Long-Awaited Indie Platformer Now Due In Early 2012

Polytron Corporation's forever-in-development yet fascinating 2D/3D platformer is on schedule for a new, slightly later "early 2012" release date according to founder Phil Fish's Twitter feed.

The game has been making the rounds for years. Fish had previously suggested a soft 2011 release date, but that apparently isn't going to happen.

Fez is a unique platformer that plays with your perceptions of two-dimensional and three-dimensional space after drawing you in with a cutesy art style reminiscent of the 16-bit classics of yore. We're as interested in it as anybody, but the game has to just come out at this point. Which it will, probably, but only on Xbox Live Arcade – Fish blasphemously stated on Twitter that "it's a console game. for consoles. PCs are for spreadsheets."

Check out the "long screenshot" below for the latest visuals from Fez's development.

  • Man... that game looks pretty awesome. Words fail me.

  • At some point in time, PLEASE come to PSN!
  • I'm so excited for this game. It just looks really darn cool.

  • I've had my eyes on this since it was first announced, I had given up on an actual release a while ago. But now I am happy face :)

  • This looks pretty sweet. I can't wait to see more. Man, some indy developers have some real creative chops.

  • Sarcasm on the internet is hard, so forgive me if that is what was intended...but if he is serious about that comment regarding PCs then I don't think this is one indie developer I will likely support.

  • Fez invokes the same emotion that Limbo did when i watched trailers for it. Take your time developers. I know it's gonna be a masterpiece.

  • I've been anticipating this game for a while now, my most wanted title ahead of Journey. This is truly the age of Downloadable Arcade game.

My Favorites List: (Cause everyone loves lists, right?)

    1. Shadow Complex

    2. Limbo

    3. Flower

    4. Braid

    5. Geometry Wars 2

    6. Fat Princess

    7. Trials HD + Expansion

    8. Castle Crashers

    9. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

    10. Bastion

P.S. - I have a Plants Vs. Zombies game for 360 which also includes Peggle & Zuma, hence why none of these titles are listed. I also recently acquired WipeOut HD + Fury expansion & Infamous, though I was hesitant to include them with more "Arcadey" titles. Also give a big runner-up thumbs up for all Pixeljunk games I've played, just haven't had long enough with them yet. Last but not least, Castlevania: SotN was not included on my list because I also have the PSP remake of Rondo of Blood, which included that particular gem if unlocked in level 3, and allowed players to play the "complete version" of Symphony of the Night including a playable Maria, which was not available upon US PS1 release, and a reworked script, among other additions.

  • looks cool

  • its a console game, for xbox. );

  • i love the soundtrack. This reminds me of Flatland.
