As we noted in previous coverage, Danganronpa: Ultra Despair Girls exchanges the visual novel gameplay of its predecessors for third person shooting mechanics. Today NIS America revealed specifics regarding how guns work in its upcoming title.

After taking the role of one of two heroines - Komaru Naegi or Toko Fukawa - players must escape Towa City. To aid in this endeavor, the two main characters possess a variety of Truth Bullets with different effects. In some cases, these effects focus on damage; Burn bullets, for example, cause targets to light on fire. Not every bullet inflicts pain, a fact best demonstrated by the bizarre Dance bullet. The eight types of Truth Bullets are Break, Burn, Dance, Detect, Knockback, Link, Move, and Paralyze. For more details on their effects, check out the screens below.

Ultra Despair Girls tells the story between the events of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Danganronpa: Goodbye Despair. The story begins with Komaru Naegi, the little sister of the first game's protagonist, escaping from a mysterious apartment. When hundreds of children calling themselves Monokumas rush to the scene, Naegi learns her city has been taken over by an evil group hoping to murder all of Towa City's adults. With the help of Toko Fukawa, she attempts to navigate the city and escape once and for all.

Ultra Despair Girls releases on September 1 for Vita. For more Danganronpa, read our reviews of Trigger Happy Havoc and Goodbye Despair.
