It looked pretty good, but I wasn't sure about it. When it came out, I was deeply interested because the game was getting great reviews from the critics. So of course it's after christmas, (tell you how far behind I am in reviews) and I really wanted to try this game out. So one rainiy day, I decided what the heck, and I tried it out. Once I picked up that controller, I was hooked. Far cry 3 is probably one of the biggest surprises of 2012.

The Graphics are amazing. With this and Assassin's creed 3, Ubisoft was graphics king of 2012. The jungle is so beautifully detailed that just makes you go wow. Really one of the best looking games of 2012. The gameplay is a blast. Really well executed. You start out weak of course, but the more and more you play, you become an unstoppable warrior. Thats when it's really fun.

The story was easily one of my favorite features. It was very well executed. It will take you about 8-12 hours, or more if you get sidetracked. It was so dark and twisted, but at the same time, it was a adrenaline rush. The characters were also well developed. The voice actors all did a great job. Vaas though steals the show. He's easily one of the best villians of this year. Even after the story, there's still so much things to do on this tropical islands. From collecting stuff, to destroying outposts, to side missions, you'll be busy for a while.

The last thing that Far cry 3 has to offer is multiplayer. Of course you have your co-op and your competitive modes. Co-op is actually pretty fun. The co-op is broken down into a seperate story with 6 mission that together are about 4-6 hours. It's not the greatest story, but for the co-op mode, it's a blast. You and your buddies will have fun. Competitve is your basic deathmatch. Basically call of duty meet far cry 3. Nothing special, and nothing to good.

Overall, I walked away with Far cry 3 blown away. A sure shock of how great this game is. If you you like dark/twisted stories+adrenaline rush feeling+great gameplay+tons of stuff to do, then this is the game for you. That's why I give Far cry 3 a

9.5 out of 10

Wiki: Far Cry 3 Guides

Guides for Far Cry 3

Blog Post: First Screenshots Revealed For Apocalyptic Twist On A Well-Known Franchise

It seems that All Games Beta has leaked new screenshots for the rumored-standalone game, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. One of the biggest things that's baffled me throughout the years is the near constant shift in premise among the main titles and numerous spin-offs that it bares no need to start with the original. However, Far Cry 3 is the most coherent, character driven installment and to be frank, one of the most interesting games I've ever encountered.

The game follows the first hand account of rich brat Jason Broody who finds himself in a living hell after skydiving with his companions onto an uncharted island. Things go eyry when a band of ruthless pirates kidnap them and plan on selling them into slavery. Fortunately, Jason escapes and begins on his epic quest to reclaiming his friends and family, maybe a act of revenge here and there.

From the first prison escape you can tell this shooter will be unlike any other out there. The sandbox environment gives you a multitude of attack options and the awesome arsenal is no short of impressive. Jason, whom starts off as a whiny baby slowly becomes a predator, and much like "Special Ops: The Line" dialogue and actions progress along with the story making the character arc that much more impressive. While the entire cast is amazing, Micheal Mando's portrayal of Vaas Montenegro is equally interesting as is haunting, easily beating Heath Ledger's Joker any day. Each encounter with Vaas brings so much more to the game offering a deep mature psychological narrative that asks the player the very question of violence and insanity.

Asides the great voice acting, the RPG elements in the game shines far beyond any other FPS out there. As you progress, the tattoo on Jason's arm grows revealing a much more savage ink. This is a nice touch and immerses you further into the game. Another great thing about the upgrades is that they are totally noticeable and as you progress you convert from prey to predator.

When you're not killing pirates or slaying mercenaries there's plenty to do on the island. From hang gliding to hunting the game offers plenty of side missions to keep you preoccupied since the main story is sadly a tad short. No complaints, after all it's quality over quantity, but the story truly holds you.

The only downsides I see in this game is the loading times and mandatory "Blank" Leather needed to upgrade certain equipment, I mean why the hell would you need shark skin to make a better wallet? But in the complaint department I really see no problems.

Besides single player Far Cry offers a great multiplayer option regardless if it's a niche market compared to COD or Halo. Map Editor is more robust than ever and has always been a favorite of mine. You can dive into countless hours making the most insane of maps and sharing it with friends. While you won't find many people playing this online, there's plenty of fun to be had if you know people who play it as well.

The overall verdict for Far Cry 3 is astonishing. For a long time I've craved for something as fresh and new as this game has been, not only are you emotionally invested in damn near all the characters, the game is so robust and abundant you'd be crazy not to pick it up. This is hands down the best game of last year.

