Castlevania: a franchise I've known about since my earliest days of gaming. Though I've had my eye on a few of the titles over the years, I never got around to playing any of them. Like most veteran game series with several entries spread out over multiple consoles, I didn't know where to start. Once I saw the teaser trailer for this reboot last year, it seemed pretty clear that Mercury Steam was giving people like me a starting point, a game that didn't require knowledge of the Castlevania lore. On top of that, Kojima Productions was a consultant on this project. Being a Metal Gear fan, that was icing on the cake!

Since I'm indeed not familiar with the Castlevania franchise, I often found myself reminded of other games while playing Lords of Shadow. The great mix of gameplay included Prince of Persia's platforming, God of War's combat, Shadow of the Colossus' epic boss battles, and Diablo's magic and looting. Additionally, certain elements of the story (and the atmosphere in some chapters) reminded me of Diablo as well, while some of the early chapters' environments had a Lord of the Rings vibe.

Gabriel Belmont is one tough dude - his combat cross is brutal! There are plenty of combos and extra weapons to unlock throughout the game, making the combat very satisfying.

The environments were fascinating; the music was exhilarating; the narrative was mesmerising; the characters were captivating; the scrolls were satisfying to read; the book-style menu was interesting; the combat was invigorating; and the epilogue was the most astounding scene I've ever experienced in a video game!

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is an excellent game! I'd highly recommend it.
