Forma.8 Bringing Metroidvania Exploration To PS4, Vita, And Wii U

Forma.8 from young Italian developer MixedBag promises to bring a science-fiction, Metroidvania-style game to PlayStation 4, Vita, and Wii U.

In the game, players take on the role of scanning probe that lost contact with its companions, and must explore an alien planet on its own. The world is physics-based, and offers a large explorable world full of secrets and power-ups. MixedBag is also says to expect a mysterious story all delivered without dialogue. For more on the game, check out its announcement post on the PlayStation blog.

You can watch the trailer for the game below, which recalls the unrelated game Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, a game we think highly of.

  • This looks awesome! I'm glad to see so much indie games coming to WiiU and PS4. I thought they were going to slowly fade away but thankfully that's not the case at all.
  • I saw a trailer for this game and I instantly wanted it. I can't wait to get it.

  • I think praising this as "Metroidvania" is a bit narrow minded, considering you fly everywhere. It's sort of like Castlevania if you only had your bat form. I'm confused by this newfangled buzzword.
  • Mod
Games looks great. I know people will think I'm crazy, but I got a Loco Roco vibe, lol. Either way, looking forward to playing it.
  • Looks a bit like PixelJunk Shooter. Wii U owners should check out UnEpic for a "Metroidvania" style of game. It has a very indie presentation but it's a surprisingly deep game. Almost too deep. I've been playing for 16 hours and I've only explored 67% of the castle. Also, I may have been baked, but I'm pretty sure I saw Zoidberg and Admiral Ackbar.
  • Hmmm...this looks a lot like Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet to me. That's not a bad thing, as that was one of my favorite XBLA games from 2011.

  • Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet was amazing! Definitely looking forward to this after hearing that analogy.

  • I like what I'm seeing so far. Hopefully developer Mixedbag doesn't deliver a"mixed bag". Yeah that was terrible.
  • But will it come to PC?

Probably, but one can't help but wonder.

  • The music was awesome; I hope it's in the game and not just composed for the trailer.

  • I've always wanted to do some deep space probing.

  • I really like seeing games like this coming about. Of course, good AAA, high budget games are great and necessary, but I think it's cool that in 2014, small and creative indie titles can be enjoyed in harmony with huge titles like Destiny, Uncharted, MGS, Titanfall, etc.

  • Metroidvania style games always fit perfectly well on the Vita. Does anyone know of some more other than Guacamelee and Castlavania SOTN?

  • There is actually a surprisingly large number of "Metroidvania" style games coming to the Wii U.

Seems that such a design has become a full-blown genre these days.