Blog Post: Far Cry 3 Review: Into the heart of insanity

Since the original Far Cry came out and the team behind it went on to make Crysis ( a game that felt decidedly more like the original Far Cry than Far Cry 2 did), the series has left players guessing what to expect in future installments. The console port of Far Cry (titled Far Cry: Instincts) added mutant powers to the mix, while the first true sequel ended up having nothing to do with Far Cry in favor of a tale of civil war in a failed African country. Far Cry 3 returns players to a tropical island as another unfortunate soul forced to survive events beyond his grasp, but it’s still a far cry (ironic “haha” here) from the series roots. It is hard to complain about the lack of connections with previous games when this ends up being the best game in the series thus far, and in the end it’s easy to see where all the games share common themes of survival, stealth action and open ended gameplay. As a bonus, it’s also very easy to recommend to series newcomers with no plot connections holding it back.

Players play as a talented but aimless yuppie named Jason Brody, who gets captured along with his friends and brothers by a band of slavers on an island with a history of inducing madness to everyone from Japanese soldiers in WWII to Chinese Warlords from centuries ago. The game has one of the most effective introductions in gaming I’ve seen this generation, forcing players to hit the ground running and learn on their feet as Jason himself does. The game never breaks from Jason’s point of view throughout the entire game, and while the characterization of Jason and his friends can feel a bit bewildering to players and forces the plot to center around Jason, it’s an effective way to keep the player immersed and makes the set pieces and story moments feel much more interesting and personal.

The story itself has its ups and downs, with the second half noticeably feeling weaker than the first half, but it ends up being very entertaining and can be very surprising. Without spoiling anything, the game seems to offer two different intertwining plot lines and does a good job of using differences in everything from the music to the characters in both to convey Jason’s internal struggle with the violence he’s forced to face. Jason’s rich friends are annoying and self-centered but it’s easy to forget how realistic their personalities and actions are compared to Jason’s approach, while the more outlandish island natives are more interesting but also aren’t exactly the best influences on Jason.

The characters all definitely have personalities all of their own, and it’s nice to see the contrast in personalities when dealing with different characters from different parts of the island (ranging from the lunatic pirate leader Vaas, to the drug addicted former scientist Dr. Earnhardt). Combined with some of the crazier set pieces and drug induced moments, it’s easy to see why the developers chose to go use quotes from Alice in Wonderland when the game has you tumbling down the rabbit hole.

With the main story thread, it’s almost as if the developers had two different stories in mind, one focusing on a gritty revenge/survival scenario, and another going for the Hollywood cliché of a handsome American outsider initiating himself into a tribe and becoming the best warrior of the Rakyat (the name of the main island tribe). It’s an interesting mix, and while there are commonly used tropes and clichés all throughout, it seems to be done on purpose to throw the player off from the more outlandish moments throughout the game. The game seems to take itself too seriously and reuses common plot devices far too often, but the presentation and seeing it through Jason’s eyes makes the plot more exciting than it would be otherwise. The game also does a great job of throwing subtle bits of history about the island and its characters through side missions and hidden within the environment, which goes a long way towards immersing the player into the world.

Even without the stylish plot presentation, the huge island and unbroken chain of events you experience make it difficult to pull yourself away. The island is full of activities and events, random and scripted that can keep players playing for hours at a time. From the outposts dotted throughout the land that the player can tackle any way they choose (rewarding them with a fast travel point and more jobs), to various side missions ranging from hunting and assassinations, to speed runs and target shooting. Even without side missions it’s easy to get lost just exploring the various unique caves and locations for relics and loot while hunting animals to craft better items or to sell. The game just makes it impossible to not have something to do, and it’s an improvement on the repetitive design of Far Cry 2 while also maintaining the graphical quality the game is known for. This is a very beautiful game, and if you have the money for a great PC it’s well worth it to see the impressive views and characters without sacrificing framerate stability (which the console versions unfortunately have a few issues with).

The actual gunplay and gameplay mechanics are also very refined and greatly improved from Far Cry 2. Different enemy types like snipers and heavies require different strategies, while combat seems designed for different approaches to utilize your vast arsenal and skill set. Want to run in guns blazing with a few combat syringes and some cover fire? Go ahead. How about using a bow to stealthily eliminate enemies from afar before sneaking in an eliminating the rest by hand? Also a valid option. You can even say “screw it” and just sit back and snipe everyone or drive in with a jeep loaded with C4. The AI certainly isn’t smart enough to deal with any plan you might come across and for an untrained newcomer to the island, Jason certainly ends up being more capable than he has any right to be, but it’s hard to complain when you’re having a blast.

