Quantic Dream's Latest Is Not Like Heavy Rain

If you jumped right from Heavy Rain to Beyond: Two Souls, you might be surprised by Quantic Dream's changes in tone and gameplay. The two games are very different, but don't take our word for it.

Quantic Dream co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumiere explains the differences between the two projects to Sony in this video interview.

Don't miss our latest hands-on impressions with the game.

  • Yeah the games are way different.

  • This game looks so awesome, I may have to buy a PS3 just for it and Kingdom Hearts 1.5
  • I am still not sure if I am going to get this game. I liked Heavy Rain despite it's many problems, but there are so many great looking games coming out this year, I might wait a few months.
  • I don't see the big deal with Ellen Page just my opinion.
  • I dunno....the demo felt very similar. It's not a bad thing because I love Heavy Rain, but the QTEs and vigorous shaking of the controller while trying to escape from a fight are mechanics that are exactly the same. The whole "no it's different because you control an entity" is true to an extent but the core of the game is still very heavily QTE based.
  • Can't wait for this game, it's definitely my most anticipated game for the remainder of the year.

  • Already have it preordered, this will be the last hurrah on my PS3 as far as purchasing any other AAA titles, then it's on to the PS4.

  • Have it pre-ordered. I loved Heavy Rain and Omikron Nomad Soul. I played the demo and absolutely loved it. Tuesday cannot come fast enough.

  • Can't wait!

  • Differences are a failure of the game designer
  • Copied from an earlier post: "My hype and excitement I held for many months has been dead for awhile now ( for the better) and it's just now starting to rebirth. Quite excited and interested to see where the story goes and what changes they put in. But i will say this, if the game's controls ( especially movement) are not vastly improved since Heavy Rain and Indigo Prophecy for that matter, then I won't be able to forgive and enjoy the game. I could overlook them before, not anymore. It's been 8 years, no excuses." Going to try out the demo and see if they've at least addressed one of the fundamentals of gaming: control. The story and setting still look fantastic and I love Page & Dafoe, I can't fathom either of them half-arseing it :]. I must say that I hope David Cage pushes past his limits and comfort zone in regards to the gaming side of his projects. Indio Prophecy and Heavy Rain remain all time favorites and classics, but both of them slip the ball (not dropping it) towards the end when things are suppose to wrap-up. Ultimately the curtain gets pulled a little higher than intended and we see the facade of choice not impact as greatly as we initially feel they will. I'd like to see greater impacts and unique outcomes as a whole game experience, not the small moments that are forgotten as the game progresses. Heavy Rain tread that line with the Origami challenges, but certain key elements were still to be there regardless. I know it's a lot to expect and wish, but David Cage sees himself as a unique designer and pioneer of sorts, i'd like to see him take new risks and flip more tables of what's expected of video games normally.
  • I just finished the demo a few minutes ago. I wish I had the money to buy it, because I'm definitely sold.

  • Just played the demo. Don't think it's the game for me.

  • On the fence about this game. The narrative seems compelling, but the gameplay, or lack thereof, just seems boring. Also, I can't stand David Cage...
  • Buying this day 1

  • I want to play this game, even if the gameplay doesn't look all that appealing to me.

  • Oh Beyond:Two Souls... You had me at Dafoe.

  • I really wanted to purchase this game, but the demo makes my PS3 overheat.

  • Looks good, but I don't like these type of games where you have to shake the controller up and down, left and right, just so annoying.

  • From the demo, I can tell they are very different.
