. It is hard but you must learn how to control your camera and set it in the direction of the enemy. Practice is needed for this but it really is easy. Only use it, when your enemy is too close!

3: HOW TO WALL BOUNCE

Wall bouncing is best when you feel that your enemy is about to kill you and you need to dodge his shots. Its simple but requires practice. To wall bounce, press the A button near a wall, and press back on the stick to prevent you from moving. That's a wall bounce and yet you don''t need to touch a wall to do so but if you want the whole impact and shoot back, you must wall bounce towards the enemy. As you closly close on, aim your camera and shoot blind fire.

4: HOW TO CONTROL SPAWNS/ ANNEX

When ever playing annex, you see that it is easy to get kills so to get as many as possible, you must control your areas. If their grenades on the field, plant them on place people would not expect like blood drive, place below on the stairs so when people run down, KILL! Also, to really control and get kills, Must check your surroundings constantly and be aware.

5: CORNER BLIND FIRING

people do not realize this but your more likely to kill someone blind firing from cover than aiming down your sight before getting shot in the face and dying a miserable death. Well, its simple, blind fire at your enemy from your cover and you'll hit them

i will write more later

Wiki Page: Gears of War 2 Guides

Map Pack Achievements

Annex: Now With Execution Rules75G - Win an Annex match on each Flashback and Combustible Map Pack map (public matches only)
Bound by a Shared Past 15G - Win a Wingman match on each of the 5 Flashback Map Pack maps
Forged in the Fire 15G - Win a Wingman match on each of the 3 Combustible Map Pack maps
More Mystery, Less History 15G - Win a multiplayer match on each of the 5 Flashback Map Pack maps (any mode except Wingman)
Skeletons in your Closet 20G - Complete waves 1 through 10 on all Flashback Map Pack maps in Horde (any difficulty)
The Roof! Second, make your way as quickly as possible through the Sires jumping out of their holding tanks to the dual-valve gate. Once you get there, wait for each of the Sires to come at you and simply use the chainsaw to kill them. They only have a melee attack so they almost have no chance of causing the chainsaw to drop. There are only about 25 enemies to kill but by doing this you will save a lot of ammo and keep from being slain from behind while opening the gate

11 Unique Executions

Lancer+B (don't hold B, only tap it)
Shotgun+B
Sniper+B
Sniper+Y
Boltok Pistol+Y
Torque Bow+B
Torque Bow+Y
Boomshield+Y
(When enemy is down)+X
(When enemy is down)+Y
(When enemy is down)+A+X

Defeating the Leviathan (Giant Fish)

After you and Dom fall down a large waterfall you should begin the boss fight against Leviathan. Her tentacles will rise from the water and slam down on the boat. Use your chainsaw to slice through them and anger her. Leviathan will rise from the water and bite down on the boat. Shoot her in one of the eyes and she should back away and roar. After doing this a second time, dive forward when she roars. You will be inside of her mouth. There will be strange blue tentacles inside of her mouth, when they glow shoot them. After a while Leviathan's windpipe will open, throw a grenade inside and watch it explode. If done correctly her windpipe should cough up flames. Do the same thing about two more times (depending on difficulty). Once defeated Leviathan will roar and cough up blood, then die in the water. Happy Fishing!

Easy "Pound of Flesh" Achievement

I found that the easiest way to get this achievement is to set up a local match against bots. When the match starts, grab grenades and then lancer down your opponents. After they are down, Tag them with a grenade and then quickly pick them up and use them as a meat shield. Each kill that you get by doing this counts as a "Pound of Flesh" achievement point.

Secret Video

At the start screen don't press start just wait until you see the video. It will take a few minutes.

Mexican Firefighter

Any time on Mission 1

While fighting the Guards, one of them drops a flamthrower. Use the flamethrower to complete the whole level and you unlock a Easter Egg.

Cowboy Hats

Start at the beginning of Act 1 Chapter 3 "Rolling Thunder" on Insane difficulty. Before the first cutscene you’ll see three cowboy hats. Take out your pistol and shoot them. Remember to press BACK to skip the dialog.
Assuming you are facing the direction the rig will be moving, the first is on the side of the building behind and to the right of the rig.
The second is between the front wheel and back wheel of a tank sitting to the left of the rig.
The third is behind the second large gas tank next to the tank with the previous cowboy hat.
Shooting all 3 will give you the following effects:
Everyone on the rig will put on a cowboy hat.
In the next chapter, if you fail kill the driver of the hijacked rig in time, when you see the cutscene of your rig falling into the ravine, you will see a cowboy hat floating down to earth.
If you succeed to kill the driver of the hijacked rig, he will be wearing a cowboy hat when he hangs out the window before the cutscene.
During the cutscene where the hijacked rig falls into the ravine, you will see a cowboy hat falling down to earth.
A corpser that emerges from the ground later in the chapter will be wearing a cowboy hat and scream "YEE HAW!"