The game also supports competitive and co-operative multiplayer modes, but both aren’t nearly on the same level of quality as the single player. The multiplayer ticks all the boxes for basic design in a modern shooter, but outside of a few cool mechanics (like takedowns and battle cries), it’s largely forgettable. The co-op fares better, but like the original Far Cry goes for a more linear path with open ended areas instead of allowing players to just go around doing what they like. Its fun with a few friends, but you can find better co-op in Borderlands or Left 4 Dead, and it lacks the sense of freedom and exploration the main game offers.

Overall, Far Cry 3 is a massive improvement from the first two games in the series and carves an identity for itself despite its name. Despite some minor issues in the campaign (somewhat unintelligent AI, jarring HUD, mixed plot), it’s one of the best games of 2012 and possibly the best shooter to come out that year. If you want a game you can marvel at and spend hours playing until the sun comes up, Far Cry 3 is that game.

Blog Post: A holiday in hell.

Far Cry 3 is probably one of the best FPSs out there and for good reason. Far Cry 3 doesn't force you to shoot everything that has a pulse, instead you can try stealth and silent take-downs, which definitely fits the game and when you do end up in a mass fire fight, it feels tense and exciting, which other FPSs such as Killzone 3 and Black Ops 2 don't feel tense or exciting. There are a few issues with the game but it's really hard to care when you're having so much fun. Far Cry 3 is one of my favourite games ever made and I highly recommend it to anyone. The only major flaw is that the multiplayer lacks inspiration and it's pretty dull, but as a single player experience the game is brilliant. Go buy it if you haven't already.

Blog Post: Far Cry 3 (PS3 Review)

The ultimate vacation

The Far Cry series is somewhat unique in that it has no continuous timeline to speak of. Instead, brand new storylines and locations are offered up with each subsequent instalment. Not many sequels make this distinction but it allows developer Ubisoft Montreal to take the series in different directions without being confined to the laws of continuity. The results are that Far Cry 3 is easily the best game in the series to date.

Players assume the role of 25-year-old Jason Brody who is vacationing with his friends in the South Pacific. Things go wrong when the group is captured by slave-trading pirates during a skydiving trip, but Jason is able to make a fortunate escape with help from the local Rakyat tribe. Believing they have found a saviour to overthrow the pirate's tyranny, the Rakyat set Jason upon the Path of the Warrior: a rite of passage that will teach him to hunt, forage, and develop the skills required to rescue his friends from slavery.

The story is effective in the way it keeps your goals clearly defined, but you'll be able to tackle these missions at your own leisure. If you've become accustomed to today's era of super-soldier protagonists however, you'll likely find Jason's evolution to be a stretch. The game hints Jason is a daredevil and his overnight confidence is helped by some intense tribal hallucinogens, but it's hard to suspend your disbelief when paragliding into a pirate camp, driving off a cliff, or punching a great white shark square in the face (yes, I'm serious).

It's also odd that the Rakyat would see some rich white kid from California as their local hero. Character growth is always a good thing, but I never latched on to the story as much as I wanted to. Luckily all of this does little to dampen the experience. Far Cry 3's first-person, open-world gameplay is its main draw and messing around on Rook Island might be the most fun I've had with a sandbox world, period.

Before you know it you'll be engaged in whatever thrill-seeking activity you can find. Hunting man-eating animals, ziplining across chasms, diving into hidden caves to search for ancient relics; there's practically a smorgasbord of activity begging to be explored. Progress the main story to the halfway mark and you'll unlock a second island of equal size and scope.

Nearly all of these distractions grant Jason benefits, but even if they didn't they'd still be satisfying endeavours. Scaling radio towers, for example, allows you to map out the immediate area, highlight landmarks, and open additional missions. However, each tower's dilapidated condition means climbing one becomes a puzzle as you carefully navigate your way to the top. Metal creaks and platforms sway in the wind as you jump across gaps and scramble up ledges, creating a thrilling sense of vertigo. After you reach the summit and disable communications, you can zipline down the powerlines in an instant, commandeer a conveniently placed vehicle and be on your way. It's simple and rewarding.

