We’ve raved about Towerfall. We’ve lauded Samurai Gunn. Now, a new competitor is entering the arena for one-vs-one combat. Foiled! takes the fencing concepts of Nidhogg and blends them with existentialism.

In Foiled! being human means being stabbed with a sword and your soul being used as a prize. It’s not enough to kill your foe. You must carry his soul to the goal further from you, one of which is placed in each of the top corners of the map. There’s only a limited amount of time to score, so the game moves between neutral and offensive/defensive play quickly.

When I played at IndieCade East, I found the controls to be fluid and easy to learn. The simple upward slash and diving attacks in combination with jumps and jockeying for position around the varied maps made for intense planning. There is more strategy involved than you might expect, especially since there are no projectile weapons.

The best two out of three rounds wins, though not without the opportunity to humiliate their opponent. Upon sealing the victory, the winner grows large and chases their foe around the map.

There is no bonus for stomping your opponent other than bragging rights. But let's be honest. In a game like this, bragging rights are really all that matter.

You can download Foiled! right now (free) for PC. The game is also making a play for Steam Greenlight.