Secret Message after Credits

After the credits are finished a message from Adam Fenix is played, "This is Adam Fenix....Can anyone hear me...Is anyone out there? You see what people fail to realize is that gears 2 was a sh*t storm from the start. From its plot hole filled soap opera story to its horribly flawed unbalanced glitched multiplayer. I will not say it sucks without bringing up points however.

Graphics

Beautiful, Highly detailed, and realistic, unfortunatly this is the games only selling point

Storyline

First off let me tell you about my love for the first gears of war which i still play to this day. Everyone remembers that horrifying cutscene at the end of the fist gears (After handing General Raam's ass to himself on a silver platter.) of the locust riding the nemicest after witnessing the lightmass bomb.

the story to gears 2 starts off after the destruction of the lightmass bomb when you hear that the locust are sinking citys with a giant rockworm and a disease called rust lung has spread. You see this brings us to our first plot hole: rustlung is dangerous and yet its only mentioned in the first chapter, you practicaly hear nothing after that. This pathetic plothole is soon followed by another more ridiculous one: Dizzy dissapears for no apparent reason. you dont see him after you defeat Skorge and he was a pointless character.

It was the same with Tai also. He comes in barly fights with you for a chapter, gets captured you save him and he blows his brains out. These were characters players had no emotional attachment to. Hell i chuckled when Tai blew his brains out. Then there were moments that were just pathetic that you can laugh at, like Dom crying over his wife. I was humiliated to have my family in the room during that cutscene. it was like watching a spanish soap opera.

Multiplayer

Dear God i dont even know where to start on this glitch filled, laggy, flawed, 5 year old infested suck fest. First off being the waiting time you have to go through in order to get into a game only so the retard host can quit so you go down a rank. which reminds me: The Host, if you read the first paragraph to this reveiw this is what i mean by unbalanced. the instant someone becomes the host YOU AUTOMATICALY LOSE!!! The host gets a incredebly unfair advantage.

If one kid has a crappy connection the entire community in the game has to suffer for it. Lets not forget the glitches, oh god the wretched glitches. I swear i was playing once and i saw a kid walk up to me and chainsaw me... with a pistol. with glitches like Invisible man, double melee, crab walking, wall tag and punch, weilding the boom shield with any weapon and many more glitches, Its a living wonder people play this game online in the first place

Lets also not forget the lag. Lag is more common in gears 2 then there are retards in politics. Lag infests every...single...orfice in this game. The lag in this game is a result of little to no work put in the online. All it takes is one laggy connection to ruin the experiance for everyone. The only thing more broken then the servers in the game is the ranking system. The patches dont fix it either, Hell epic wanted us to buy new maps for it before they released the first patch!

Mr.BlenZinski promised us a game that was bigger, better, and more ***, but in the end we got none of that. Instead we got a unfinished, hardly worked on, peice of garbage. I sincerly hope im not the only one who thinks this and i sincerly hope they improve on it in gears 3.

Blog Post: gears of awsome 2

gears of war was the most insane shooter game ever.the graffics are amazing and story line is the coolest story line ever. the enemeys are crazy ugly there mother dreessed them funny so we could fight and kill them ir you as a person dont like this game you then your not a person your a special 3 year old he/she.you can stay a he=she or buy the game play it live, it k bye peace!

Blog Post: Freaking Epic.

this game rocks your socks with a campaign that makes you fight 10 story monsters and epic battles and with awesome multiplayer with TONS of maps and gory and i mean GORY gameplay like sawing someone in half witha chainsaw and steping on someones head and punches someones face in.this game is dam worth the price expecially the GOTY edition that comes with all the maps. so i highly recommend this game if Halo3 wasnt made this game would be the best 360 game ever.

Wiki Page: Dead AI

I have loved the Gears of War series so far but a little warning, don't rely on the AI later on in the game. During the game I wold have trouble with the AI camping on a wall and shooting at it throughout many levels. Just a guide to tell you, GET A BUDDY TO PLAY THE GAME WITH YOU ON INSANE, or you will go insane with anger as you constently dieing because Dom couldn't get off a wall.

