Take A Turn To Watch Civilization: Beyond Earth In Action

by Mike Futter on Oct 01, 2014 at 03:44 AM

At first glance, Civilization: Beyond Earth might appear to be the series’ popular gameplay with an alien skin. A deeper look reveals significant changes that, while not totally abandoning Civ’s history, offer new strategies in humanity’s near future.

In the video below, you’ll get a sense for the story and the options available each time you play. Since affinities (the three major approaches to development) aren’t tied to specific leaders, you’ll have a number of combinations with which to experiment.

While we’ve spoken at length about Civilization: Beyond Earth before, this video gives the first solid look at how different the Purity, Supremacy, and Harmony paths are. If you want to tame the hostile alien lifeforms (and ride them like Muadib on a Shai-Halud), you can do that.

If you prefer to turn your troops into robots of fiery death, that’s an option. Maybe you are in love with your humanity. That’s fine, exosuits give you what you need to take on enemy forces.

Of course, combat isn’t the only way to conquer your opponents. Diplomacy and technology can lead you to a different victory condition for each of the affinities. Or, you can pursue technology and contact a long-forgotten alien race.

Whatever you decide (and we suspect strategy buffs will make all of these decisions along the way), you’ll be able to take Beyond Earth for a spin soon. The title comes to PC on October 24.
