New Trailer Heralds The Golden Age Of Piracy

The latest entry in the Assassin's Creed franchise takes place near the turn of the 18th century, during the so-called golden age of piracy. A new Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag trailer effectively sets the tone.

It's a heavily stylized affair, designed to quickly pull viewers into Black Flag's world. As such, it's a little light on gameplay specifics and in-game footage. We've dug deep into those in our earlier preview, which is a must-read for anyone interested in learning where the series is going.

The trailer also mentions a few notable names from the golden age of piracy, including Blackbeard, Calico Jack, Charles Vane, and Benjamin Hornigold. You may be more familiar with some of those men than others, but don't worry. We spoke with historian and piracy expert Colin Woodward about the foursome a while back, and you can read details on them (and much more) in our extensive interview.

Look for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag on October 29.

  • Looks golden so far. Well, it's gonna be full of gold I assume- after all, it's a pirate's life for...
  • I hate how AC isn't about Assassinating as much as Mass Murder.

  • I really hope they have a decent amount of options or yer mighty sea vessels.  I'm not going to be disappointed if they don't, the normal ship in AC3 looked pretty badass.  Also, bring back tree running!

  • I am now officially excited for this game!

  • I don't like it , i think everything changed from ACIII , its just doesn't appeal to me anymore ! (But i will buy anyways)
  • A big part of me simply wishes that Ubisoft had just dumped the Assassin's Creed name and themes from this and just made one big, awesome pirate game At this point, the whole Assassin/Templar story-line's getting stale, so why not just have pirate mischief? Nevertheless, looks pretty cool so far. Looking forward to seeing how it handles this fall.
  • Wow, this looks bad!
  • New interesting history about Pirates already Pre-order but I sure wanna know how this story gonna connect what is left off on Ac3 besides Edward being Haytham's dad and Connor's grandfather. Surprise me Ubisoft and make it good.

  • Looks great!

  • I really want this one to succeed. The series needs a strong title after AC3.

  • Yup, after seeing that trailer I'm still really excited about this.

  • It may be too soon to tell, but it makes me worry about the outcome of a game when the focus is more on the background stuff (pirates, if you didn't catch it) rather than the story and game play.

  • Pre-ordered and cant wait!!!

  • Next up, Assassins Creed Tumbleweed. The series goes cowboys and indians.

  • yep!

  • i love it

  • Looks awesome!  Can't wait!

  • I would be happier if they used the old game engine... but of course its going to be more like AC3 gameplay..and glitches..
  • And assassin's creed 5 will surely feature Sam Fisher because by that time the series will be fully in the modern era...
  • What is that on his back?
