Infinity Ward's New Mode Blitz Is A Blast

Call of Duty: Ghosts features a new mode called Blitz, and this fresh take on multiplayer makes clever use of portals.

At Gamescom, we got a chance to check out Call of Duty: Ghosts new multiplayer mode, Blitz. In Blitz, players are divided into groups and tasked to defend a portal stationed at their base. Each team’s goal is to rush their opponent’s base and dive through that portal. Teams score points for each player who walks, slides, or falls into the hoop, and after touching the hoop, players are teleported back to their own base where they can begin their journey again.

“The way we design is always iterative,” executive producer Mark Rubin told us. “We come up with a new idea, ‘Okay let’s do a mode where players have to run through a portal to score points,’ but then that brought out a lot of questions about how that works, and you have to explore the solutions. So Blitz started out as a kind of fast-paced, maybe more accessible, version of capture the flag, and it turned into something that requires its own unique strategy. It’s almost like playing basketball where each team has its own ball at the same time.”

The mode is simple but fun, and is very fast paced. Similar to capture the flag, teams will have to be good at both penetrating their opponents base and defending their own, but unlike capture the flag, you have less time to defend your base, because as soon as players touch the portal they disappear. After a score, portals power down for a number of seconds, so you’ll have to plan your strategy around that, but it’s still a viable option to bum rush a portal and hope to overwhelm your opponents in order to get at least one player through the gate.

  • I'm surprised GI hasn't posted an article about Call of Duty: Ghosts having dedicated servers on the Xbox One. It was announced during Microsoft's conference, and that tends to be a major thing that people complain about with the game.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of Call of Duty's competitive multiplayer. I put around 30 hours into Survival Mode on MW3, and am looking for a similar mode for this game.
  • This seems like a pretty nice game for multiplayer that fits the solo player, get as many points as possible, mindset of many CoD players. Teamwork is rare in that game, so this mode will definitely fit right in.
  • sounds pretty cool

  • So let me get this straight. I could be blowing up buildings, Driving Tanks, and actually capturing strategic points to win a battle in battlefield 4. OR i could be jumping through portals in COD. I think ill take COD. XD
  • *Mandatory Call of Duty sucks comment*

Edit: Damn. Guy above beat me to it lol.
  • That sounds awesome...being a badass and sliding into the portal shall be how I do it every time!

  • I have to admit, I really like how this mode plays and should be pretty fun. The dedicated servers are the only reason I'm getting this game along with everything else. If they didn't do that I wasn't going to buy it because their netcode has sucked for so many games that I wasn't going to bother with it anymore. I'm getting BF4 as well, I like both games for the different ways that they play.
  • Call Of Duty: Grifball. This game is looking pretty good so far.
  • I wish I could get into any multiplayer game in general. I'm just not to much of a competitive person. Seems like I'm missing out...
  • no thank u
  • Am I the only one here that doesn't care about both COD and BF?
  • My friends and I actually played a game like this on Black Ops 2 a few weeks ago. It was really fun, and it's easy to play it on Nuketown 2025.

  • Sounds like a cool game mode. Still not buying it over BF4, but cool. I'll wait for the COD after this and go from there.

  • I think this game actually looks good.  I hope the changes freshen the game up enough to make this worth the purchase after 2 months.  I love playing CoD with my good friends and I am looking forward to this years game.  I never cared for the Treyarch games so this is one I can look forward to.

  • I feel like this mode is just gonna boil down to 95% of players camping their portal.
  • wow this must be next gen, after how many "new" titles they actually came up with a idea.......hell froze over

  • Interesting.

  • still am passing on this, but at least it brings something new to cod, il be to invested in bf4 to even try this, i hate cod multiplayer but i have liked their single player stories
  • i think we all know whether we like, or don't like this game by now. i don't think a new mode is going to change the people who hate the game or the people who love the game. i've moved on.
  • I like the idea of this mode. It seems like it'll be a nice change of pace