Blog Post: The Second Installment of a Sure Trilogy

Gears of War 2, those three words and the one word are legendary on their own. Gears of War 2 is the hugely anticipated second installment to the Gears of War trilogy. Gears of War 2 is basically the amped version of Gears 1. Everything is thought to be better. Gears of war 2 is by far one of the best looking games ever. The advances in Unreal Engine 3 have aloud Cliff and Epic Games to make Gears of War 2 the standard in high definition gaming. The campaign is epic and filled with groundbraking moments. Gears 2 allows players to take control of some of Cogs most feared enimies including Revears and Brumaks. Moments like these make Gears 2 an excitingly high octane experience. The story has also got a major kick. More of the characters back stories are explored. Marcus on his quest to full-fill his destiny and Dom in search of his wife. Both quest are emotional and quite involving. Also a welcome addition is the new down-but-not-out feature. This means that whenever your thrown to the ground now, you'll be able to crawl to help. If your not saved in time you can either be executed or turned into a meatshield. Also is the addition of boomshields. On the multiplayer side there is the new mode named Horde. 50 waves of locusts flowing on getting stornger by every wave. Horde is fun tough and chaotic. Then with every new copy comes the flashback map pack which is the remastered maps of Gears 1.

Blog Post: Gears of War 2 is an awesome game with insane graphics, and a beastly campaign.

Gears of War is easily one of the best games of 2008 for many reasons. The campaign, Horde mode, the graphics, all epic. The story is a well written sci-fi one, with awesome characters(ESPECIALLY Marcus Fenix, he's probably my all time favorite game hero). The story is about elite soldiers called Gears, who are Marcus, Dom, Baird, and Cole(who is hilarious) as they delve deep into Locust(or "Grub") territory to light up the beacon, and kill the queen.

The campaign, as said is frikkin' awesome, you can play it alone or with a friend. It's really long for a shooter campaign, being about 7-11 hrs. The campaign has some good replay value of at least 2-3 playthroughs. For offliners, there's bots to play aginst and with in all the modes in multiplayer, and for onliner, there's(durrr) online multi. The multi(excluding the bot play) isn't very good, as theres more lag than the average game, and the weapons arn't incredibly balanced. Their still pretty balanced though. The bot play is really fun though, especially split-screened with a friend. Horde mode is alot of fun, its a survival mode with 50 rounds and the farther you go, the harder it gets. You can also turn the difficulty up when it starts getting to easy. You and some friends fight dozens of Locust each round, as the types of Locust get harder, so does their health, accuracy and damage every 10 levels.

The graphics in this game are some of the best out there, and push the limits of all game's graphics. The characters and enviorments are beautifully detailed.

The voice acting is top notch, the gun and other sounds are very well done. The soundtrack is great.

So overall Gears of War 2 is a flat-out awesome game that should be in everyones collection(exept kids 12 and younger, its really violent). You will also find alot of replay value in this game as well.
The Good-
-Great campaign
-Bot matches
-Horde mode
-Super awesomeness graphics
-Great voice acting
-Cool characters
-Good story
-Co-op
The Bad-
-Online lag
-Online glitchers
-Online
-Some Glitches
Gameplay: 9.5
Graphics: 10.0
Sound: 9.75
Replay Value: 9.25
Overall: 9.5

Blog Post: Disappointment

I was a diehard Gears of War 1 fan.

Everything about Gears of War 2 strays away from what made Gears of War 1 great. The multiplayer is broken, the campaign is too long, and the graphics are cartoony now.

What made Gears1's campaign so great was how dark and desolate the atmosphere was. It felt like you were the last remaining hope for human kind and you are a lone. In Gears2 this feeling is ruined by the introduction of the COG army. The story is too soapy and seeing emotion out of the characters just feels awkward.

The pacing of the campaign is just terrible. There were parts where I was begging for them to end because it kept on going on and on and on. There were many parts where the developers artificially made longer just for the sake of having a longer campaign.

Don't even get me started on Multiplayer. I think everyone knows whats wrong with it.

As for the graphics, yah they're nice looking, but they don't fit the Gears style. The first game's graphics were gritty and up close and personal. Gears2's graphics are built around vistas and are more cartoony. It' appears that Epic was just trying to use Gears2 to showcase the improvements they made to the Unreal Engine. This can be seen throughout the campaign as well, with some levels being designed around a new improvement to the engine.

Despite all of these shortcomings, there is a diamond in the rough. Horde mode is fun and addictive. However, it gets old fast because you fight the same enemies in the same pattern over and over again, but Horde is definitely the strongest part of the game.

In the end, Gears2 strays away from what made the first game so great and ends up being a mess. Here's hoping they get it right in the third game!
