The lights are on
Dead Space is an excellent survival horror title and i commend EA for taking a shot on a new franchise. i loved the whole experience from start to finish. and the RPG-ish level of customization was such a breath of fresh air. this game essentially is like resident evil 4 in space. which personally resident evil 4 is my number one favorite game of all time. but aside from that. dead space offers a great selection of cool unique and fun weapons for you to kick ass through the ishimura.
the store system was very user friendly and allowed you to store items. which anyone who has ever played a game that contains any kind of limited inventory system would know is a major plus. it also allows completionist like myself to be able to obtain all the guns in the game without having to throw any away for sell them off to free up space.
the weapon, armor and equipment upgrade system was really a plus as well. allowing you to plot your own course though a map of stat specific upgrade options allowing you to progress across them with the use of a power node. with the weapons things like reload speed, firing rate, capacity, and damage were upgradable. where your suit had your basic oxygen tank and health upgrades. the telekinesis and stasis modules on the other hand had your basic usage quality and time length upgrades.
the controls are very solid. again i hate to keep mentioning a different game but they are pretty much identical to resident evil 4. the main difference being that you can actually move slowly with you are aiming. and that attacking with not aiming would allow a melee attack to be performed.
If you've seen any gamplay footage or screen shots its pretty obvious this game looks awesome. the environments look really polished. and the frame rate stays pretty level even during large scale boss fights. the gore looks impressive and the character models are sharp. the visual blend that transitions the game from cinematic to gameplay is very cool.
one thing i really liked about this game was the very traditional structuring of the game's over progress and story. it has your basic levels that usually end with a super over the top boss fight. a few collection quest. and a few sequences of fixed gameplay where your manning turrets to fend off a wave of asteroids. it made the game very familiar and fun. it also has a new game plus mode. that allows you to start a new game once you beat it keeping your entire inventory, all your weapon armor and equipment upgrades from the start of the game.
this game already has a pretty expansive universe with the release of the game, animated film Dead Space Downfall, the motion comic series, and the newly released Dead Space Extraction on the wii. anyone who hasn't played Dead Space yet should definitely check it out. unless your a little weak stomached or just faint of heart. in my opinion this is a must play and probably should own for any survival horror fan.
