Flashback Returns In Downloadable HD Remake

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Delphine Software's Flashback (Flashback: The Quest for Identity in the U.S.), Ubisoft is releasing an HD remake for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

The game is not a simple up-res version of the original, but rather a remake via the Unreal Engine. The trailer below lists developer VectorCell, which is an independent company formed by Flashback creator Paul Cuisset – so you know that this version of the title is getting some love.

This new Flashback takes the original's 2D side-scrolling action and renders it in 3D while still keeping the spirit of that game.

Ubisoft has not provided a price or exact release date for the game. It is, however, tabbed to be "coming soon."

Although not directly related to Flashback, if you liked Delphine's other action side-scroller from the 90s – Out of this World – check out my Moments feature on that title.

  • OMG, YES! This game was amazing! I remember playing this on my buddy's Genesis for hours on end. That game looked so insanely fantastic at the time, and this was one of the first games I remember really having a story that kept me interested. The only thing better than getting an HD remake that you wanted, is getting an HD remake that you didn't realize you wanted until they made it.
  • you advertisements are mind numbingly repetitive.
  • I can't wait to try it out!

  • hell yeah.  i'm all up in this!!!

  • Kinda wish it still had the animated style and astetic, looks like a sequal to Epic's Shadow Complex.

  • HELL YEAHR!! I have the foundest memories of this game when i was a teenager.. I frig´n loved this game.. so this is gonna be a Day 1 buy for me.. cant wait to go down memory lane with this game.

  • I don't remember that game but this looks awesome. Give us a release date Ubisoft!
  • I used to just roll back and forth drawing my pistol in this game, just watching how fluid the character animations were for the time. Love this game. Still have a copy for my SNES though I liked the Sega CD version better. Can't wait to play this!

  • It'll be interesting to see if anything has been "modernized" besides the graphics. The original game, though very pretty, has not aged well gameplay-wise. Also annoying to see the Wii U not listed above. And fun fact, kids: Delphine Software, the guys who originally made this and Out of this World (Another World) would later disgrace gaming by developing Shaq-Fu.
  • wow just wooow

  • Mod
VectorCell... isn't that the company that made Amy?

Hopefully they do a better job on this one. On the other hand, a remake doesn't seem as hard to glib up as a new IP.

I dig Flashback and Another World/Out of this World and Prince of Persia and games of its ilk so I might give this a look.
  • I'm very excited for this. I just hope it's really good.

  • Wow.  That looks a lot better than I thought it would before I watched the clip.

  • This looks fantastic though quite a bit different from what I remember of the original which was a tense slow paced game (nerve racking every time you'd step into a new screen).

That said, it looks like it will fill the void that the lack of a Shadow Complex sequel has left.  Definitely going to check this out.

  • Fantastic! Loved this game as a Young Buck.  Time to go on a Quest For Identity again!

  • Wow!  It looks like they put some love into this remake.  Nice.

  • Flashback and Out of This World were 2 of my favorites growing up. I will be in line for this, for sure!

    "Anoosta! Anoosta!"

    "My tooba!"

  • I played it on PC when i was a kid. This version looks like it has a lot more action than i remember. I remember the game being pretty boring honestly. Great graphics for it's time though.

  • Great news. I loved the original version. Never did make it past the death tower segment though.

  • Oh wow!!!