If you're looking to upgrade your arsenal, then the hunting and crafting system is another pleasant diversion. Jason can use animal pelts to craft pouches which increases his carrying-capacity for weapons, ammunition, health and money, and the game encourages you to pursue these upgrades by initially limiting you to a single gun and restricted inventory. Perhaps it needn't have done so though, as gunning down a charging tiger or Komodo dragon is exhilarating stuff. It's not a deep system, but hunting creatures that act so naturally within the game world is a refreshing change from regular fetch quests that you'll rarely get tired of it.

Even with all the opportunities Rook Island affords, the clear standout are the pirate camps. Pirates tend to patrol main areas, but you can make traversal easier by taking out the enemies in a camp and claiming it for your own. Doing so lowers pirate influence and allows the Rakyat to move in and provide you with additional tasks. Here my preferred method usually involved approaching from a distance, marking enemy locations on the HUD, firing off a few preliminary shots with a silenced rifle and then finishing the job with a combination of lethal takedowns. Stealth generally increases your chances of success and will net you more experience, but you could just as easily attach some C4 to a paraglider, swoop from a cliff face and bail out at the last second, detonator in hand. The choice is yours.

The experience gained from story and side missions will unlock you more weapons and perks, and the game world responds by giving you added reasons to use them. Setting explosives on main roads and alarm boxes can deter pirate reinforcements, caged animals can be released onto their unsuspecting captors with a well-placed shot, and starting fires from a distance with a flare gun or flame arrows create useful diversions. Your tactics can often compliment the landscape too; a beachside camp might be open to a stealthy underwater approach, whereas a heavily-wooded area allows for more effective use of fire.

Far Cry 3 does have one notable issue though and it's the lack of endgame content for its single player. Upon completion of the main story you can revisit unfinished missions but the map is mostly devoid of enemies. With no new game plus, starting over means you'll lose every weapon and upgrade you've acquired, whereas not starting over means you'll be an unstoppable killing-machine with practically nothing to do. Granted there are a few mini-games and score-based trials that remain playable, but unfortunately they don't measure up to the core experience of the base game.

A new addition to the series is a four player co-op which features a short campaign unrelated to Jason's story. It's a mostly linear affair and lacks the open-world magic of the main story, but the co-op strikes a nice balance between story-driven game play and pitting you against your friends in various point scoring challenges.

Far Cry 3 also includes an online mulitplayer with the usual game types and customisation you'd come to expect, plus a few extras. The new Firestorm match feels right at home in the Far Cry universe, and an extensive map editor should increase the online life of the game considerably. Hit detection occasionally feels touch-and-go, but the gunplay is otherwise solid and the scripted end-game celebrations between teams (which can be assigned in your load out) will undoubtedly get a few laughs.

Overall, Far Cry 3 is game which has a very obvious vibe of player-choice reverberating through it. The opportunities available are simply too numerous to list, but half the fun is discovering them through your own experimentation. It's perhaps best summarised during a scene where Jason is chastised for not treating his overall mission with the seriousness it deserves.

"You think almost being killed or sold into slavery is fun!?" a support character angrily demands. Jason avoids the question but it doesn't matter. Given the wealth of freedom and excitement Far Cry 3 consistently offered me, I already knew his answer.

9.25

PS3 - Xbox 360 - PC

Concept: Become a tribal warrior (with guns) as you seek to overthrow an island of pirates and reclaim your friends.

Graphics: Rook Island is breathtakingly beautiful and full of life. Some trippy scenes involving hallucinogens are equally impressive.

Sound: The emphasis on dub step seems like an odd choice but suits the tone quite well during shoot-outs. Michael Mando's performance as pirate leader Vaas is simply outstanding.

Entertainment: Some storyline missions could have been less linear, but the emphasis on freedom here is otherwise unmatched; this is open-world gaming at its best.

Playability: Shooting is tight and responsive and takedowns are effortless. Driving will demand increased focus though; expect to unintentionally drive off a cliff from time to time.

Replay Value: Moderate.

Blog Post: Lush, Bloody, and Insanely Fun

Never have I seen such a false advertisement in a video game before now. The island on Far Cry 3 looks like it's straight from a postcard. People look at a place this beautiful and say, "I want to go there.", and main protagonist, Jason Brody, does with his friends and brother. Bad idea. While enjoying the life of barely legal young adults on a lush island, Jason and his friends find themselves trapped by pirates and put up on the market for slavery. And immediately, you meet one of the best villains in gaming history, Vaas (more on him later). With a great story, gameplay, and a big an awesome island to explore, Far Cry 3 has enough to be one of the best shooters of 2012.

From this picture, you likely wouldn't be able to tell that Jason was once a scared tourist just trying to have fun. That face carries determination, drive, and ambition. But there's a more vulnerable side to it. Fear. A hint of regret and exhaustion. This is the Jason Brody that you see in Far Cry 3. Jason is as scared as a human could possibly be early in the game. Slowly, you see him taught by the resistance on the island to be a warrior, to take what he wants and slaughter anything in the way. When he learns, he becomes more accustomed to murdering others, and his quest to save his friends carries him through. The story carries this character progression through to the last cutscene, and seeing the change is amazing. This progression is rapped in an awesome story with more than a few excellent characters, like Vaas. More than a few times, this man will ask, "What is the definition of insanity?". To save on spoilers, I won't tell why that question is such a great one to ask. Anyway, the story is fantastic, with plenty of really good twists to keep you intrigued.

Much of the gameplay is similar to that of a generic first-person shooter. The RPG element with it is what makes it different. As you play, you will level up and gain skill points, which you can use to upgrade your abilities. Those abilities are represented by tattoos on your left arm, which look good. All of the upgrades are a big help in combat. Also, as you progress, you will have to go in parts of the island not shown on the map or radar and find a radio tower. This will open up parts of the island for you to explore fully as well as give you free weapons to use. The system is similar to Assassin's Creed, and it encourages you to explore the island fully. Exploring the island fully will take a lot, however. In every section of the world, there are enemy bases that you can take over to make that part of the world safer.

Along with generic enemy killing, you can hunt in the game. There are areas in the world where certain animals are located. There are many animals to hunt, from the deadly Komodo Dragon to the even more deadly shark. These animals' skins are used to make bigger wallets for money, bigger pouches for loot, etc. My only problem with this system is that certain size pouches require certain animals' skin. I understand that it encourages hunting different animals, but if I can make wallet from pig skin, it doesn't make sense that I now need Komodo Dragon's skin for the bigger wallet. You can also make syringes for different purposes and different types of ammunition.

Along with all that, almost every mission can be tackled in any way you choose, and the plentiful weapons and upgrades mean that you can cater to your own play style. There also a lot of good side missions and activities to keep you distracted. One small complaint I had with the AI, though, is that they're not that smart. They'll usually take you out in sheer numbers, but don't expect them to flank and, sometimes, to even take cover. Despite that, the gameplay is awesome and addicting as well as very deep. I loved experimenting with the possibilities in missions and in the game world.

The graphics look amazing. Character animation is great. The island is stunning, especially from the top of a radio tower. Ancient ruins look great and are intriguing, and there's a lot of good detail. The visuals, understandably, just can't keep up, though. It takes a while sometimes for visuals to actually smooth out and look like they're supposed to. Surprisingly, however, I never hit a point where the frame rate slowed down gameplay.

The sound is, for the most part, great. Voice acting and dialogue are top notch, and gunfights sound great. I just had a minor complaint about distant gunshots. When I heard other people fighting, it didn't sound as good as if I was fighting. It sounded more like a gunfight from an older movie, which was strange to me. Other than that, everything is fine.

The multiplayer consists mostly of the same things you'd see in Call of Duty. There are the traditional Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, which we've all seen before. You play, level up, customize weapons, and play again. The huge world is split up into a good amount of maps for you to kill in. The biggest change, from what I've seen so far, is the humiliation or mercy system. Of course, that's just my name for it, and I don't the actual name of it. Anyway, basically, what happens is that the highest-scoring person on the winning team chooses to either humiliate or have mercy on the highest-ranking person on the losing team. You can unlock and choose from many of many ways of humiliating or taking mercy on the enemy. This is a very interesting and fun addition to me, and I want to keep playing just for that. The multiplayer mode isn't necessarily bad, but I would've expected something bigger and better in an open-world game. The main multiplayer mode, while good, is just underwhelming.

Unfortunately, I haven't really tried the level editor on the game, so I can't have an opinion on it. The co-op mode lets you choose between four different characters in a separate storyline from the single player game. You can do this split-screen or online, but I don't see many people playing this. The levels are linear and small, without an interesting story and with just generic first-person shooter gameplay. I was bored by the second mission.

Despite its small shortcomings, Far Cry 3 offers an excellent single player mode and a solid competitive multiplayer mode to keep you playing for a while. The single player story and gameplay are so good that they make Far Cry 3 a contender for the shooter of 2012. This is a must-have for anyone looking for a fun, unique shooter.

Wiki Page: Far Cry 3; I wanted to save my friends as fast as I could and I ran around like a crazy person, rushing the process, to get them away from those psychos. What I learned from this the second time was to slow down.

In this game you need the right kind of weapons and you need your bag to be able to hold a lot of animal skins and leaves. Big keys to success.

1. Sell everything the game doesn't tell you that you need. You don't need it so don't try to keep it.

2. Go out and find every tower and try to take every base you can. This will open up the world and make it easier to hunt. If you have the property in the green then you don't have to worry about bandits trying to kill you as well as the tiger you are hunting.

3. Silence is deadly. Buy silencers and learn to use a bow. It will make a world of difference.

With this game, the more you know, the more you discover, the better your player will be. Unlock the skills you will use. If you don't use grenades then leave those alone and try another way to build your skill tree.

Hope this helps.

Blog Post: Far Cry 3 Review

“It is like Skyrim, with guns.” This was the first and greatest praise I heard about Far Cry 3 before finally laying my hands on it during the holidays. It was a grand compliment to live up to; the level of open-world freedom, storytelling, and pure badassery that Skyrim achieved was unprecedented and stands today as one of the great video game accomplishments of this, and indeed every, generation.

Far Cry 3 certainly fills this memorable accolade, for better or for worse.

The first sight upon taking control of the game’s protagonist, Jason Brody, is of the mohawk-clad pirate radical, Vaas. His tattoos, piercings, cutoffs and hairstyle all combine to immediately implant his visage into the player’s mind. And the words he says to Jason, and his act of turning away and allowing Jason to escape the jail cell he’s held in, combine to make Vaas the most interesting character of Far Cry 3 from the very beginning.

Vaas is the crowning jewel of Far Cry 3. His personality and mannerisms are realistic and haunting, and he has a knack for showing up in the most unlikely of places. Each and every time Jason encounters Vaas, something crazy and often ridiculous happens, always accompanied by the antagonist’s fateful and favorite rhetorical question. “Have I ever told you the definition of insanity…?”

Unfortunately for the story, Vaas is not the only antagonist. There is also the boss of the entire pirate/slave ring operation, who only shows up at the very end and is forgettable enough that I cannot recall his name at the time of this writing. The resolution with Vaas is underwhelming and over-the-top; the conflict with the privateer warlord is indirect for most of the time. Had Vaas been the only enemy, the story would have been much more solid.

As it stands, however, Far Cry’s plot is interesting enough. Jason must find his friends and brother scattered across the island, but necessity forces him to learn how to kill. Eventually he becomes a trained assassin, losing all of the naiveté that he possessed at the start of the game. This is executed effectively, and is so gradual that only certain clues from other characters reveal the changes that Jason has experienced. The looks that his friends give him are especially strong because of Jason’s love for them contrasted with his developing difference from them. They all land on the island as young, wild college kids; Jason becomes a cold-blooded killer while all the rest stay relatively similar. The endings to the story are interesting but not necessarily good. One is cliché and predictable, the other is so off-the-wall as to be nearly offensive.

But few who pick up Far Cry 3 will care about the story. It is all about the sandbox, and the ability to achieve a goal with dozens of different tactical approaches. The stealth and the combat are both incredibly well-designed; the executions are smooth and brutal, especially when they are upgraded. The outpost missions are the most fun to play, as they give several opportunities to try out different methods of killing pirates and privateers. The open world is huge and inviting, the jungle is stylish, hunting is a fun side activity, and the radio towers are intriguing and ominously creaky. It is on par with the sandbox of such games as Skyrim. The one downside to the open world is the lack of NPC interaction. The few towns in the game feel full of life, but the player is unable to join in on the activity at all. The only interaction at all is through stores and missions. But overall, Far Cry is an open world game of epic proportions, very well made.

Graphically, the PS3 version is lacking. The framerate, especially during cutscenes is atrocious, only running at maximum 24 frames per second. Often frames are dropped. The textures are also problematic, often not resolving until the player moves on top of them. Draw distance is short at best. Character models could use more variety, as well; every time an outpost is liberated, the same four allies show up. These four models can be seen at every combat situation the player comes upon. But the jungle is beautiful and the art direction is very good.

One “intangible” that I must address: Although much of Far Cry 3 occurs during the day, it feels very dark. Gloomy, depressing, a bit uninviting. There is a lot of color, but for some reason it feels oppressive. I think this may come from the fact that in a game like Skyrim, for instance, even during the night it can feel inviting because of the level of activity and inter-NPC interaction occurring. In Far Cry 3, there is very, very little talk among NPCs. Silence abounds when walking through the supposedly bustling home base. Even when NPCs are fighting, the only sounds that can be heard are gunfire and loud, incomprehensible shouts.

But overall, Far Cry 3 is the culmination of decades’ worth of open-world innovation. The sandbox is enticing to the player who wishes to experiment, and every path is just as well designed as any other. The story is defined by Vaas, who is one of the all-time great video game characters. While underwhelming, it gives just enough interesting twists and revelations that it is worth following through. While the graphical performance is subpar, it is artistically beautiful. Even with the complete lack of NPC interaction, Far Cry 3 is an absolute must-have for any open-world connoisseur, and should be seriously considered by fans of any shooter. Just remember when playing, however, the words of Vaas: “Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over, and expecting a different result.”

Blog Post: Far Cry 3:Best Thing Since Sliced Bread

Far Cry 3 is a perfect example of a great game. It has all the necessary elements required a great story with an equally interesting protagonist, and a large expansive area to explore filled with side quests and mysteries galore. The main protagonist Vaas which is featured on the cover really brings life to the story. His behavior towards you and your friends is enough to brew hate. The entire story is pulled along by this hate. However, a fair warning to heed is to not be dragged into the main story. If you continue without any exploration you could easily find yourself at a major climatic moment without any island exploration. I would suggest taking it slow and conquering command posts as you go.

Another great aspect of the game is its weapons. Each weapon has the potential to have 2-3 attachments that fit to each play style. I for instances have a silenced extended mag sniper, a silenced smg, a silenced assault rifle, along with the bow. All suited for sneak however this is just one option.

FC3 while featuring a vast open world and being branded an RPG with the terrible slogan "like Skyrim with guns' you may be disappointed by its lack of immersiveness. It is not that it has none but it is small in comparison to Skyrim. You won't find much customization outside of the weapons. No storage other than your loot rucksack. However crafting does play a large role in FC3. Each item from ammo pouches to larger rucksacks can be vastly improved upon from the starting items. Each upgrade requires a specific number of animal skins leading up to a rare animal skin for the last. This adds a whole new set of non required objectives.

As mentioned above animal skins are required for crafting which is why the wildlife plays such an important part in the game while also presenting an entirely new challenge apart from pirates. While navigating the terrain you could run into a tiger controlled area and quickly be dispatched by a tiger or two. The larger wildlife such as bears and tigers are extremely dangerous and should be treated with caution. I'd take a group of pirates over a tiger any day.

Along with all these tasks you will undoubtedly level up. While FC3 doesn't offer much in the way of individual skills it allows for useful perks to be chosen after completion of each level. These perks are essential to the progression of the game (unless you like a challenge). There are 3 skill categories to chose from each with their own tree. A sneak , warrior, and long range. From where I am now it looks possible to gain every perk so don't feel like you must choose one type.

All these things add up to a great gameplay experience. Each encounter allows for a different approach each time. A prime example of this varying gameplay is during outpost takeovers. each outpost contains different enemy types which allows for a multitude of options. One example I have is the experience I had with an outpost. I had scouted out the area with my camera, making note of the 2 heavies and the one sniper. Inside the outpost they had a caged tiger. With one well placed shot of the bow i released the tiger. However to my dismay the tiger barely made it out of its cage due to the combined fire power of the terrible trio. I was then required to take another approach. However another added aspect is the alarms in each outpost. There are usually one or two. They can be shot individually or shutdown altogether from the box. If not taken care of before entry reinforcements will be called and create a nuisance. This choose your own way also carries over to story but I will let you discover that yourself.

The last addition to FC3 is the return of the level editor from FC2 with some vast improvements. The most notable being the addition of A.I. You can add enemies, friendlies, and wildlife to your maps. While none of the A.I can be used in Team Death Match or other similar game modes it opens a world of opportunity to hunting or enemy based levels. Along with the around 3,000 items the community based maps will be something worth checking out.

In conclusion FC3 is a definite buy with a great story and expansive gameplay. If you have giftcards or money from Christmas this is a great present for yourself. So pick this up for an experience you won't forget.
